Never before has the art de la table, in the French manner,
had such a resounding international success. Thanks to
Haviland, Limoges porcelain enjoys a prestigious reputation
all over the world. From the court of Empress Eugénie to the
royal Moroccan court, from Germany to Japan, Haviland
has served some of the leading members of royalty, as well as
heads of State.
The supreme example of a French firm, Haviland nevertheless
has its roots in the United States. In 1842, David Haviland
discovered by chance a plate of an extraordinary quality
and beauty. Fascinated by his find, the American decided to
produce this delicate porcelain, and his research led him to
France, and more precisely, Limoges.
Impressed by the French savoir-faire, he opened a porcelain
factory with the assistance of his two sons Charles Edward
and Theodore. His idea was to produce what he called “the
white gold of Limoges” and to create outstanding pieces.
Haviland soon became the ultimate reference.
Thanks to his success, Haviland was able to collaborate with
some of the most famous artists, including Vasily Kandinsky,
Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dali, who contributed their
creativity and originality to the porcelain he produced.
More recently, Alain Thomas, a French painter, centred
