The nature reserve of<br />
Kalambatrita, with<br />
an area of 28.55 ha,<br />
has a unique rich<br />
wildlife with high<br />
bio-geographical value.<br />
Here, there are species from the<br />
south, the east and the high plateaus<br />
of the island.<br />
This dense low altitude humid<br />
forest concentrates a high number<br />
of species considered to be<br />
critically endangered, including the<br />
Melanophylla alnifola, the Senecio<br />
kalambatritiensis, the Psychotria<br />
ivakoanyensis and the Psiadia<br />
dracaenifolia kalambatritiensis.<br />
Among these precious inhabitants<br />
of the reserve are six species of<br />
lemurs: the Eulemur collaris, the<br />
Eulemur fulvus rufus, the Hapalemur<br />
griseus spp, the Hapalemur griseus<br />
griseus and the Lepilemur mustelinus,<br />
all considered as endangered. This<br />
very unique environment is also home<br />
to 72 species of birds, 68 percent of<br />
which are endemic to Madagascar and<br />
16 percent are endemic to the region,<br />
and, last but not least, there are also<br />
41 species of micro-mammals, two of<br />
the species listed as endangered by<br />
the IUCN.<br />
The reserve is located 55 km to<br />
the east of Betroka, on the border<br />
between the regions of Ihorombe and<br />
Anosy. It is one of the richest areas of<br />
Madagascar in terms of species, with a<br />
rate of natural habitat for each altitude<br />
zone being close to 96 percent.<br />
