The other important aspectof Section 86(1)e is about providing grid connectivity torenewable <strong>energy</strong> power plants.The policies formulated to promote renewable <strong>energy</strong>development also include the National Electricity Policy andTariff Policy. The National Electricity Policy, formulated bythe Ministry of Power, in pursuance of the provisions of theElectricity Act, 2003, provides direction on determinationof percentage for renewable power procurement. Thepolicy also provides a roadmap for gradually increasingthe share of renewable power generation thereby requiringthe various state commissions to provide increasingpercentages for procurement of power from renewable<strong>energy</strong> sources. The Tariff Policy on the other hand givesguidance on the most critical issue of tariff for powerpurchase from renewable <strong>energy</strong> sources. It recommends‘preferential tariff’ for purchase of power from renewable<strong>energy</strong> sources as well as lays out a long-term strategy forpricing of power from RE sources. The tariff orders issuedby different state electricity regulatory commissions have3-5 years of control period. At the end of the control periodthe tariff is revised based on the new cost and performanceparameters.As per Section 86(1)e of the Electricity Act, 2003,different state electricity regulatory commissions have fixeda percentage of electricity which should be purchased fromrenewable <strong>energy</strong> sources.
