Warm welcome for
Nirint Shipping Line
The MPA gave a warm welcome to Nirint
Shipping Line when its vessel, the Sloman
Commander, entered the Port of Montreal
on October 25, 2006. Its 13-member crew,
led by Captain Vladimir Tokarev, assisted
by Second Offi cer Juri Hrustaljov, sailed
the ship from the Caribbean to Montreal
in just nine days. Port offi cials came
on-board to greet the crew and presented
a special souvenir to the ship’s captain to
mark its arrival.
Elias Hage, director of Echo Freight,
the Nirint agent in Canada who managed
the vessel’s entry into Bickerdike
Terminal, said that “Nirint docks in the
Montreal port once every six weeks.”
In 2006, it tied up in Montreal in June,
August, October and December. He
added that “the service is temporarily
suspended during the winter season,
from the end of December until early
April since the vessel is not ice-class.”
des Caraïbes jusqu’à Montréal en neuf
jours seulement.
Elias Hage, directeur d’Echo Freight,
On Friday, April 20 th , the Honourable
Lawrence Canon, Minister of
Transport, Infrastructure and
Communities and Minister
responsible for the Canada Lands
Company (CLC), and the Honourable
Michael Fortier, Minister of Public
Works and Government Services,
announced a new government
initiative mandating the CLC to
redevelop 448,242 m 2 of government
properties in Montreal’s harbourfront.
Certain sites targeted by the
initiative have been managed by
the MPA for several decades, but
they have never been used for port
business. They represent a total
of 247,000 m 2 .
l’APM. De plus, le corridor ferroviaire
et la sous-station électrique sur
le site de l’élévateur à grains
demeureront sous la responsabilité
de l’APM.
Par cette initiative nommée
« Nouveau Havre de Montréal / Montreal
New Harbourfront », qui protège les
activités portuaires, maritimes et
ferroviaires du port de Montréal, le
gouvernement canadien démontre
non seulement son engagement
envers Montréal, mais reconnaît
l’importance du port de Montréal à
titre de pilier économique tout comme
le rôle qu’a joué l’APM dans
le développement, l’entretien et la
saine gestion de ces terrains.
No sites will be ceded to the CLC
before the end of their leases with the
MPA. In addition, the rail corridor and
the electric sub-station on the site
of the grain elevator will remain the
responsibility of the MPA.
This new government initiative,
“Montreal New Harbourfront / Nouveau
Havre de Montréal” will protect port,
maritime and rail activities, and it
demonstrates not only the Canadian
government’s engagement toward
Montreal as an economic pillar,
but also the important leadership
role that the MPA has played in the
development, maintenance and
sound management of these lands.
Une division de
Morgan Stanley
devient actionnaire
majoritaire
dans Terminaux
Montréal Gateway
Le 22 février dernier, la fi rme
new-yorkaise Morgan Stanley
annonçait que le groupe spécialisé
en investissements dans les infrastructures
de sa division Investment
Management avait signé une entente
avec l’allemande TUI afi n d’acquérir
80 pour cent de l’équité dans
l’entreprise Terminaux Montréal
Gateway, qui exploite les terminaux
à conteneurs Section 77 (Cast) et
Section 62 (Racine). Hapag-Lloyd
conservera, pour sa part, les 20 pour
cent restants. À la suite de cette
transaction, l’exploitant a pris le
nom de Société Terminaux Montréal
Gateway.
A division of
Morgan Stanley
Montreal Gateway
Terminals (MGT)
On February 22, 2007, the infrastructure
and investment arm of
New York-based Morgan Stanley
announced that it had agreed to
acquire an 80 percent equity stake in
MGT, which operates two container
terminals at the Port of Montreal,
namely Terminal Section 62 (Racine)
and Section 77 (Cast). Hapag-Lloyd
will retain a 20 percent interest in
MGT. Following this transaction,
the terminal was renamed Montreal
Gateway Terminals Partnership.
