This Catalan designer from Manresa studiedFashion Design at the University of Southampton(United Kingdom) and went on to specialise in“Knitwear Design and Techniques” in Igualada.MIRIAM PONSA is a signature clothing collectionguided by the designer’s own instinct rather thanfollowing latest trends. Her sources of inspirationare closely connected with textures and she usesmany different techniques, some manual andothers inherited from ancient crafts. This passionled her to research materials such as latex, whichshe normally works with in all her collectionsand allows her to merge with the fabric, giving ittexture and capturing the subtlety of the moment.MIRIAM PONSA evokes an industrial spirit thatpervades the old space she has refurbished tohouse her studio. She comes from a family with alongstanding textile tradition dating back to theearly 19th century and that has been passed downfrom generation to generation up to the presentday. The craft process defines the hand-workedpart of the collection and requires techniquesrarely used these days, such as hand embroidery, tapestry, basketwork and manual dyeing, allapplied to items of clothing. She is even more interested in the actual processthese garments undergo than in the end result, asit is during the process that new creative pathsare opened. The MIRIAM PONSA collection was awardedthe “Barcelona és Moda” prize by the BarcelonaChamber of Commerce in 2007 for the mostpromising new company. She also won the 080Barcelona Fashion prize in 2010 for the bestAutumn-Winter 2010-2011 collection, awardedby the Government of Catalonia’s Department ofTrade and Tourism.43
