Report from the Chair
Since 2004, OAG has worked hard to
establish a strong foundation for organizational
growth through its updated
Strategic Operational Plan, and most recently
by producing a new Policies and
Procedures Manual. With the completion
of these documents, 2007 was a
year of consolidation, laying the administrative
groundwork for the ongoing
planning for a future building.
OAG’s first challenge came in early
2007 with the opportunity to retrieve
important elements from the former
home of O.J. and Isobel Firestone in
Rockcliffe before the building was demolished.
Thanks to present owner,
Neil Malhotra, a plan was approved to
contract Commonwealth Historic Resource
Management Ltd., to recover architectural
features from the house, and
the City offered to store the objects in
a former fire station. The cost of this
project was not initially included in the
2007 budget, but the chance to re-unite
elements from the original house with
works from the Firestone Collection, at
a future date in and a new home, was too
compelling to miss.
Another project that garnered considerable
public support for OAG was its
quest to relocate to the former Canada
and the World Pavilion on Sussex Drive.
Reasons for this move were prompted by
OAG’s pressing need for a new and improved
facility, and the availability of the
Pavilion, designed as an exhibition space
for the public and located on an historic

and exceptional site. OAG put forward
spirited arguments to make its case and
was considered a serious contender.
Gallery representatives have also continued
to work with the Ottawa Arts
Court Foundation, the Youth Hostel
and City staff regarding the potential
redevelopment of the Arts Court site
as a private/public partnership, and this
project is ongoing.
In February, OAG held its Partners in
Art Breakfast; over 150 guests mingled,
and the event featured welcoming words
from Mayor Larry O’Brien and a lecture
by Edward S. Goldenberg, author of The
Way it Works: Inside Ottawa. Sponsored by
RCB Financial Group, this successful
event raised $18,000; it launched OAG’s
2007 Donor Campaign with the ambitious
goal of raising $150,000 to support
exhibitions, public programs and educational
activities.
Our 2007 annual art auction Splash!
proved a great success thanks to the
overwhelming generosity of the community.
It included exceptional art by
local artists, fabulous food by Ottawa’s
best restaurants and caterers, numerous
donated gifts, and many hours of volunteers
work. All made for great party and
raised over $60,000 net for exhibitions
and public programming.
The Art of Golf is intended to attract
business people, with the aim of making
OAG more widely known and securing

long-term partnerships with private sector
partners. OAG was delighted to welcome
the Honourable John Baird and the
Honourable Jim Watson as Honourary
Patrons, and during dinner they entertained
the crowd with good-humoured
political sparring, contributing to the
success of the sold-out event which generated
a record $36,000 net.
OAG is especially grateful to those corporations,
businesses and individuals
making long term commitments over
several years: these include Bell Canada,
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, TELUS,
Footeworks; Heritage Brewing Company,
Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation,
Ottawa Citizen, Glen A. Bloom
(for acquisitions); Jean-Pierre Gaboury;
Lawson Hunter, and Nan Griffiths.
Under the City’s of Ottawa’s new Arts
Service Agreement, introduced in 2005,
three-year sustaining funding has been
awarded, providing OAG with longterm
stability for its operations. Annual
funding for programs and operations was
also received from the Canada Council
for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council,
with additional funds from the Ontario
Trillium Foundation and Canadian
Heritage for specific projects. OAG is
most grateful for this essential support.
Our Board committees are very active,
and include the following: Executive
Committee (also responsible for Finance)
chaired by Sandy Foote; Nominations,
chaired by Jean-Pierre Gaboury;
Programming and Acquisitions, chaired
by Jeff Thomas; Firestone Committee,
chaired by Lawson Hunter, Fundraising,

chaired by Sandy Foote, and the Building
Committee, chaired by Nan Griffiths.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank two members who are leaving
the Board: Jeff Thomas has generously
worked with OAG for six years and
chaired the Acquisitions Committee,
and Sunny Pal has served for the past
two years. I would also like to welcome
new Board member Rosalie Favell, an
artist with an extensive national exhibition
history who is currently completing
her PhD at Carleton.
An organization such as the Gallery
could not function successfully without
the support of its volunteers, whether
working in Art Rental and Sales, serving
on the Board or contributing as a
member of a fund raising committee.
OAG has also established a new program
for student volunteers. We are sincerely
grateful to all our volunteers and thank
you for your indispensable contribution.
I would like to express our deep appreciation
to our Director Mela Constantinidi
and the Gallery’s staff for doing
such an excellent job; you are all to be
congratulated.

