Towards a circular

economy.

Towards 2025

Towards 2025 is a global brand-led initiative committing to 100% reusable, recyclable or

compostable packaging by 2025 or earlier. This initiative has gained support from major

international organisations with the launch of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation whose mission

is to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

Waste Management Hierarchy

The Waste Management Hierarchy is an internationally accepted guide,

setting out priorities for the most efficient use of resources.

The waste hierarchy places the highest priority on avoidance (action to reduce

the amount of waste generated) followed by resources recovery (reuse) followed by

recycling, reprocessing and then energy recovery. The further up the hierarchy, the more

2025 Packaging Targets

We recognise that packaging is often disposed of improperly after a product has been consumed.

These materials have value, and we are working on a broad set of solutions to ensure that they do not end up in a landfill.

The Federal Government Ministers agreed to the ambitious targets, which are:

l 100% of all Australia’s packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 or earlier

l 70% of Australia’s plastic packaging will be recycled or composted by 2025

l 50% average recycled content will be included

l Problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging will be phased out through design,

innovation or introduction or alternatives.

The 100% target will be delivered by the Australian Packaging

Covenant Organisation, working with its 950 member

companies and other stakeholders.

Purpose

We are committed to help Australia play their part in achieving the 2025 National Packaging Targets set out by the Environment

Minister. The purpose of this guide is to assist our customers to successfully integrate Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets

within their business, through design and procurement practices.

What is sustainable packaging?

The primary function of packaging is to contain and protect products from the point of manufacture, through the supply chain to the

retail store or end user, to attract people to buy a product to achieve more sales, and to provide product information. ‘Sustainable

packaging’ is packaging that performs this primary function, but also has lower environmental impact compared to existing or

conventional packaging.

Sometimes, achieving the lowest possible environmental impact can be a challenge, particularly when balancing various

environmental criteria with other functional and commercial considerations.

Business benefits

By integrating the packaging targets into core business activities such as design and procurement, businesses may achieve

a range of benefits:

l Improved reputation and market competitiveness by meeting customer or consumer expectations

for responsible packaging

l Cost savings from more efficient packaging and transport logistics

l Avoiding negative publicity associated with packaging that is perceived to be harmful for our ecosystems

Plastic identification symbols

To help consumers identify plastics when sorting them for

recycling, the plastics industry started a program of coding

plastic packaging with a recycling symbol either on the top,

or the bottom of the package. The numbers are not in any

particular order, therefore, one number is not more recyclable

than the other according to its number. The code indicates

which type of plastic resin was used to make that particular

product. Check with your local council to determine if recycling

is available for the plastic packaging you use.

Polyvinyl chloride is strong and has excellent water and

chemical resistance properties. PVC exhibits good weather

resistance and abrasion resistance.

Polypropylene (PP)

Polyethylene terephthalate is a condensation polymer that

is widely used as a packaging material due to its toughness

and clarity. It is widely used for the production of bottles for

soft drinks and carbonated beverages, and is the most widely

recycled type of plastic in Australia.

Polypropylene, in its natural state, is a fairly hard and cloudy

material. Because of its chemical make-up it cannot be

produced as a crystal clear material such as PET. It is one of the

lightest plastics available with a range of thicknesses.

density. As the density increases, so does the stiffness, hardness,

Castaway cups are manufactured in our own facilities right here

in Australia. By investing in local manufacturing, we not only

support our local economy, but we also reduce transportation

to a local level. All our facilities are HACCP certified ensuring

strict control of food safety and product quality.

Sustainably sourced paper

Castaway cups are made with paper sourced from certified

managed plantation forests. Paper is both renewable and

recyclable, contributing to a circular economy where materials

can be reused to produce new products.

Water based inks

We only use water-based inks for printing Castaway cups,

which are free from harmful toxic chemicals, and are made

from naturally occurring substances.

Recyclable

Castaway cups are accepted for recycling by many councils

throughout Australia. Made from water-based dispersion

coating, the new plastic free cups offer a more sustainable to

standard coffee cups.

We have developed a plastic free cups – making it easier to

recover valuable resources that might otherwise end up in

landfill.

Manufactured in Australia in HACCP certified facilities, the

new Plastic Free Cups offer an environmentally friendly viable

alternative to conventional coffee cups. By applying a unique

water-based coating to natural carton, these cups can be

easily recycled, without the need for designated plastic removal

systems as they is no plastic lining.

How different are they?

Castaway plastic free cups offer a more sustainable alternative

to standard coffee cups, and are part of our ongoing

commitment to provide sustainable and innovative packaging

solutions for our customers.

100% plastic free

They do not contain any plastics, bioplastics (PLA) or

waxes that are harmful for the environment or health.

Water-based coating

The barrier layer of this cup is a water-based dispersion

coating.

Printed with water-based inks

These cups are printed using high quality water-based

inks — preventing the use of hazardous solvent-based

inks.

Easily recyclable

By applying a unique water-based dispersion coating

to natural carton board, this cup can be easily recycled,

without the need for designated plastic removal systems

as there is no plastic lining.