La Société Terminaux
Montréal Gateway –
renforce la sûreté
L a compagnie d’arrimage Société
sûreté », a dit M. Wayne Smith, directeur
installations. Une caméra infrarouge
de reconnaissance en 3D prend une
photo numérique détaillée de la main, et
l’information ainsi recueillie est ensuite
conservée dans la base de données à
accès sécurisé de la compagnie.
Chaque jour, quelque 1 200 camionneurs,
venant de partout en Amérique du
Nord, doivent se soumettre aux mesures
de contrôle de sûreté pour cueillir ou
livrer des conteneurs aux terminaux
P O R T I N F O

enhances security
ontreal Gateway Terminals
Partnership (MGTP) recently
launched a new security device
to further enhance security protocols
aimed at confi rming people’s identity and
the delivery of cargo at the terminals.
The newly installed Hand-Key II system
will be used to verify the identity of
truckers moving containers in and out of
MGTP’s Section 62 (Racine) and Section
77 (Cast) terminals.
“We are mindful of the ever-increasing
risks since 9/11 and have purchased the
best state-of-the-art technology on the
market to reinforce security measures,”
said Wayne Smith, General Manager
of Environmental Health and Safety at
MGTP. He added that MGTP terminals
are among the most secure container
handling facilities in North America.
MGTP has over 50 close circuit television
(CCTV) cameras covering both terminals
in addition to those belonging to the
MPA.
MGTP is one of the fi rst companies
in the marine shipping and handling
industry to install this technology
on site. A three dimensional infrared
camera takes a digital snapshot,
capturing numerous points of the
displayed hand; the information is
then stored in the company’s secure
database.
Every day, approximately 1,200 truck
drivers from across North America pass
through security at MGTP to pick up or
drop off containers. In peak periods,
this number can go up to 1,500.
“Until now, drivers only had to show
the usual paperwork to gain access
to the terminals. Now that their hand
geometry is in the secure database it
is then matched with a personalized
identifi cation number (PIN). Photo
identifi cation and other relevant
information makes the security check
seamless,” said Kevin Doherty, Chief
Executive Offi cer of MGTP.
This cutting-edge biometrics
technology was developed by U.S.-based
Ingersoll Rand Security Systems under
the brand name Schlage. The Hand-
Key II unit uses proven hand geometry
recognition data. No fi nger prints are
taken. Although this technology has
been available for some time, it has been
greatly improved over the years. MGTP
has adapted aspects of the technology
to suit its needs, representing an
investment of about $150,000 overall, a
small price to pay to ensure goods are
delivered to all its customers.
“This system is much better than
magnetic cards or keypunching devices
where cards can be handed over to
someone else or fail to provide accurate
identifi cation of the driver,” said Carl
Laramée, Manager of Information
Systems, MGTP, and the leading
proponent in launching this new system.
He was supported by a seven-member
project committee, which has been
active in developing this new system
since August 2005.
All about
cruise ships
calling Montreal
Hapag-Lloyd’s passenger liner, Christopher
Columbus, was the last ship of the 2006
cruise season to sail into the Port of
Montreal on October 23.
The 450-passenger ship was among
a large number of cruise vessels to sail
to Montreal. Ports of origin were from
various places like Holland, Quebec’s
Iles-de-la-Madeleine, and cities along
the Atlantic coast such as New York and
Boston. From May 13 to October 23, 2006,
the Port of Montreal logged the arrival
of over 40 domestic and international
cruises. Some were docked for a brief
one-day stop, others for longer periods,
making this one of the busiest cruise
seasons in the port’s calendar.
“The Montreal Tourism Board knows
what tourists want to see, where they
want to go, and we have the port facilities
to accommodate them,” said Dominic J.
Taddeo, President and CEO of the MPA.
“We will continue to work together to
promote Montreal as the international
destination of choice,” he added.
