EDITOR’S NOTE

This month celebrates the first year

anniversary of sesebelen.com' s

publication. How fast it was from

the time I posted “Quarantine Shoot”

as the very first blog post and now

having multiple creative outlets—

its just so surreal. As part of its celebration a

new addition to SSBLN Creative Outlets is now

officially unveiled—SSBLN Philippines. A

quarterly released online magazine published

through Yumpu.com.

Last June I’ve released a test run of the

magazine—Endless: Summer Issue—together with

the launch of a new section for fashion at

sesebelen.com— Style Agenda. This had inspired

me to push forward in making a full blown

magazine which consists of Fashion, Travel, and

Photography—that some will still be seen as a

blog post and some are going to be exclusive for

the magazine.

As August is the month of its release, I

decided to curate content that are timely for the

monsoon season in the Philippines. Inspirations

from K-Dramas that you could incorporate with

your OOTD on a rainy day and Instagram

content creators that would help you build a

superb moodboard to inspire you in revitalizing

your wardrobe. The travel section introduces

a new volume of “Wanderer.” We’ll travel down

south and visit the pristine waters of Anilao,

Batangas. This issue also challenges the

stereotype of fashion with photographs of pearl

necklaces, which shows that it is an accessory for

everyone.

Finally the cover story. As this is the first

issue I decided to have my story on how I

started sesebelen.com. Accentuating looks inspired

from 90’s street style and an homage to

the first layout I did for sesebelen.com. In this

cover story I share my narrative and thoughts on

how I overcome challenges and continually

discovering other creative aspects that I could

apply to my creative outlets.

This magazine is a fruit of my love for

print and digital magazines as well with my

passion for magazine layouting. L’Officiel,

Vogue, MEGA, & Preview are just some that

inspired the layout of SSBLN Philippines’ initial

release. As this marks the beginning of a New

Age for SSBLN Creative Outlets, expect more to

come your way. I hope you enjoy this first issue

as much as I enjoyed making it.

Hoodie

A staple on rainy days—the hoodie. Your go-to outfit when that

cold breeze hits your face and mess up your hair. Amp up your

style by copping this look from Park Bo Gum’s drama, “Record

of Youth.” A plain or printed hoodie paired with a stylish coat

and trouser would surely boost your OOTD game.

Cardigan

A cardigan can be formal, casual, or even a lounge wear—it

just depends on what you wear underneath it. Inspired by Lee

Min Ho’s character in his drama “The King: Eternal

Monarch”—that occasionally wears a Cardigan, and as Dark

Academia style is becoming a trend, a cardigan could be perfect

on a chill Sunday brunch-out with your friends or family. With

its knitted texture this could also be your partner on a cozy day

at home doing zoom calls or just sit beside the window while

sipping a cup of coffee or binge watch all of Lee Min Ho’s

dramas on Netflix while eating a hot bowl of ramen.

Anorak

Ever heard what’s the brother of a windbreaker is called? Well,

it’s an Anorak. Same design as a windbreaker just remove the

full body zipper and side pockets then replace it with a midlength

zipper and have a big pocket in the middle. Nam Joo

Hyuk’s character—if you’ve watch “Weightlifting Fairy Kim

Bok Joo”—is an athlete, a swimmer to be exact; seen to be

wearing an anorak in a scene after his training. With its

lightweight design this jacket could now be your go-to daily

jacket or when you’ll be working out and have a jog and it’s

kinda breezy outside.

Denim

Another rainy day staple—a Denim Jacket, though you can

wear this every season because it's a good piece when layering

and styling a simple look. By just wearing a simple white shirt

or a button-down shirt, it’ll surely be a stylish partner. And

when Lee Jong Suk’s character on W: Two Worlds, showed this

denim on denim outfit partnered with a pair of chelsea boots,

it sure did looked stylish.

Bomber

Park Seo Joon’s character in Itaewon Class occasionally wears

a lot of layered clothing due to the cold weather in South

Korea. But in the Philippines you can’t actually do that because

our weather is just fairly cold during the monsoon season. Having

a bomber jacket you can still cop some of Park Seo-joon’s looks.

Bomber jacket is a type of jacket worn when the weather is kinda

chilly but doesn’t need a heavy weighting jacket. Perfect for the

Manila rainy day weather. Having a stylish bomber is a plus, you

might be going to Sae-ro-yi’s pub, so you need to stand out with

your look.

WANDERER VOL.2

H A NGOVER

The quick change from dry to monsoon season in the

Philippines makes you think if you'll cancel that beach trip

on a rainy July. Just two-hours away from Manila is

our destination for Wanderer Volume Two. A four days

and three nights experience from Vivere Azure to

Aiyanar Beach and Dive Resort in Anilao, Batangas

July is not your typical month to book a beach

getaway, as the monsoon season starts at June

in the Philippines till mid-October. That's why

it is hard to predict the weather sometimes.

Today could be a sunny day, the next it’ll be raining

cats and dogs all day. But as how fast as seasons change

in the Philippines, there could be no bad timing to take

a drive out of the city and go to the laid back atmosphere

of the beaches in nearby provinces.