Depuis 2004, la Galerie bâtit une fondation
solide à l’appui de sa croissance
par la mise à jour de son plan stratégique
opérationnel et la production, tout
récemment, d’un manuel des politiques
et procédures. Leur achèvement fait
de 2007 une année de consolidation et
contribue au travail préparatoire administratif
de la planification en cours du
futur édifice.
Dès le début de 2007, la Galerie a
dû relever le défi de la récupération
d’importantes composantes de
l’ancienne résidence d’O.J. et Isobel
Firestone à Rockcliffe avant sa démolition.
Grâce au propriétaire actuel, Neil
Malhotra, un plan a été approuvé pour
embaucher Commonwealth Historic
Resource Management Ltd. afin qu’elle
retire des éléments architecturaux de la
maison et la Ville d’Ottawa a offert de
les entreposer dans une ancienne caserne
de pompiers. Le budget de 2007 ne
prévoyait pas le coût du projet, mais la
chance de réunir des éléments de la maison
originale avec les œuvres de la Collection
Firestone, à une date future dans
un nouveau foyer, était irrésistible.
Un autre projet pour lequel la Galerie
a obtenu beaucoup d’appui est sa tentative
de se reloger dans l’ancien Pavillon
Canada-Monde, promenade Sussex. Son
besoin pressant de meilleurs locaux et la
disponibilité du Pavillon, conçu comme
un espace d’exposition public situé dans
un site historique exceptionnel, motivent
ce désir de relocalisation. La Galerie a

brillamment établi le bien-fondé de sa
cause et elle était sérieusement en lice.
Ses représentants ont aussi poursuivi les
discussions avec la Fondation de la Cour
des arts d’Ottawa, l’Auberge de jeunesse
et les fonctionnaires municipaux
sur le développement potentiel du site
de la Cour des arts par un partenariat
public-privé et ce projet est en cours.
En février, la Galerie a tenu son petitdéjeuner
L’art et ses partenaires où plus
de 150 invités ont écouté quelques mots
du maire Larry O’Brien et une causerie
d’Edward S. Goldenberg, auteur de The
Way it Works: Inside Ottawa. Lors de cette
activité commanditée par le Groupe financier
BRC, la Galerie a pu recueillir
18 000 $ et lancer sa campagne des donateurs
avec l’objectif ambitieux de 150
000 $ en 2007 à l’appui des expositions,
programmes publics et activités éducatives.
Coup d’éclat!, l’encan d’art de 2007, fut
une réussite grâce à la fabuleuse générosité
de la communauté. Splendides
œuvres d’art d’artistes locaux, délices
culinaires des meilleurs restaurants et
traiteurs d’Ottawa, nombreux dons de
cadeaux et dévouement bénévole, le tout
conjugué a donné une superbe fête et
permis de recueillir 60 000 $ nets pour
les expositions et les programmes publics.
La Galerie destine L’art du golf aux gens
d’affaires afin de mieux s’en faire connaître
et conclure avec eux des partenariats

