Romantic painter of urban sights and architectural buildings. He became a pupil of Berrins and Herreyns at the
Academy of Antwerp. He resided in many countries (The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Morocco) and
nourished in these travels his romantic inspiration. His generally small-sized paintings have a glossy brushed aspect
and the many sights he painted are remarkable by their precision, their exact perspective and the brilliancy of
their lights. Author of a treatise on perspective (1834) that became rapidly famous, he was appointed teacher at
the Brussels Academy (1832-1874). Together with Jean-Baptiste Van Moer and F. Strobants, he belonged to the
generation of Romantic “vedute” painters. He participated at many exhibitions and also accomplished diplomatic
missions, for example in Spain (1841).