Anilao, Batangas is known for its majestic and

rich marine biodiversity, this makes Anilao the best

diving sites in the world. Aside from diving, hotels and

resorts in the area are also something to look forward

to. The luxurious and serene surroundings of Vivere

Azure will give you that relaxation you are longing for

and Aiyanar Beach and Dive Resort will offer you an

adventure at sea.

This year, traveling surely became even more

expensive than in the pre-pandemic times. As you need

to do swab testings and buy personal protective equipments—face

masks & face shields—to lessen the spread

of the virus. That’s why we maximized our short

getaway outside Manila. This trip is also for us to

celebrate my mother’s 50th birthday, so what better

way to celebrate your fifty-years of existence, well, at

a place where the celebrant always loves being at, the

beach!

Even though the weather won’t cooperate

with our beach trip, there’s no way it will stop us from

enjoying the fresh breeze from the sea and wonderful

amenities of the hotels we’re staying at could offer.

We first stayed at Vivere Azure. Short story

about this, when my mom decided to have her birthday

trip in Anilao, one thing popped up in my mind, that

vlog of Anne Clutz at this hotel—Vivere Azure. So, I

immediately suggested to have a stay there. Vivere is in

a pricey stand point compared to its neighboring

hotels and resorts in the area. But, the price is all

worth paying when you experience their amenities—

from the relaxing ambiance of the whole resort, the

scenic view from the pool, and the delicious food. We

stayed at Vivere for just one night, then, we moved to

Aiyanar, which is just a six-minute drive away.

equally beautiful to when you are looking at it from

the outside. Having a cascading architecture its just

so satisfying to look at.

Though half of our stay we're mostly in

our room due to the storm that was reported at that

time in the area. I still enjoyed our quick getaway.

It gave me a time to have a break from the isolation

and stress in the city and had a chance to be with

mother nature and be at the beach again.

In Aiyanar you could experience scuba diving and

see the beauty underwater and savior the majestic

marine life Anilao could offer. They have a 3-day

training to acquire a certification for diving but they

also have a one day experience, training and actual

diving, but, just at the area infront of the resort. Even

though, you’ll see beautiful marine life right away.

They also have a large infinity pool where it is divided

with a training area for those who will be diving. The

dining area was also an instagramable spot, especially

when it is lit at night. The view from the rooms are as

A year has gone by since the publishing of

sesebelen.com and shared the bits of my

life to the online world. When I posted my

very first blog we are all in a tough situation.

Hoping that this notion could ease the

stress we are all experiencing because of

the unpredictable situations in

the midst of a pandemic.

FORMATION

The birth of this whole sesebelen.com content

was a five year process actually. I had countless

of websites created that was just left hanging

and set aside due to hectic schedules. I started

weblog way back in 2016—for me, it was the

height of blogging, specifically microblogging

through Instagram and Tumblr.

David Guison, Kerwin King, and

Laureen Uy—to name a few who I look up to

and that inspired me to start my own blog. A

galvanizing feeling on how these “bloggers” or

“content creators” produce their content about

traveling to different places, lifestyle, and

fashion through photography and writing. I was

then inspired and started to try it and produce

content myself.

Fast forward to 2020, the age where

vlogging and curating Tiktok videos are the

trend in online content creation. It was hard to

think if people are still in to blogs and how I

could build a following and engage an audience

through this platform. I looked and read articles,

if it’s still “ok” to blog in 2020, and the

answer I got was a staggering YES. Blogging is

you—telling your own story through a written

work that could coincide with photos you’ll

post online. Written storytelling will never go

out of style—hit it Taylor Swift. The extensive

imagination and creative mind of a writer are

the greatest ammunition in telling stories and

narratives in engaging the readers; next to

photographs and beautiful layout designs.

FINDING A PURPOSE

My mom once asked me, on what’s my purpose

in doing all these—blogging, having photoshoots,

& sleepless nights in order to write,

edit, and layout the things I need to post. At

first I was flustered—didn’t know how or what

to answer her unexpected question. I tried to

ponder upon this and think about a purpose for

all these.

In the about page of my website I’ve

told there that, sesebelen.com was created in

order for me to impart what was beyond in my

social media accounts. This website will be an

avenue to share about stories and tips in traveling,

my fashion influences, and even with my

love for photography and layout design, in a

creative way—given that I do all the layouts

and stuff. The website also helps me to hone

57

my creative skills and have that opportunity to

impart something that I’ve learned from the

internet or a book, things that I’m fascinated

about, and what I love to do that fires up my

passion for creativity and content creation.

STUMBLING BLOCK

As a Libra who is very indecisive of his

actions, I sometimes have a hard time in pushing

through with a certain post—because at

first the idea is ok with me but then I’ll ask

friends on what they think and realize that “oh

you’re right, hindi maganda.” and change or revise

it immediately. Also, taking into consideration

the practicality of producing materials for a

blog post and layout designs are minor setbacks

that I also experience. But the one that I know

would cause anxiety after posting a content,

that is a different kind of setback.