P O R T I N F O
1 200 passagers. Holland America Line,
le Groupe CTMA et la Clipper Cruise
Line comptent parmi les compagnies de
croisières dont les navires fréquentent le
plus souvent le port. Leurs navires ont
une capacité allant de 95 à 1 380 passagers.
While the cruise ship market remains a
specialty activity for the Port of Montreal,
cruise ship traffi c grew signifi cantly in
2006 to 40,565 passengers, a 13% increase
since 2005.
Cruises help raise Montreal’s
international profi le and position the
city as an exciting, culturally-diverse
destination. According to estimates,
cruise ship passengers spend about
$5 million in Montreal each season
on hotels, restaurants, and of course,
shopping.
The cruise lines that anchored in
the Port of Montreal last season included
the Maasdam, which can carry over
1,200 passengers; it is a regular client.
Holland America, CTMA Group and
Clipper Cruise were the most frequent
cruise lines to tie up in the port, with
capacity varying from 95 to 1,380
passengers.

Nouveau jalon atteint
2005. En 2006, l’importance accrue des
entrées des divers produits de l’acier
dans ce secteur a permis de compenser
notamment la baisse enregistrée dans
les produits de cuivre.
Un secteur en forte demande
Le secteur des vracs liquides, le
deuxième secteur en importance au port
de Montréal, a connu une croissance
de 4,3 % en 2006 pour s’établir à plus
P O R T I N F O
l’asphalte liquide, a terminé l’année
en baisse à près de 870 000 tonnes,
soit 30,6 % de moins qu’en 2005. Une
diminution du volume de bitume et
d’hydrocarbure explique le recul dans
cette catégorie.
Une progression remarquée
En 2006, le trafi c des vracs solides
a enregistré une hausse de 5 % pour
atteindre près de 5,6 millions de tonnes.
Le trafi c des céréales enregistre une
hausse remarquable de 28,8 % par
rapport à l’année précédente pour
atteindre 1,4 million de tonnes, son plus
haut niveau depuis 2001.
Les autres vracs solides ont toutefois
totalisé près de 1,4 million de tonnes,
une baisse de 1 % par rapport à 2005.
Un secteur en développement
En 2006, le secteur des croisières a connu
une croissance importante. Le port de
Montréal a accueilli 40 565 passagers, en
hausse de 13 % comparativement à l’année
surpassera 2006. Cette croissance
sera propulsée par le trafi c conteneurisé
et les produits pétroliers.
Investissements d’immobilisations
Afi n de répondre à la croissance
et aux besoins des clients, l’APM
prévoit ainsi en 2007 des projets en
immobilisations qui totaliseront près
de 43 millions de dollars, et de ce
montant, un peu plus de 20 millions
de dollars seront consacrés aux
terminaux à conteneurs.
Plus de 8,6 millions de dollars
seront affectés à des réfections de
mur de couron nement au terminal
Bickerdike et à la protection contre
l’affouillement.
L’APM consacrera également
quelque 6 millions de dollars à la
sûreté, ainsi que 8 millions de dollars
au chapitre de l’environnement.
Sur l’horizon 2007-2011 du
plan d’affaires, l’APM poursuivra
d’importants investissements,
d’environ 3,8 %. Le secteur des
marchandises diverses a totalisé
quelque 2,8 millions de tonnes, en
hausse de 1,2 %. Les marchandises
conteneurisées ont augmenté de
3,3 %, avec un total de plus de
2,7 millions de tonnes au premier
trimestre.
Le nombre de EVP est passé de
294 500 au premier trimestre 2006
à 311 432 au cours de la même
période en 2007, augmentant ainsi
de 5,7 %. Quant au secteur des vracs
liquides, il a dépassé 1,6 million
de tonnes, en hausse en 8,7 % en
comparaison de la même période
l’an passé. Enfi n, les vracs solides
ont atteint plus d’un million de
tonnes, affi chant une hausse de
3,6 %.
