Transportation information

Taxi

All of the taxi fee will be charged by the meters that you actually use.

However, there are just some reliable taxi companies that we recommend you to use

such as: Mailinh, Vinasun.

Not all the taxi drivers will speak (fluently) English, so it’s wise to write the name and

address of your destination in Vietnamese, and to show it to your taxi driver.

Vinasun (08) 38 27 27 27

Mailinh (08) 38 38 38 38

Note that GRAB TAXI and UBER are also available in Ho Chi Minh City

(you will need to download the application from your app store).

IMPORTANT TIPS:

- Please pay attention to your belongings before leaving the taxi

- Note the taxi number and the company names carefully (it’s useful if you forget

something in the car)

- Please pay attention that there are many fake taxi companies

21

Moto

taxi

(in Vietnamese, called “xe ôm”)

Probably the best way to become a Saigonese! In general, motorbike drivers in

city center can speak some English and most of them are quite friendly.

Absolutely agree on a price before you set off, short hops around town shouldn’t

be more than VND50,000 ~ $2.5 USD. And if you want to travel by this way,

make sure that you have a helmet by your own or provided by the driver.

We don’t recommend to rent a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City, if you have zero

or limited motorbike driving experience. And should you want to rent one, be

aware that driving practices in HCMC are a bit unusual with limited respects for

red lights, stops, no signal when turning, etc… so we do encourage you to drive

carefully and slowly (maximum speed limit in the city: 40).

Note that GRAB BIKE and UBER BIKE are also available in Ho Chi Minh City (you will need to

download the application from your app store).

IMPORTANT TIPS:

- If you don’t want to take a taxi neither motorbike (“xe ôm”), then you can rent one for your own

around the backpacker area (Pham Ngu Lao Street) in District 1 at VND 150,000 ~ $7 USD for 24

hours. You are required to leave your passport as guarantee.

- Drivers with limited experience should consider renting an automatic bike (usually a bit more

expensive)

- Always keep your motorbike in sight or parked with an attendance.

22

Bus

One of the cheapest way to go around in the city:the rate for one bus ticket will be

between VND5,000 - VND6,000/route/guest!

You can download "TripGo" app to easy find your itinerary, when

the bus is arriving, which stop(s) it will make.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

- Pay careful attention to your wallet as if it is so crowded on the bus to avoid the pick pockets.

- Don’t forget to check your belongings before getting off.

- Always keep the bus ticket as it’s given to you for further purpose such as unexpected

inspection from the bus company.

23

Cyclo

That is only available in Vietnam! A ride on a cyclo definitely gives you a unique

taste of the city, enjoying all the sights and sounds! Note that cyclo is more a

touristic transportation and as such not allowed in several streets.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

- At around VND 150,000/hour ~$6 USD, be sure to bargain hard with the cyclo rider beforehand.

- Make sure you are clear on the price and destination upon departing to avoid the tricks that

cyclo rider might do to benefit his wallet.

- Always hold your valuable things closest to your body such as smart phone or camera, when

walking in open places, to avoid bag snatching.