à long terme. Elle était ravie d’accueillir
les honorables John Baird et Jim Watson
comme mécènes honoraires. Durant le
dîner, ils ont diverti la foule avec leurs
amusantes réparties politiques et contribué
au succès de cette activité aux
billets tous envolés, ayant généré une
somme record nette de 36 000 $.
La Galerie est particulièrement reconnaissante
à ces sociétés, entreprises et
particuliers engagés depuis de nombreuses
années, notamment Bell Canada, Osler,
Hoskin & Harcourt, TELUS, Footeworks,
Heritage Brewing Company, la
fondation Walter & Duncan Gordon,
l’Ottawa Citizen, Glen A. Bloom (pour
les acquisitions); Jean-Pierre Gaboury;
Lawson Hunter et Nan Griffiths.
Grâce à l’entente de services artistiques
débutée en 2005, la Ville d’Ottawa
verse à la Galerie un financement de
fonctionnement triennal qui lui assure
une stabilité à long terme. Le Conseil
des Arts du Canada et le Conseil des arts
de l’Ontario ont accordé eux aussi un financement
annuel aux programmes et
activités, alors que la Fondation Trillium
de l’Ontario et Patrimoine canadien ont
financé des projets spécifiques. La Galerie
les remercie de cet appui essentiel.
Très actifs, les comités du conseil comprennent
le comité exécutif (chargé aussi
des finances) présidé par Sandy Foote;
le comité des candidatures présidé par
Jean-Pierre Gaboury; le comité de programmation
et des acquisitions présidé
par Jeff Thomas; le comité de la Collection
Firestone présidé par Lawson Hunt-
er, le comité du financement présidé par
Sandy Foote, et le comité de construction
présidé par Nan Griffiths.
Je profite de l’occasion pour remercier
deux administrateurs sortants : Jeff
Thomas qui a généreusement œuvré avec
nous durant six ans et présidé le comité
des acquisitions, et Sunny Pal, administrateur
depuis deux ans. Je souhaite
aussi la bienvenue à l’administratrice
Rosalie Favell, artiste et doctorante à
l’Université Carleton, qui a beaucoup
exposé au pays.
Un organisme comme la Galerie ne peut
fonctionner avec succès sans l’appui
de ses bénévoles, qu’ils se dévouent au
Service de vente et location, au conseil
d’administration ou au comité de financement.
La Galerie compte maintenant
un programme pour les étudiants
bénévoles. Toute notre reconnaissance
et mille mercis pour votre indispensable
contribution.
J’aimerais exprimer notre sincère gratitude
à Mela Constantinidi, la directrice,
et au personnel de la Galerie pour leur

Report from the Director
In 2007, the Gallery’s Board of Directors
and staff continued to reinforce the
strategic priorities identified in our operational
plan, which included strengthening
the Gallery’s engagement with
artists, continuing to present superb
exhibitions, enhancing public programs
(especially educational activities) and
placing more emphasis on the Firestone
Collection of Canadian Art.
The 2007 contemporary exhibition program
opened with Adrian Gollner: Win-
Win, emphasizing the artist’s clever use
of graphs, grids and Morse code; at the
same time, Dollar Store featured photographic
work by Colwyn Griffiths. Both
exhibitions were organized by our Curator
of Contemporary Art, Emily Falvey.
This was followed by Rereading, bringing
together artists Angela Grauerholz,
Klaus Scherubel and Raymonde April,
organized as part of the National Art
Centre’s Quebec Scene festival of arts.
On 21 June, coinciding with National
Aboriginal Day and the summer solstice,
OAG was proud to launch the exhibition
Oh So Iroquois, in collaboration with the
Aboriginal Curatorial Collective. Organized
by Ryan Rice, this important
exhibition included the work of 21 artists,
emphasizing the dynamism of both
traditional and contemporary Iroquoian
creative processes. Thanks to generous
support from Canadian Heritage, Oh So
Iroquois will be traveling to four more
art museums in Canada, accompanied
by the trilingual catalogue (Mohawk/
Rapport annuel 2007
English/French), a first for Canada. Our
2007 contemporary exhibition program
closed with two exhibitions: Orientalism
and Ephemera organized by artist and curator
Jamelie Hassan, was tellingly juxtaposed
with the evocative mixed media
works by Farouk Kaspaules in Be/Longing.
The Gallery’s Curator of Firestone Collection
of Canadian Art, Catherine
Sinclair, planned a series of intriguing
exhibitions for the Firestone Gallery.
This included Elemental Simplicity: Suzanne
Bergeron and Claude Piché, followed
by Tourist, highlighting the travels of
several eminent Canadian artists to different
countries in the early 20th century.
The year concluded with Myths of
the Land presenting landscapes by Group
of Seven members in relation to Norval
Morisseau’s potent imagery of the land,
juxtaposed with works by contemporary
Aboriginal artists, Ron Noganosh and
Michelle La Vallee.
Our public and educational programming
continues to attract more participants
as well as applause for its originality.
Our emphasis on educational
programs tailored to young people continued
with Art in the City, summer
camps for children and teenagers. During
the week-long camps, young people
worked with local artists, crafting
elaborate felt monsters, experimenting
with Indonesian shadow puppets, creating
scratch-on film animation and many
other delights.