Autre fait saillant en 2007
En matière de sûreté, en 2007, l’APM
a tout récemment pris livraison d’un
poste de commandement mobile à
la fi ne pointe – le seul de ce genre au
Canada.
New milestone
achieved in 2006,
as Port of Montreal
surpasses 25 million
tonne mark
PHOTO : APM / MPA ARCHIVES
In many respects, 2006 was a turning
point for the MPA and the Port of
Montreal. For the fi rst time in its history,
the port handled more than 25 million
tonnes of cargo, setting a new record
and solidifying Montreal’s strategic
position as an inland port and a hub
for the shipping industry in eastern
Canada’s business corridor.
The excellent performance in 2006
was directly tied to traffi c increase in
three of the port’s sectors of activity:
general cargo, liquid and dry bulk, and
strong growth in container categories
and in grain and petroleum products.
The results refl ect the level of trade
the port engages with more than
80 countries, and the effi ciency and
competitiveness of its infrastructure.
Much of the unprecedented growth in
2006 was a direct result of the increase
in containerized general cargo, which
grew 1.8% since 2005 to 11.3 million
tonnes, bringing total containerized
cargo handled since the arrival of the
fi rst container in Montreal, in 1967, to
more than 200 million tonnes.
A solid balance sheet
Net income—for the 27 th consecutive
year—of $10.5 million.
Total revenue rose to $82.6 million
(includes operating and fi nancial
revenues), an increase of $3.7 million
or 4.8% compared with 2005.
Expenses were $69.5 million
compared with $64.7 million in 2005,
an increase of 7.4%, mainly due
to salary increases and the MPA’s
investment programs amortization
charges.
Earnings before the settlement of
a lawsuit and gross revenue charges
(the stipend returned to the federal
government, based on total revenues)
totalled $13.1 million.
In addition, the port handled more
than one million container TEUs for a
fi fth consecutive year. In fact, in 2006,
total containerized cargo transported
was 1,288,910 containerized TEUs, a
2.7% increase since 2005.
Non-containerized general cargo
totalled 470,000 tonnes last year,
decreasing 5.1% since 2005. In 2006, the
growing importance of various steel
imports in this sector helped mitigate
the decrease in copper imports.
A sector in strong demand
The liquid bulk sector—the MPA’s second
most important sector of activity—grew
by 4.3% to 7.7 million tonnes in 2006.
The increase in the volume of petroleum
products, particularly gas, diesel oil,
heavy oil and naphta, which grew by
11.4% from 2005 to approximately
6.9 million tonnes, contributed to the
strong performance of this sector
in 2006. Volume in other liquid bulk
traffi c—namely liquid asphalt—closed
the year at 870,000 tonnes, a weakening
of 30.6% from the previous year. Weaker
asphalt and hydrocarbon volumes
contributed directly to lower traffi c in
this category.
Notable progress
Traffi c in dry bulk grew by 5% in 2006 to
5.6 million tonnes. Grain traffi c grew an
impressive 28.8% over 2005 to approximately
1.4 million tonnes, its highest
level since 2001. However, volume in
other dry bulk softened by 1% compared
with 2005 to almost 1.4 million tonnes.
A sector growing in importance
In 2006, cruise ship traffi c grew signifi -
cantly. The Port of Montreal welcomed
40,565 passengers growing approximately
13% since 2005. International
cruise ships contributed to much of this
increase.
2007: On track
for another year of
record growth
Total traffi c is expected to surpass
the record set in 2006, as it will
continue to be driven by increased
container and petroleum product
traffi c.
Capital investments
To meet its clients’ increasing needs
and to continue to offer quality and
effi cient port infrastructures and
facilities, the MPA will continue to
invest almost $43 million towards
the expansion and improvement
of its facilities. Of this amount,
slightly more than $20 million will
be dedicated to the upkeep of the
container terminals, while more
than $8.6 million will be dedicated
to the repair of perimeter walls and
cope wall scouring protection at the
Bickerdike terminal.
