CONCERN OVER THE CRIMINAL CASE<br />

AGAINST OLEG ORLOV<br />

CHAIRWOMAN OF EUROPEAN Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights expressed on<br />

13th of September, at the meeting of the committee, great concern over the ongoing<br />

case against Russian human rights defender Mr Oleg Orlov, winner of the 2009 European<br />

Parliament Sakharov-prize for freedom of thought. The first hearing concerning<br />

criminal charges, case No. 310555, of libel against Mr Orlov was held today at District<br />

Court No. 63 in Khamovniki district in Moscow...<br />

THE EU SHOULD NOT REVISE ITS POLICY ON CUBA<br />

WELCOMING THE FOUR Cuban ex-prisoners, Human Rights Subcommittee Chair Heidi<br />

Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI), said that “they had gone through a very difficult time. Conditions<br />

of imprisonment were very harsh: bad hygiene and sanitary conditions, excessive<br />

heat and humidity, poor alimentation, solitary confinement.<br />

We acknowledge and admire your strength and endurance, your faith and integrity<br />

to endure these very hard circumstances”. Ms Hautala also underlined that “releasing<br />

some of the prisoners and then sending them straight into exile is only partially a positive<br />

step. Another 115 political prisoners are still behind bars in Cuba.”...<br />

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SUBCOMMITTEE<br />

ON HUMAN RIGHTS AUTUMN HEARINGS<br />

SUBCOMMITTEE ON Human Rights will hold on Monday 13th of September its first meeting<br />

of the autumn term. The Committee will discuss the upcoming review of the UN<br />

Human Rights Council, human rights situation in Colombia, the release of political<br />

prisoners from Cuba, the controversial amendment to penal code of Tunisia and prison<br />

conditions in Kazakhstan.<br />

This autumn the Subcommittee will discuss human rights in the Western Balkans,<br />

death penalty, situation in prisons in Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine, elimination<br />

of violence against women...<br />