Other ongoing programs included artists’
talks, curators’ talks, and panel
discussions. OAG also continued to host
The Factory Reading Series, a poetry
reading series sponsored by span-o (the
small press action network – Ottawa).
OAG has an important collection of contemporary
art by artists with strong ties
to the region. Every year we add to our
holdings, thanks to the support of Art
Rental’s volunteers, the Canada Council
for the Arts, and the generous donations
of individuals from the community.
In this regard, we acknowledge Glen
Bloom for his personal contribution to
our 2007 purchases. Artists themselves
generously gifted works and among this
year’s donations OAG was pleased to
accept 10 important 1970s works from
Duncan de Kergommeaux,
Increasingly, there are higher expectations
placed on the Gallery from government
funding bodies and sponsors,
as well as from our audiences and artists,
and we continue to rise to the challenge.
Board members are more engaged than
ever in championing the Gallery, and
our staff is constantly striving for excellence
in all aspects of our operations
and programs. The high calibre of our
overall programming is due to the commitment
and creativity of our staff, and
I would like to thank those responsible:
Emily Falvey, Curator of Contemporary
Art, Catherine Sinclair, Curator of the
Firestone Collection of Canadian Art,
Jennifer Gilliland, Collections Manager,
Véronique Couillard, Marketing and
Communications; Aimée Brouillard,
Administration; Gayle Kells, Develop-
ment; Jen Diorio, Art Rental and Sales
Service; Jill Ley, Finance; Amber Yared,
Public Programs; Laura Fauquier and
Howie Tsui, Information at the Kiosk;

and our technical installation team, Lea
Dunning and Blair Cockburn.
Our Board of Directors accomplishes
the responsibilities inherent in their role
as trustees with intelligence and grace;
they are engaged in furthering the goals
of the Gallery as well as taking on the
challenges of a new building project.
I would like to acknowledge the high
level of participation from our Board
members, in particular the Executive
Committee and our Board Chair, Sandy
Foote, and to thank you for so generously
giving your time and skills.
The Gallery has two overarching objectives:
to present and promote the creative
work of visual artists, and to ensure that
the experience of encountering art is
fulfilling to the visitor. We seek to create
meaningful opportunities that bring
together artists and their work with the
many people that are curious and interested
in understanding more about life
through art.

En 2007, le conseil d’administration et le
personnel de la Galerie ont poursuivi la
consolidation des priorités stratégiques
du plan opérationnel, soit renforcer
l’appui aux artistes, continuer la présentation
de superbes expositions, améliorer
les programmes publics, surtout les
activités éducatives, et mettre mieux en
valeur la Collection Firestone d’art canadien.
Le programme d’expositions d’art contemporain
de 2007 était lancé par deux
expositions conçues par Emily Falvey,
la conservatrice de l’art contemporain,
soit Adrian Gollner. Gagnant-gagnant, qui
soulignait l’emploi astucieux des grilles,
graphiques et code morse par l’artiste, et
Dollarama sur les photographies de Colwyn
Griffiths. Suivait Relectures, organisée
pour Scène Québec, le festival du
Centre national des arts, qui réunissait
Angela Grauerholz, Klaus Scherubel et
Raymonde April.
Le 21 juin, solstice d’été et Journée nationale
des Autochtones, la Galerie était
fière d’inaugurer Tellement iroquois, en
collaboration avec le Collectif des conservateurs
autochtones. Organisée par
Ryan Rice, cette importante exposition
qui proposait le travail de 21 artistes
révélait le dynamisme des processus créateurs
iroquoiens tant traditionnels que
contemporains. Grâce au généreux appui
de Patrimoine canadien, Tellement iroquois
sera présentée dans quatre autres musées
canadiens, accompagnée d’un catalogue
trilingue (mohawk, anglais, français),