Safety measures will receive
$6 million and investments in the
environment another $8 million.
The 2007-2011 corporate plan
forecasts investments of over
$175 million in the enlargement and
improvement of installations with the
lion’s share dedicated to investments
in the container terminals, as traffi c
volumes are expected to surpass
the 13 million tonne mark during
that period.
First quarter results for 2007
Total shipping traffi c reached
5.5 million tonnes, almost 201,000
tonnes more than the same
period for 2006. This represents
an increase of 3.8%. The general
cargo sector traffi c totalled 2.8
million tonnes, an increase of 1.2%.
Containerized cargo rose by 3.3%,
totalling more than 2.7 million tonnes
during this quarter.
The number of TEUs surpassed
294,500, the total for the same
quarter for 2006, to 311,432, an
increase of 5.7%. And for the liquid
bulk sector, traffi c surpassed 1.6
million tonnes, an increase of 8.7%
from the same quarter last year.
Finally, dry bulk traffi c totalled more
than one million tonnes, rising 3.6%.
Additional highlights in 2007
On the security front, the MPA took
possession of a mobile command
post in 2007—the fi rst of its kind in
Canada.
à pommeau d’or a été remise par le
président-directeur général de l’APM,
M. Dominic J. Taddeo, au capitaine
Oswald Pascal Saldanha, commandant
du n.m. Glory de la
compagnie allemande
Hapag-Lloyd. La
remise de cette
récompense n’a pas
seulement marqué le
début de la nouvelle
année au port de
Montréal, elle a été
aussi l’occasion de
célébrer plusieurs
« premières ».
Tout d’abord, ce fut
une première Canne
à pommeau d’or pour
le capitaine Saldanha.
Mieux encore, le
voyage à Montréal était
sa première affectation
aux commandes
d’un navire à titre de
capitaine. En effet, le
21 décembre dernier,
le jour même où
son navire quittait
Lisbonne, au Portugal,
il avait été promu
du rang de premier
offi cier à celui de
capitaine. Le capitaine
Saldanha est aussi le
premier commandant
à pommeau d’or vient rappeler à la
A day of fi rsts
at this year’s
Gold-Headed
Cane
The 168 th Gold-Headed Cane was awarded
by Dominic J. Taddeo, President and CEO
of the MPA, to Captain Oswald Pascal
Saldanha, commander of the ms Glory
of the German company Hapag-Lloyd.
The presentation of this award not only
marked the beginning of the Port of
Montreal’s new navigation year, but it
was an opportunity to celebrate several
“fi rsts”.
This was the fi rst Gold-Headed Cane
for Captain Saldanha. Better yet, the
voyage from Lisbon to Montreal was his
fi rst assignment as captain of a ship. Last
December 21, the same day his ship left
Portugal, he had been promoted from
First Offi cer to Captain. Captain Saldanha
is also the fi rst Indian commander to win
this prestigious trophy.
Hapag-Lloyd of Hamburg, the company
that owns the Glory, had its own “fi rst”.
It was the fi rst time that one of its ships
received such an honor.
“Every year, the presentation of the
Gold-Headed Cane reminds the seafaring
community from the four corners of the
world that the Port of Montreal is open
regardless of the season,” Mr. Taddeo
explained.
A container ship 177 metres long,
fl ying the Bermuda fl ag, the Glory arrived
in Montreal with a load of 670 containers
(TEU). It berthed on January 1, 2007,
at 4:20 a.m. at the Racine Terminal,
operated by Montreal Gateway Terminals
Partnership.
The Port of Montreal had its own “fi rst”
to brag about. “In 2006, the port recorded
its strongest performance to date—
25.1 million tonnes,” Mr. Taddeo did not
miss the opportunity to point out. “This
is a new record, eclipsing the 24.9 million
tonnes recorded in 1980.”
