How many types of PrivateProtected Areas (PPAs)should there be?When considering the creation of PPAs, one of the key points thatneed to be considered is if the legislation will allow for the creation of just oneor various types of PPA. Experience in other countries has demonstrated thatnormally only one type of PPA has been established. It is important to notethat this issue is currently being reviewed and, at this time, the preferredapproach is to establish various types of PPA. What is currently beingproposed is to have one type of category that leans toward absoluteconservation in perpetuity, while at the same time there are othermanagement categories combining conservation and sustainable productionactivities on the property, for a shorter amount of time. Incentives would varyfor each category, depending on the type of conservation and the timecommitted, with the intention of promoting categories with the mostconservation activities for the greatest amount of time.8