une première au pays.
Le programme d’expositions de 2007 se
terminait par L’orientalisme au quotidien,
organisée par l’artiste et conservateur
Jamelie Hassan, éloquemment juxtaposée
au travail évocateur de techniques
mixtes de Farouk Kaspaules dans Désir
d’être.
La conservatrice de la Collection Firestone
d’art canadien, Catherine Sinclair,
a proposé d’intrigantes expositions dans
la galerie Firestone, dont Forces élémentaires:
Suzanne Bergeron et Claude Piché,
suivie de Touriste sur les voyages effectués
par plusieurs artistes canadiens éminents
dans divers pays au début du XXe
siècle. Paysages mythiques, qui concluait
l’année, mettait en relation des paysages
de membres du Groupe des Sept et de
puissantes images du territoire de Norval
Morisseau, jumelés au travail de Ron
Noganosh et Michelle La Vallée, des artistes
autochtones d’aujourd’hui.
La programmation publique et éducative
ne cesse de hausser sa fréquentation
et son originalité de récolter des éloges.
La Galerie a gardé le cap sur les activités
pour les jeunes avec L’art en ville,
des camps de jour d’été pour enfants
et adolescents. Durant ces camps d’une
semaine animés par des artistes locaux,
les jeunes ont créé des monstres en feutrine,
expérimenté le théâtre d’ombres
indonésien, produit un film animé par
rayage de pellicule et bien d’autres trucs
amusants.

Rencontres d’artistes et de conservateurs
et tables rondes se sont poursuivies, et la
Galerie accueilli À l’usine, une série de
lectures par des auteurs et poètes, commandité
par span o (le small press action
network – Ottawa).
Notre importante collection d’œuvres
d’art contemporain d’artistes bien enracinés
dans la région est enrichie chaque
année grâce à l’appui des bénévoles du
Service de vente et location et du Conseil
des Arts du Canada, et des dons généreux
de particuliers. Ainsi que soit remercié
Glen Bloom pour sa contribution
aux acquisitions de 2007. Les artistes
aussi se font mécènes et, parmi les dons
de cette année, la Galerie était heureuse
d’accepter dix œuvres importantes de
Duncan de Kergommeaux, créées dans
les années 1970.
Malgré les attentes grandissantes des
subventionneurs gouvernementaux, des
commanditaires, des publics et des artistes
à son égard, la Galerie reste à la
hauteur. En effet, les administrateurs
la défendent avec plus de détermination
que jamais et le personnel vise sans
cesse l’excellence dans tous les aspects
des programmes et activités. La qualité
élevée de la programmation globale
est due au dévouement et à la créativité
des employés et j’aimerais remercier
ceux et celles qui en sont responsables:

grâce et finesse, les responsabilités inhérentes

sont déterminés à faire avancer les objectifs
de la Galerie et à relever les défis
d’un projet de construction. J’aimerais
souligner le haut niveau d’engagement
des administrateurs, tout particulièrement
le comité exécutif et le président
du conseil, Sandy Foote : merci de nous
donner si généreusement temps et talents.
La Galerie a deux buts prédominants :
présenter et promouvoir le travail des
artistes visuels et faire en sorte que le
visiteur ressorte comblé de sa rencontre
avec l’art. Elle s’efforce de créer des occasions
riches de sens où les artistes et
leurs œuvres sont mis en présence des
nombreuses personnes qui cherchent à
sonder et à mieux comprendre la vie par
l’art.

