Rabbi’s Message
Rabbi Meeka Simerly
Shalom to each and all;
Temple Adas Shalom, thank you each and all for all welcoming notes, texts, emails,
messages, phone calls, flowers, assistance, and for coming to greet us in person. On
behalf of Dave, our pup Oreo, and myself, please let me reiterate how blessed we feel
being here, in person, at a community we have been preparing for months now to join.
We are thrilled and grateful to start the next chapter of our lives here in Maryland with
you.
At this time, I have met quite a few wonderful people of all age groups: some were born
and raised here, some moved to this area earlier in life, and some, like us, have moved
here more recently. But the one thing we all share is that we are HERE, and we are
NOW. No one has the capacity to predict what lies ahead “in the long run.” But as long
as we continue to show up in person, virtually, or a combination of both, I believe that
together we have the capacity to bring spiritual uplift to the community and beyond.
One important thing I wanted you to know is that I am available and completely
interested in getting to know you. That is a priority to me. So please don’t hesitate: to
call or email me! Let’s set up a time to meet and get to know one another.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the “Rabbi’s Search Committee” members
under the dedicated leadership of Melissa Immel and Wendy Darbinski. You have all
been so kind, welcoming, and helpful in settling in. Thank you, Todah Rabbah, to all.
In addition to getting ready for the High Holidays, I wanted to address all students,
teachers, and staff wrapping up summer while preparing for school. This blessing is
based on Rabbi Larry Sernovitz’s words. As we all embark on another journey of
learning this year, this is for us, our children, friends, and family members:
May we begin the new school year with an open mind, and an equally open heart.
May our smiles always be there for someone who needs it and may there always be a smile for us when
we need it, too.
May we ask more questions than the number of answers we receive or give.
May we receive much knowledge but give even more to those around us.
May we remember that new things are usually hard at the start but get better once we understand the
road ahead.
May we always know that life isn’t a straight path and that we sometimes need to scrape our knees a
little in order to grow.
May we realize that life was never meant to be easy and was never about where we ended up, but about
making the journey step by step and being the best humans, we can be.
President’s Message
Mark Wolkow
Lend a hand… or an hour
That’s all it takes to make a difference. It’s gratifying to browse through
our Temple directory and see how many people volunteer to help make
our congregation a community. Many of these activities are not at all
time-consuming. For example, attending a meeting once a month for an
hour, helping to plan a couple of events during the year, or greeting
people as they enter the synagogue. And there are many other
opportunities where we could use just a few extra hands.
If you have a particular area of expertise and would like to share it (or
utilize it), give me a call, text, or email. That could include, for example,
if you have experience with technology, communication/PR, fundraising,
investing, security, event planning, or other areas. Maybe you’d like to
try something outside your existing or professional skill set – do
something completely different. That’s great, contact me, and we can talk
about options.
We depend on one another to make our community the best it can be. So
whether you’re already engaged in a Temple activity; recently joined
TAS, or have been a member for 40 years; and regardless of your ability to
use Zoom, drive at night, or play an instrument, there’s a place where you
can help. I’ve promised our Board members that I’d be your “volunteer
matchmaker.” My contact information is in the Temple directory. So let’s
talk.
B’Shalom,
P.S.:
Mom needed new carpet in her Master Bedroom. In 3 minutes, I was able to download a
gift card from RaiseRight, pay for the carpet, and earned a rebate of $40 for mom and
a donation of $40 to the Temple. Sign up with RaiseRight today
Religious Practices Message
Melissa Immel
Greetings from the Religious Practices Committee!
The summer has ended, and we hope you have had an opportunity to
take time away from your routine and enjoy yourselves with family and
friends. As the Jewish year also ends, we look forward to celebrating the
holidays with you and spending time with you at Shul.
On Saturday, September 17th, from 6:15 to 8:00 pm, our community
will come together for the always-popular Selichot program – rolling
out a Torah scroll, changing the scrolls into their holiday whites, and of
course, the traditional Apple & Honey Bake-Off. Rabbi Meeka will also
lead us in a fun and engaging Film Screening & Discussion of Jewish
Food For Thought. Written and animated by Hanan Harchol, Jewish
Food For Thought: The Animated Series, is a collection of engaging
animated conversations between Hanan and his parents that explore
Jewish teachings on themes such as forgiveness, love, gratitude, and
many others. To close the program, members will support one another,
engage in reflection, and begin the recitation of Selichot. It is a brief yet
beautiful and meaningful service to begin the High Holy Days.
May this time of preparation draw us closer to those we love and toward
ourselves, and may we enter the renewed Temple Adas Shalom on Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur prepared for the majesty of the season.
Security Message
Pat Wolkow
Thanks to all who attended our in-person training offered by our own
Security Guard Team on August 21st.
Upcoming Security Activities:
• A visit to the Religious School Teacher Meeting on August 28th to update
teachers and staff on Security Procedures.
• Fire Drills!
Grant Updates: We are securing the building and congregants with
Funds from FEMA. We have purchased and continue to use two-way
radios to keep in contact with our guards and leadership. We have
megaphones to help guide members during drills and emergencies. We
will soon begin work on a Public Address System to alert broadly
throughout our building. A second grant was written and submitted on
behalf of the Early Learning Center to fine-tune some weak areas in our
security to guard us against any Hate-like incidents.
All these efforts do not substitute for each of us knowing what to do in
an emergency! Please attend training, participate in practice drills, and
read shared security documents. These actions assist you in being ready
if ever a situation arises so that you can make safe choices for yourself
and your family.
We are looking for additional help on our team to fine-tune policy and
procedures and carry our new initiatives on the drawing board. Meetings
are primarily via Zoom!
SEE SOMETHING? SAY SOMETHING! SO, WE CAN DO
SOMETHING!
