El Changüí
The Changui
The Changui is one of the oldest forms of
the musical complex of the Cuban Son and
originated from the rural areas of the
eastern regions of Cuba. It is performed
by the Son quintet integrating the tres,
marimbula, bongo, maracas, guiro or
machete or guayo. In the Changui the
bongo doesn’t establish a fixed or steady
pattern like in the Son. Rather a free
and improvised figuration is used.
Originalmente no llevaba tumbas.
Note: the tumba part which later became
popular in Havana, is an additional contribution
to the rhythm of the Changui.
Originally the Changui was performed
without tumbas.
