The Pierre Savard AwardsPierre Savard (1936-1998), well-known historian, professor and Canadianist, has contributed greatly tothe development of Canadian Studies. He has published several books, held various functions andcollected numerous distinctions, which have all earned him an international reputation. He was amember of the Royal Society of Canada (1975), President of the Canadian Historical Association(1980-1981) and President of the ICCS (1983-1985).The Pierre Savard Awards are designed to recognize and promote each year two outstanding scholarlymonographs on a Canadian topic, written by members of ICCS associations/associate members and whichcontributes to a better understanding of Canada. The awards form part of a strategy that is aimed atpromoting works produced through the Canadian Studies international network. There are two awards :the first recognizes a book written in French or English; the second a book written in an other language.Book written in a language other than French or EnglishSubmission GuidelinesEvery member association or associate member of the ICCS can submit each year thetitle of a book that has been published within the last two years by one of itsmembers.The book must be a scholarly monograph dealing mainly with a Canadian topic andwritten in a language other than French or English, by one or more authors.The Adjudication Committee of the ICCS will act as the jury. Its judgment will bebased on assessment reports provided by external reviewers the Committee will havecontacted.Books not selected will not be kept on file for the following year. However,associations will have the right to re-submit works that have not been selected (aslong as the two-year period is not exceeded).The Pierre Savard Awards comprise a document signed by the President of the ICCSand by the President of the Adjudication Committee. The Awards include travel andlodging expenses, in order for the recipients to travel to Canada to officially receivethe Award at the Annual General Meeting of the ICCS.The Publisher will be allowed to mention the Award in any publicity relating to thewinning publication.Eligibility RequirementsOnly monographs dealing mainly with Canada written in a language other thanFrench or English are eligible. Comparative studies will be considered, as well asworks written by more than one author.Collections of poetry, novels, plays, conference proceedings, reference works, editedbooks, anthologies, bibliographies, etc. will not be eligible. The same applies toworks essentially comprised of previously published documents, such as excerptsfrom books or articles.The author must be a member in good standing of a member association or of anassociate member of the ICCS.The application must be introduced by the president of a member association orassociate member.An application must contain the following: a) two copies of the book beingsubmitted;b) a two-page abstract in French or English; c) a curriculum vitae of the author(s); d)a list of five specialists, including address, university, e-mail, etc., able to provide inFrench or English a detailed assessment of the work submitted; e) a letter from thepresident of the member association or associate member supporting the submission;and f) complete information on the publisher.The deadline for submission is October 31. Decisions will be announced by April 1 of the following yearat the latest.
