Perigueux :
the town and its history
Discovering Perigueux is like looking
through a history book. Climb aboard
the time machine and let’s discover the
history of our town.. By visiting the Art
and Archaeology Museum in Perigueux you
will journey back to mankind’s origins by
means of the numerous prehistoric exhibits.
The town’s heritage will take you back to
the magnificence of the Roman Empire
with its many architectural remains and
its Gallo-Roman Museum (Vesunna) which
will allow you to appreciate the riches of
the antique city of Vesunna.
Vesunna, the town, was also a goddess
surprising for her proud and majestic
temple.
Our journey into history has only just
begun. Strolling down a medieval side
street, walking from square to square
you will encounter half-timbered houses
and the sumptuous residences of rich
Perigueux merchants, endowed with lofty
towers.
In this extensive historic district it is the
cathedral which sits prominently on its hill
(puy). The building, of which the inhabitants
are justly proud, is in the form of a
Greek cross surmounted by domes Byzantine
in their inspiration. The originality of
the building comes from the various restorations
from the 19th century onwards.
Built on the St James of Compostella
Pilgrim Wag (a UNESCO World Heritage
site since 1998) the cathedral remains
to this day an important stage in the pilgrims’journey.
As you stroll through the
centuries you will also discover the delicately
decorated and sculpted Renaissance
private residences.
But the history book of Perigueux is not
yet closed ! In the 19th and 20th centuries
the extensive town planning development
left a ground plan of long straight streets,
wide boulevards with perfectly aligned
façades, bay windows, balconies, tall buildings
of rented accommodation…in fact
we have an atmosphere of Haussman’s
Champs Elysees in Paris, an atmosphere of
the 19th century and the “Belle Epoque”.
Keeping active in Périgueux
Around Périgueux there are more than
200 kilometres of way-marked, easily
accessible rambling and walking tracks,
allowing you to stroll at will through the
woods, by the river or relax in a picnic
area.

After your stroll why not canoe
downstream and get away from it all to
appreciate the heritage and culture offered
by the town of Perigueux. Fancy a few
rounds of golf The Saltgourde Municipal
Golf Course, just five minutes from the
centre of town, will welcome you to its
calm atmosphere. Well-equipped with its
ample driving range, its putting greens,
there is also a bar and restaurant, all of
which guarantee many enjoyable moments
and a breath of fresh air !

su Historia.
Visita el Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie
du Périgord que presenta un montón
de testimonios prehistóricos. Vuelve al
empezar del especie humana.
Pasea por la antigua ciudad de Vesunna,
ahora nombrada barrio Vesone
que permite acordarse de la epoca romana
con varios vestigios y su museositio
Galloromano (Vesunna). Fue la
diosa Vesone quien dió el nombre a la
ciudad romana. Admira su estupendo
Fanum (templo celtico romano).
Asi comienza tu viaje. Périgueux no es
solamente una ciudad romana. Périgueux
es también una ciudad medieval
y renacentista. Al dar una vuelta en las
callejuelas medievales y en las plazas,
se dara cuenta del patrimonio arquitectural
: casas con entramados de
madera, palacetes con torres, testimonio
de la riqueza de los comerciantes y
artesanos de la ciúdad.
Descubre, en este gran casco histórico
ubicado sobre una colina, la catedral
Saint-Front. Este maravilloso edificio,
tiene una arquitectura en cruz griega
coronada de cúpulas, inspiración bizantina.
Situada en el camino francès
(declarado de interès por el patrimonio
mundial de la Humanidad desde 1998),
la catedral Saint-Front es una etapa
imprescindible para los peregrinos
Pasea por el tiempo y descubre los
palacetes renacentistos esculpidos y
adornados.
La historia de Perigueux no queda con
esta epoca. Las grandes obras de urbanisación
del siglo XIX (se parecen a
las de Haussman en Paris) marcan la
ciudad con estas calles, estos bulevares,
estas avenidas rectos bordeados
de fachadas de casas con balcones, y
grandes ventanas.
Périgueux Hoy en dia
Al centro del departamento (dordoña
Perigord), Périgueux cuenta unos 30
000 habitantes, dos cascos históricos,
un centro ciudad comercial apreciado
y animado, un barrio estudiante (2000
estudiantes). Perigueux, capital de
esta provincia es una ciudad torneada
al futuro, muy dinámica, turística,
florecida con un medioambiente preservado.

An Hand von bedeutenden Ruinen ehemaliger
Prachtbauten und dem gallorömischen
Museum (Vesunna), ermessen Sie
den Reichtum der antiken Stadt Vesunna.
Vesunna, (sowohl Name der Metropole wie
auch der Schutzgöttin), überrascht uns mit
ihrem stolzen, majestätischen Tempel.
Dies alles ist nur der Beginn Ihrer Zeitreise.
Während Sie durch mittelalterliche
Gassen schlendern, begegnen Ihnen einfache
Fachwerkhäuser wie auch Patrizier
Wohnsitze mit angebautem Geschlechterturm,
das sichtbare Zeichen des Reichtums
der gehobenen Bürgerschicht. Die Altstadt
wird überragt von der Kathedrale auf der
Kuppe des Hügels. Dieses Gebäude, der
Stolz der Bewohner Périgueux’s, besteht in
seinem Hauptteil aus einer Kuppelkirche,
in der Form eines griechischen Kreuzes,
mit byzantinischem Vorbild. Verschiedenste
Restaurationen präsentieren uns
heute ein originelles Bauwerk. Für Pilger
auf dem Jakobsweg war der Besuch der
Kathedrale von Périgueux ein bedeutender
Halt (Weltkulturerbe UNESCO seit 1998).
Während Ihres Spaziergangs durch die
Jahrhunderte werden Sie auch Stadthäuser
der Renaissance Zeit mit grandiosen
geschmückten Steinfassaden sehen.
Schliessen Sie das lebensgrosse Geschichtsbuch
der Stadt noch nicht!
Die städtische Bebauung der Neuzeit ist
an der geometrischen Linienführung der
Strassen, an den breiten Ringstrassen und
der schnurgeraden Ausrichtung der Häuserzeilen
zu erkennen. Nicht zu übersehen
sind auch grossartige Mietshäuser mit weiten
Fensteröffnungen und Balkonen, die
uns mit ihrem Aussehen à la Haussmann
ins 19. Jahrhundert und die Belle Epoque
versetzen.
Périgueux heute
Périgueux, mitten im Périgord liegend und
Hauptstadt des Departement Dordogne, ist
resolut der Zukunft hingewandt. Die dynamische
Stadt von 30’000 Einwohnern hat
Einiges zu bieten: - der Stadtkern lebt von
betriebsamer Geschäftigkeit
- Hochschule für 2000 Studenten
- das historische Zentrum ist beliebter Anlaufpunkt
für Touristen und Einheimische
In diesem Lebensraum finden sich zudem
zahlreiche Grünflächen, welche der Stadt
vier Blumen auf der Liste der begrünten
Städte Frankreichs bescheren.
