A multitalented artist born in Martinique, Roland Brival unveils a facet of his childhood in a book all kinds of lighthearted, informative and moving; “WOUJ - The world of Creole toys” translates in words and sketches, the magic of an unparalleled realm… Highlights of our chat with the author. onAir : WOUJ * se veut ouvert aux lecteurs de tous âges, entre illustrations carminées et fresques poétiques. D’où vous est née l’idée de revisiter le monde des jouets créoles de votre plume et pinceau ? Roland Brival : Comme tout le monde, j'ai fini par constater que la plupart des jouets qu'utilisaient les enfants d'aujourd'hui étaient issus du monde numérique. Ils ont abandonné la créativité des mains pour se tourner vers des modes de jeu plus abstraits. Cela m'a donné envie de leur parler de l'époque d'avant, celle où l'enfant et son rapport à la nature et à sa propre intelligence étaient au centre du dispositif. Je ne l'ai pas fait dans l'intention d'opposer une génération à une autre, mais simplement pour leur proposer, en complément de leur quotidien d'aujourd'hui, des réponses différentes, plus naturelles et plus en rapport direct avec leur environnement. Bien sûr, la nostalgie y est aussi un peu pour quelque chose, mais comment lui résister lorsqu'elle nous tient? J'ai voulu aussi rendre hommage à une forme de poésie créole qui a toujours fait partie de nos traditions orales. C'est d'ailleurs la langue habituelle des conteurs antillais dont les récits sont souvent orchestrés autour de "folles rimes" destinées à scander la parole. onAir: WOUJ* addresses all generations of readers, amidst crimson illustrations and poetic snapshots. What has inspired you to revisit the world of Creole toys with the tip of both your pen and brush? Roland Brival: Like most people, I have been compelled to notice that most of the toys used by kids nowadays belong to the world of electronics. They have left handicrafts to a side and moved towards more abstract ways of playing. Which inspires me to tell them about how it used to be, when children and their relationship to nature and their own intellect lied at the heart of the whole process. I do not mean to set one generation against the other, but rather to give them access, in complement to their daily habits, to alternative answers, more natural and directly connected to their environment. Obviously, there is also a bit of nostalgia going on, but how can one turn away from it once it’s knocked on the door? I also wanted to pay tribute to a Creole poetic form which is deeply embedded in our oral traditions.