Finally, Mr. Taddeo also honoured
pilots René Gaudreault and Jacques
Vigneault of Corporation des pilotes du
Saint-Laurent Central, who guided the
Glory safely into port.
M. Mustapic
travaille le marbre Avorio que l’on trouve
sur l’île de Brac, en Croatie, de là le lien
entre le capitaine et l’artiste. On dit aussi
que cette pierre ressemble à celle qui
orne les murs extérieurs
de la Maison Blanche, à
Washington.
Le pommeau de
canne, sculpté à la main,
a été remis à M. Taddeo
au cours d’une petite
réception qui s’est tenue
en décembre dernier.
M. Taddeo a été
ravi et ému
de recevoir
un tel
cadeau.
A unique
Cane’s Head
Dominic J. Taddeo, President and CEO
of the MPA, usually presents the ship’s
captain with a gift, symbolic of the port’s
welcome to the fi rst ship that enters the
Port of Montreal in the new year.
This time, Mr. Taddeo was the one
receiving a gift—a unique marble cane’s
head from Captain Tonci Krzanic of
Croatia, recipient of the 2006 Gold-Headed
Cane in January 2006.
Captain Krzanic wanted to fi nd a way
to show his appreciation for the warm
welcome and hospitality he received when
he was awarded the prestigious cane.
He turned to a young artist named
Marko Mustapic. Mr. Mustapic works
with Avorio marble, found on the Croatian
island of Brac, hence the connection
between the captain and the artist. It is
also said that this stone is similar to the
marble adorning the exterior walls of the
White House in Washington.
The marble hand-carved cane’s head
was presented to Mr. Taddeo at an intimate
reception last December. Mr. Taddeo
was delighted to receive such a
heart-warming gift.
Raymond Lemay:
A great Montrealer
and port promoter
Raymond Lemay, C.M., applied the same
principles in the shipping world that guided
him in the world of sports. Through
his hard work, dedication and uncommon
skills applied while head of the
Board of the MPA and as the fi rst francophone
president of Canadian Steamship
leading container ports on the North
Atlantic market.
Blessed with energy and magnetism,
Mr. Lemay was recently inducted into the
Quebec Sports Hall of Fame. “Raymond
Lemay is a friend whom I have always
admired and always will admire. I have
never known anyone like him in my life,”
said Mr. Dominic J. Taddeo, President
and CEO, MPA, at the induction.
“Because sports was one of his strong
points, he applied the same principles as
in the shipping industry. The principle
of good management, the principle of
a ajouté M. Taddeo.
Membre à vie de l’Association olympique
canadienne, il a aussi été président
dans notre propre histoire. »
physiques », a dit M. Henrico.
exclusive d’Oceanex Income Fund,
Easter Seals House:
building
what matters
Earlier this year, the MPA donated
$75,000 over three years to the Easter
Seals House capital campaign, which
seeks to build a home for children with
disabilities. Launched in 2006, the
campaign is chaired by Peter Henrico,
President and CEO of Oceanex, an
important Canadian carrier for the Port
of Montreal.
“Oceanex has been a business partner
of the MPA for many years and we are
delighted to have its support in helping
us reach our goal of $2 million to build
a facility for children with physical
disabilities,” said Mr. Henrico. “Dominic
J. Taddeo, President and CEO of the MPA,
has always set the standard for port
activity and community relations. As our
fi rst foundation stone partner, the MPA
once again demonstrated its leadership
role with this generous donation,” he
added.
“This generous gift from the MPA is
a wonderful contribution to the campaign,”
enthused Marvin Chaulk, member
of the board of directors for Easter Seals
Newfoundland and Labrador and of the
Easter Seals House campaign committee.
“The fact that this gift comes from
outside the province is evidence of the
campaign’s broad appeal and Oceanex’s
leadership role,” he added.
Oceanex, a wholly-owned subsidiary
