Felicia Knaul, MA, PhD (Economics, Harvard University), is Associate Professor at Harvard <br />
Medical School and Director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative where she serves as the Co-director<br />
of the Secretariat for the Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and <br />
Control in Developing Countries, an initiative she helped found in 2009 and for which she is lead <br />
author and Editor of Closing the Cancer Divide available as a report (English, Spanish and <br />
Russian) and a book distributed by Harvard University Press in 2012. She is also Senior <br />
Economist at the Mexican Health Foundation where she has led a research group focused on <br />
health and the economy since 2000. <br />
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, Dr. Knaul founded Cáncer de Mama: <br />
Tómatelo a Pecho a Mexican civil society organization that promotes research, advocacy, <br />
awareness, and early detection initiatives for breast cancer in Latin America. She has published <br />
articles on the topic of breast cancer in low and middle income countries in academic journals, <br />
lectures extensively on the topic both from the point of view of a patient-‐advocate and a health <br />
systems researcher, and has been featured in magazines including Science. Her book recounting <br />
her personal experience with breast cancer and as founder of a civil society organization in <br />
Mexico, was released as Tómatelo a Pecho in 2009 (2nd edition, 2011), and expanded and <br />
published in English in 2012 through Harvard University Press titled Beauty without the Breast. <br />
Dr. Knaul has more than 130 academic and policy publications including journal articles <br />
in English and Spanish, book chapters and books. In 2012, she led the publication in The Lancet <br />
of a major review of the Mexican health system reform, following on chairing a Lancet working <br />
group and resulted in a series of publications 2006. She also led the production of reports for <br />
the Mexican government and participated in the World Health Report 2000. Her research is <br />
focused on cancer in developing countries, health system reform, health financing and poverty, <br />
women and health and children in especially difficult circumstances. <br />
She holds a visiting academic appointment at the National Institute of Public Health of <br />
Mexico and is a board member of numerous organizations including: the Union for International <br />
Cancer Control; the International Advisory Board on Cancer, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical <br />
Center; the Electronic Living Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Cancer Survivorship Research at <br />
Princess Margaret Hospital; the Harvard-‐Mexico Foundation; the Jalisco Cancer Institute; and <br />
the Sheikh M. Hussein Al-‐Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer in Saudi Arabia. She has <br />
held senior government posts at the Ministries of Education and Social Development of Mexico <br />
and at the Department of Planning of Colombia, and worked for multilateral agencies including <br />
WHO, the World Bank, the Inter-‐American Development Bank, and UNICEF. <br />
Dr. Knaul is a citizen of Canada and the United Kingdom, and a permanent resident of <br />
Mexico, dividing her time between Boston and Cuernavaca. She and her husband, Dr. Julio <br />
Frenk, have two children, Hannah and Mariana Havivah. <br />
