www.sailingmagazine.netThe 3200 makes an easy 7 knots acrossChesapeake Bay.The 3200 interior is built to belightweight but doesn’t skimp oncomfort, above.obvious—and clever removablefabric mattress covers. These cabinssupport Jeanneau’s claim thatthe 3200 is a dual-purpose boat. And I confess the interior is surprisinglybright and comfortable.I like the fabric hanging lockers, they’re light, spacious and can beremoved easily. The doors are alsofabric and that’s a really good idea.Solid doors on a boat are alwaysa nuisance, and there is only somuch privacy to be had anyway.Naturally the 3200 is all aboutsailing, but Jeanneau has notskimped on the core systems.Water capacity is 21 gallons, fuelcapacity is 20 gallons and I suspectmost owners will opt for theoptional Optima house battery.A 15-horsepower Yanmar dieseland saildrive transmission arestandard. Engine access is fromboth cabins and from behind thecompanionway. The engine compartmentis well insulated.Under sailBack on the bay, the wind wassteady at 10 knots and we weremaking an impressive 7.5 to 8knots on a beam reach, matchingAndrieu’s polar predictionsspot on. Easing a bit deeper,we kept the boat moving wellon a dead run. I will state thatwe passed several of the 3200’scompetitors as we followed thewind up the Severn River, but Iwon’t name names. After several spinnaker jibeswe dropped the chute and gavethe 110-percent genoa a test. Thehelm was balanced as we cameup hard on the wind. Pinchinginside 40 degrees we kept movingat more than 6 knots. Givingup the helm I noticed for thefirst time that we had a real crowdaboard and yet the 3200 never feltcrowded. The cockpit is very wellthought out.The new 3200, which incidentallywas the European Yacht ofthe Year in 2008, is an intriguingblend of technology, performanceand practicality. It is a boat forour times, and with a base pricearound $160,000 and the supportof one of the world’s premierbuilders, the 3200 just may be theanswer to your dreams.Reprinted from Sailing Magazine, 125 E.
