A painter renowned for depicting female portraits, still lives with flowers, and marines. He became the most gifted
pupil of Jean Portaels at the Academy of Brussels and debuted early in his career at the Salon des Artistes Français.
Fernand Toussaint has also been member of the circle Le Sillon and took part in several exhibitions organised by La
Libre Esthétique. In Paris, he met the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens who encouraged him to develop the art of the
portrait of which he became so famous in this genre, especially thanks to his sensitivity to feminine poetry and the
psychological dimension he achieved. The artist illustrated the typical 19 th- century salon-painting. His entire work
reflects the influence of French Impressionism, the admiration for the tradition of English portraiture, the Belgian
romantic tradition even as his own developed and so produced typical attractive works of art.
Peintre et aquarelliste des portraits féminines, fleurs, intérieurs, paysages et marines. Elève à l’Académie de
Bruxelles de Jean Portaels (1889-94). Il se perfectionne à Paris, où il reçoit les conseils d’Alfred Stevens Il demeura
toujours sous son influence. Artiste aux goûts aristocratiques et raffinés, il brilla également comme peintre de fleurs
et de paysages. En 1929, la grande revue parisienne L’Illustration consacra un numéro spécial au Salon de Paris.
Celui-ci avait décerné une médaille d’or à Fernand Toussaint pour un portrait de femme. Il fut également attiré par
Londres. Membre du groupe Le Sillon. Participe à des expositions de La Libre Esthétique.
Schilder en aquarellist van hoofdzakelijk het vrouwelijke portret en stillevens van bloemen, maar ook interieurs,
landschappen en marines. Hij start zijn opleiding aan de Academie van Brussel onder leiding van Jean Portaels
(1889-94). Hij vervolmaakt zich in Parijs en krijgt er raadgevingen van Alfred Stevens, die faam genoot door het
portretteren van de vrouwelijke schoonheid, die voor altijd een invloed op hem zal blijven hebben. In 1929 wijdt
het bekende Franse kunstmagazine L’Illustration een speciale editie over Le Salon de Paris wordt vermeld voor zijn
verdiende gouden medaille. Hij werd ook Lid van de kunstgroep Le Sillon. Neemt ook deel aan tentoonstellingen
van La Libre Esthétique.
