La tradición y la vanguardia son dos fuerzas
que forman un mismo torrente en el caudal
de la obra de Rufino Tamayo. El oaxaqueño
recibió una herencia ancestral que tuvo el
arrojo de ampliar y propiciar un diálogo con las vanguardias
europeas más audaces, con lo que su trabajo
artístico alcanzó –a través de formas y colores únicos–
reconocimiento como uno de los artistas que
más aportes hizo al arte mexicano.
Sin ser su meta, Tamayo se constituyó como un
líder artístico en América Latina; un creador sofisticado
y exquisito en los Estados Unidos, y en la revelación
de las fuerzas telúricas, vivas y singulares de lo
indígena antiguo, en Europa.
En 1948 realizó una exhibición en el Palacio de
Bellas Artes. Con este hecho recibió reconocimiento
oficial en México y se aceptó la trascendencia e importancia
de su contribución al arte internacional y
al nacional. Dicha exhibición culminó, en aquel momento,
con el encargo oficial de dos murales para el
Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Aclamado internacionalmente, Tamayo mantuvo
un apego vital hacía su patria. Residió en Nueva York
por quince años, en París por diez más y luego en la
Ciudad de México. Pero el pintor no dejó de propiciar
ocasiones para que su trabajo fuese conocido en
todo el territorio nacional.
Tradition and the avant-garde are two forces that
make up parallel streams in Rufino Tamayo’s rich
body of work. This artist from Oaxaca was on the
receiving end of an ancient cultural inheritance
and had the grit to expand and converse about his
work with the boldest, cutting-edge European artists.
With unique shapes and colors, he achieved
recognition as one of the most influential contributors
to Mexican art.
Tamayo established himself as an artistic leader
in Latin America—without this being his goal—
and in the United States he became recognized
as a refined and sophisticated artist. In Europe
he emerged as a channel for artistic portrayals of
earthly forces – a living, unique representation of
ancient Indigenous culture.
In 1948 Tamayo put on an exhibition at the
Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. With this
showing he received official recognition in Mexico
and accepted the significance of his contribution
to national and international art. This exhibition
culminated in the official commission of two murals
for the Palace of Fine Arts.
With international acclaim, Tamayo maintained
a vital attachment to his country. He lived in
New York for fifteen years, in Paris for more than
ten years, and later settled in Mexico City. Tamayo