Commercially compostable according

to EN 13432

Castaway plastic-free cups can be commercially

composted (if not recycled) and will disintegrate in 180

days under commercial composting conditions.

Glassine offers a very

smooth, thin paper with

a translucent appearance

that allows food contents to

remain visible. With liquid

and moisture resistance, you

can use glassine paper bags

for chips, pies, hot dogs and

various other foods cooked

in oil.

Foil lined paper provides

excellent resistance to

liquids, grease and moisture.

The inner foil lining has

excellent heat retention

properties making it ideal

for packaging and serving

kebabs, souvlaki, yiros and

hot chicken.

Greaseproof paper is

impermeable to oil and

grease, preventing the paper

from becoming soggy or

weak. Greaseproof paper is

Sizes

Measuring circumference

There are so many different bin sizes that it can be difficult

to find the correct fit. You can use the method below to

estimate the size of garbage bag or liner you need, by

determining width and length measurements.

Calculate bag width: Measure the circumference of

the bin and divide it by half.

Calculate bag length: Measure the height of the bin, then

add approximately 100-150 mm for an overhang. This will

help prevent the bag from falling inside the bin, and allow

you to tie the bag afterwards when it is full.

Types

EXTRA HEAVY DUTY

Extra heavy duty bags are highly resistant

to punctures and tears, and have superior

stretch and strength attributes. They

are ideal for heavy items such as wet

food waste and glass bottles, or for

environments where infrequent changes

are required.

HEAVY DUTY

Heavy duty bags have excellent stretch

capability making them easy to fit, as well

as lift out of the garbage bin when full.

They resist punctures and tears and are the

best all-round option for situations where

different types of waste are placed in the

one bin.

PREMIUM / KITCHEN

Premium liners and kitchen tidy bags are

made from higher density materials which

gives them more rigidity, and less stretch

and weight. They offer a cost-effective

solution for environments where frequent

changes are required, and are ideal for

offices and restrooms where only light

refuse is disposed of.


CLEAN-UP.

Seals

Star seal

Star seal bags have greater vertical

strength because the underside of the

bag is gathered, folded and sealed at

the centre of the base of the bag.

Choose a star seal bag for:

l Preventing leaks – sealed at the centre,

the bag is less likely to leak through a

seam

l Heavy duty applications – the bag will

hold more weight without breaking

l Easy removal – the star seal gives the

bag a more rounded shape when full,

making it easier to remove from the

garbage bin

Flat seal

A flat seal is where the seal has been

applied to run from one side to the

other side of the bag. The flat design

of the bags mean that they do not fit as

well to the shape of most garbage bins.

Choose a flat seal bag for:

l Reducing costs – flat seal bags

maximise volume capacity

l Light duty applications – flat seals

are not as strong as star seals or

gusseted seals

Gusset seal

A gusset seal bag is similar to a flat seal

but with both sides tucked in to make a

gusset.

Choose a gusset seal bag for:

l Maximising volume capacity – the

extra width provided by the gusset

allows more garbage to fit in the bag

l Wheelie bins – the gusset seal gives

the bag a more rectangular or

square shape, making it a good fit for

wheelie bins

FAQs.

Do EcoSmart ® products contain BPA?

No. Our packaging products are free from BPA and BPS, and

phthalates. We have, in fact, never used BPA in any of our

products.

Why do EcoSmart ® products use

recycled content?

Castaway ® is committed towards creating a circular economy

– enabling more packaging to either remain in loops, or have

the best possible opportunity to be recycled. The growing

challenge of plastic in the environment has stressed the urgency

to find solutions to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover ‘postconsumer’

plastic waste.

A more circular use of materials means lower costs and less

waste. Making products using recycled contents often uses

much less energy than producing the same products from

raw or virgin materials. It means new sources of value for our

customers and consumers, better risk management of raw

materials, and improved approaches to the supply chain.

What’s the difference between

“recycled” and “recyclable”?

Recycled means the container already has contents from

previous used material. In other words, recycled content means

that the new product you’re using was made at least in part

from content that has been recycled.

A product labelled as recyclable can go into the recycling bin

and be re-processed into new products. EcoSmart ® containers

are both recycled and recyclable – the best of both worlds.

Is recycling easy?

Recycling is easy once you know how to. Please empty,

and rinse all containers – make sure to remove any residual

food or product waste before recycling to prevent crosscontamination.

Most local councils have a kerbside collection of recyclables

that involve placing your recyclables out on the footpath for

collection on a set day – just like general waste collection. Your

yellow bin is for items that can be recycled.

What plastic can I recycle?

Different types of plastic must generally be kept separate for

recycling. The Plastics industry Association has introduced a

voluntary system of coding to help recyclers and the public

identify the type of plastic. A number in a triangle identifies the

plastic. The two types of plastic most commonly recycled are PET,

and HDPE (high density polyethylene). Other types of plastic are

not generally recycled in Australia.
