Orcas
Kathleen Bleakley
for Px
four pelicans glide through lake mist
one towards me
wintry camping breakfast
steaming tea: toasting you
next month would be your 67th birthday
nearly four years ago
we watched pelicans on Lake Illawarra
in those waning days
Here in Eden
looking out for killer whales
over the deep cobalt expanse
Remember us, seventeen years back
crossing the strait: Vancouver Island
to Orcas Island
you on deck the whole way
capturing every fin, slap and spray
your first and only Orcas encounter
On a windy cliff at Eden
I’m reaching back into years of
coming home
you smiling all the way downstairs
to the front door
you coming home to me
ringing your bicycle bell
discarding your helmet and work
toasting to us with our pre dinner beer
slow dining, sharing fruits of our garden and days
nightime, sheltering
in the cove
of your embrace