The fact that my platform is online and

we all know how horrifying people are online,

specially on social media platforms—given that

we have the freedom to post whatever we want.

The idea of having unexpected criticisms or encountering

someone that doesn’t have the same

understanding of what I am conveying in a certain

post, worries me. “Was there something

wrong with my content?”, “Was my post

offensive?”, “Was my design off and was

the concept too much?” or “Should I just

take down the post?”; somethings like that

straight-up comes into my mind after seeing my

content publicly displayed online and could be

seen by a ton of people, I know or don’ know.

We are unconfined of expressing and

sharing anything online from opinions to our

passion. But, we live in an age where online

validation is powerful. People are very observant

and meticulous with what they see in their

newsfeed. There’s now this feeling of angst

before and after hitting that publish, post, or

share button. That there are instances where I

have to edit multiple times a certain blog post.

I’ll ask opinions on what my friends think about

with this certain piece, photo edit, or layout

before it gets posted online. Its like a research

paper that if I submitted it to the professor—

the people online—and it doesn’t sit well or did

great with them, I feel like, I kind of failed on

that research paper. There’s now this search

for validation on everything I do—that it sometimes

lead to being a setback.

I guess overcoming this boils down to

having a mindset that you need to start somewhere,

and understand that as human beings,

we commit mistakes, have mishaps along the

way, and that we are all learning from one

another to improve ourselves as we interact

online. The thought of holding yourself back

in starting doing what you love because you see

yourself not as astounding as others, will not

take you anywhere. You need to start, in order

for you to become astounding in doing what

you love. The norm and online validation will

not hinder the idea of you sharing your creativity

through an online or any kind of platform.

DISCOVERING

As I was also battling my inner demons due to

the isolation, I explored and scoured the internet

on how I could be productive during these

trying times and on how I can squeeze creative

juices with the given immense amount of time.

Being immersed into photography, in an

age where in everyone could be a photographer

by just using their mobile phones, such as me.

You need to have a unique content that would

stand out. Due to the pandemic we can’t easily

do the things we can pre-pandemic style. So

you sometimes need to be resourceful in producing

content. Like most of the shoots I’ve

done in 2020. I relied on youtube tutorials and

tips on how I could easily learn how to edit my

photos. I also utilized apps like pinterest and

instagram to gain inspiration for content that

I could do at home. You’ll then apply that to

your idea and have an elevated version that has

an element of “you”. I started to have photoshoots

in my bedroom to test the things I’m

learning—relying on sunlight and my phone,

" A new age

has come

to sesebelen

creative outlets

and there ’ s a lot

to offer in the

years ahead.

"

I then apply the things that I learned about

editing on photoshop. I started to get a hang

of it and soon after, a ton of photoshoots has

gone by and photos are piling in my laptop, that

deserves to see the light of day in the online

world. Enter my first blog post “Quarantine

Shoot”. Where in I blogged about what I’ve

learned and been up to during the lockdown.

In “Wanderer the Series”, one thing I

learned while doing this was on how to have a

nice schedule for your blog posts, plan it before

hand, and do all the things needed to be posted

a month ahead.

The blog series went for a whole month.

Every weekend of September I need to produce

content—a written piece, photos, do all the

layout, and other things for the blog post. My

mistake was I down played everything. Thinking

that my procrastination would do me good.

It takes time to come up and execute

concepts and ideas that you’ll put out. Even

magazines prepare and curate their content

months before releasing an issue. Think about a

content that is plausible with your time, have a

week or a month to do all the things you need—

thinking on what should be the next concept

for your content, photoshoots, & layout. There

should be an adequate amount of time for curating

the next content and a convenient date when

you’ll post it.

As a creative it is kind of difficult to

carry out certain ideas in mind, due to the fact

that when an idea struck, sometimes in production

it doesn’t go as planned, so you need to

have a back-up. I never knew that the research

skills I acquired as a PolSci student would help

me in in curating a blog post. With the newly

added, Style Agenda—it really made me look

up on climates, Philippines’ geographical landscape,

and other related stuff to justify that I

could release a summer lookbook in June and

that my readers will not be bewildered on to why

I am releasing such content.

NEW AGE

The gravity that this "new normal" has brought

different tremendous challenges. In this day

where in we are mostly isolated in our homes—

getting enough inspiration to work on was a bit

of a challenge.

While I was listening to this podcast—

"Kwentong Creatives with Gio Puyat" where

in Macoy Dubs was a guest. Macoy told there

that “Madami tayong pwedeng gawan ng

kwento.”—and it resonated to me that there

could be inspiration everywhere. That the sky

is the limit and you could write about even the

things you just see in the midst of your home.

Having your friends and family could

also give you those boost and inspiration for

your next content. A good support system surely

helps—as they say "no man is an island."

Producing creative content online had

made me expand and create multiple creative

outlets—sesebelen.com, ssbln studios, and

the newly added SSBLN Philippines; my outlet

for magazine layouting.

A new age has come to sesebelen

creative outlets and there’s a lot to offer in the

years ahead.
