What should the reader know going into A Darker Shade of Magic?
This is, in many ways, a love letter. To Harry Potter, and its sense of
wonder and escapism. To Avatar: The Last Airbender, and its take on
elemental magic, but also on friendships, and adversaries. It’s a love
letter to fantasy, and to escapism, and to the darker shades of
magic in the most literal sense. This is a book about power, and the
way it changes us, bringing out our greatest strengths, and
amplifying our greatest weaknesses.
What cause is the one that you would get on the barricades for?
Definitely queer, visibility, equality, and representation. I came out
relatively late, and that was in large part because I rarely saw gay
women in the mainstream growing up, and when I did, they took
only one or two forms. Now I try very hard to be open, public, and
transparent, even when it makes me feel vulnerable, because I
know how important it is for people to see themselves, so they can
know themselves.
What kind of things do you daydream about?
I daydream about monsters. About doorways carved into the cracks
in hillsides. About the closeness of magic, and the idea that there’s
so much more to the world than meets the eye.
