The Scout Oath
Since the publication of Scouting for Boys in 1908 by the
founder of Scouting Lord Robert Baden-Powell, all Scouts
and Guides around the world have taken a Scout (or Guide)
promise or oath to live up to ideals of the Scout Movement,
and subscribed to a Scout Law.
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and
morally straight.
The Scout Oath is a personal code of living, guide the way in
which each Scout lives his life and binds all Scouts together.
With the Scout Oath, a Scout is engaged to do his best to
obey the Scout Law and it mentions the main principles:
• Duty to God: Scouting strengthens the bond between
the Scout and God through nature study, to see what
God is, and by helping others, which is what God asks
of us.
• Duty to Others: The Good Turn is a key component of
the law and promise, because it is the duty to others,
which according Baden-Powell is the main duty God
asks of us.
• Duty to Self: Scouting gives more exciting, better
alternatives to bad habits that will absorb the Scout’s
attention and gradually lead him to forget the old habit.
The boy is not governed by DON’T, but is led on by
DO.
Torah Portion Preview
For Tazria
Shabbat beginning April 12, 2024
This week’s portion deals with “Leprosy” the usual translation of the Torah’s skin
diseases. It includes infectious discoloring and bodily fluids on people, clothing,
and objects. Such natural events are treated in the context of the spiritual events
of purity and impurity. The priests observe the natural events to judge when to
quarantine or re-admit affected persons.
Commentators have much difficulty with the portions. The ancients used them to
diminish the spiritual engagement of women. Some modern commentators
ignored them (as Mark Washofsky did in his Jewish Living: A Guide to
Contemporary Reform Practice) but many others tried to wedge a small opening
of relevance in the text. Modern psychology can help us connect to the feelings
and thoughts of our ancestors. Their instructions are based on fear of great harm
through natural or spiritual processes, which they allayed through careful
observation and avoidance. Lack of knowledge bred overgeneralization, which
unfairly stigmatized large segments of the population. But even so, they tried to
re-unite the stigmatized persons into their community. Our efforts to accept
members of minority races and sexual preferences show that we have not yet
mastered this process.
We invite all to come to synagogue in person or on Zoom on Friday night to hear a
more in-depth interpretation from Rabbi Meeka (or this Sabbath’s lay speaker).
We also invite other views, interpretations, reflections, and even poems on each
Torah portion. If you have something to contribute, please email it to
RPC@templeadasshalom.org. This and prior previews can be found at Dr. David
Dirlam’s website by clicking on Changing Wisdoms Projects