History, Mandate and Vision
History
The Gallery’s history began in September
1988 with its opening as The Gallery
at Arts Court, led by its dynamic
first Director, Mayo Graham, under the
aegis of the Ottawa Arts Court Foundation.
In 1992, the City of Ottawa’s
recently acquired Firestone Collection
of Canadian Art was transferred to the
custodianship of the Gallery, renamed
The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG). The
same year, Anne Doran and a group
of energetic volunteers established the
Gallery’s attractive Art Rental and Sales
Service. The incorporation of the Gallery
as an independent charitable organization
took place in 1993, with the
election of its first Board of Directors
and the appointment of Glen McInnes as
Chair in the following year. In the mid-
1990s, annual funding from additional
government agencies provided a more
solid financial foundation for our evolving
contemporary public programs. As
the Gallery’s annual budget increases incrementally,
so does the number of staff,
programs and services, allowing more
people to participate through a variety
of activities and events.
About OAG
The Ottawa Art Gallery is an independent
non-profit public art gallery committed
to the presentation, interpretation,
dissemination and acquisition of
contemporary art for the benefit of the
local arts community. Our programs
explore a variety of issues and include
exhibitions, talks, lectures, tours,
youth programming and publications.
The Gallery has a growing Contemporary
Art Collection of works associated
with the region. It also houses the
Firestone Collection of Canadian Art,
which is presented through changing
exhibitions. The Firestone Collection
of Canadian Art is comprised of over
1,600 works of art assembled by Ottawa
collectors O.J. and Isobel Firestone.
Vision
To be the most vital modern and contemporary
visual arts institution in our
community.
Mission
The Ottawa Art Gallery is a leader in
our community. It is a cultural meeting
place, actively developing relationships
and fostering exchange between artists
and the diverse facets of our community.

Histoire, mission et vision
Histoire
Le premier des grands points de repère
de l’histoire de la Galerie est sans nulle
doute son inauguration en septembre
1988 sous le nom de La Galerie à la
Cour des arts, dirigée par Mayo Graham,
sa première et dynamique directrice,
sous l’égide de la Fondation de la
Cour des arts d’Ottawa. En 1992, la
Collection Firestone d’art canadien, que
la Ville d’Ottawa vient d’acquérir, est
confiée à la Galerie renommée La Galerie
d’art d’Ottawa (GAO). La même
année, Anne Doran et un groupe de
bénévoles énergiques mettent sur pied
son attrayant Service de vente et location
d’œuvres d’art. L’incorporation de
la Galerie comme organisme de charité
autonome a lieu en 1993 avec l’élection
de son premier conseil d’administration
et la nomination de Glenn McInnes
comme président l’année d’ensuite.
Au milieu des années 1990, le financement
annuel versé par de nouveaux organismes
gouvernementaux consolide
l’assise financière de ses programmes
publics d’art contemporain en plein essor.
L’augmentation de son budget annuel
mène à celle du nombre d’employés

Profil de la GAO
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa est un musée
d’art public indépendant et sans
but lucratif voué à la présentation,
à l’interprétation, à la diffusion et à
l’acquisition de l’art contemporain au
bénéfice de la communauté. Ses programmes
qui abordent un ensemble de
problématiques comprennent expositions,
causeries, conférences, visites
commentées, programmation pour les
jeunes et publications. La Galerie possède
une collection en pleine croissance
d’œuvres d’art contemporain d’artistes
associées à la région. Elle abrite aussi
la Collection Firestone d’art canadien
qu’elle fait connaître par des expositions
périodiques. La Collection Firestone
d’art canadien regroupe plus de 1600
œuvres acquises par les collectionneurs
d’Ottawa, OJ et Isobel Firestone.

Art Rental and Sales Service
Service de vente et location
Art Rental and Sales Service is a volunteer-run
initiative with a mandate
to promote the work of contemporary
regional artists through the sale, rental
and exhibition of their works. In 2007,
a total of 138 new works were accepted
and 45 works sold. Any profits generated
by Art Rental and Sales Service
contribute to the acquisition of works
for OAG’s permanent collection.
Dirigé par des bénévoles, le Service de
vente et location a comme mission de
promouvoir le travail d’artistes vivants
de la région par la vente, la location et
l’exposition de leurs oeuvres. En 2006,
42 œuvres ont été vendues et 128 œuvres
ont été consignées. Tous les profits
vont à l’acquisition d’oeuvres de la collection
permanente de la Galerie.
