This was followed by a period of apparent calm and for
a short time conditions of platform stability obtained. But
there was a new phase towards the end of the Cretaceous
marked by the pattern of fractures and subsident basins with
ophiolite extrusions. At the end of this period an impor-
tant phase of tangential movement occurred, during which
the central Iran overthrust along the “main thrust line” and
the intense folding of the Zagros trough (Zagros écailles
zone) took place. To the north of the overthrust the out-
lines of the central Iran and Elbourz chains were already dis-
tinguishable.

Successive phases occurred at the end of the Eocene,
during the Neogene and the Quaternary, but the Alpine oro-
geny gradually declined; stability conditions did not yet
obtain, however.
A new and typically Alpine domain opens up towards
the east with the eastern Iran and Makran chains; its evolu-
tion is similar to that of the Indus chains of Pakistan and it
thus links up with the Himalayan orogenic zone.
