Message de la Présidente honoraire
C’est avec grand plaisir que j’ai le privilège de m’associer cette année, pour
la première fois, au Cercle féminin des Nations Unies en ma qualité d’épouse
du nouveau Représentant permanent de la Confédération suisse auprès
de l’Office de Nations Unies et des autres organisations internationales à
Genève.
Après un tour d’horizon des riches activités du Cercle qui comprennent
non seulement des rencontres interculturelles dont le but est de favoriser
les relations entre les conjoints de diplomates de la communauté
internationale, mais aussi du bénévolat et des loisirs, c’est avec joie que
je découvrirai en votre compagnie, l’événement phare de la communauté
internationale, à savoir le traditionnel Bazar annuel de bienfaisance.
De nombreux échos positifs me sont parvenus à son sujet, sur sa
préparation, sur le formidable enthousiasme sans cesse renouvelé et
l’engagement sans faille des bénévoles de tous les horizons, mais aussi
sur l’engouement du nombreux public. Cette énergie, déployée dans le seul
but de récolter des fonds pour le financement de projets d’organisations
non gouvernementales en faveur de l’enfance défavorisée dans le monde,
se doit d’être soulignée. Le Bazar vient ainsi compléter concrètement
et utilement l’action diplomatique entreprise dans les enceintes
multilatérales de Genève !

Message from the President of the UNWG
Message de la Présidente du CFNU
The Declaration of the Rights of the Child which was drafted by the UN
Commission on Human Rights and adopted by the General Assembly of
the United Nations on 20 November 1959 reads as follows:
“...Proclaims this Declaration of the Rights of the Child to the end that
he may have a happy childhood and enjoy for his own good and for the
good of society the rights and freedoms herein set forth, and calls upon
parents, upon men and women as individuals, and upon voluntary
organizations, local authorities and national Governments to recognize
these rights and strive for their observance by legislative and other
measures progressively taken in accordance”, and then the declaration
outlines the principles.
In the words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “You can give without loving, but
you can never love without giving.”
Children are often amongst the first to be affected by the numerous crises
which have spread throughout the world. Referring to the above quotes, we
at UNWG believe that the spread of love and solidarity through concrete
actions that will help alleviate the pains of children in need constitutes the
best and safest investment towards peace and happiness for future generations worldwide.
As UNWG Bazaar celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, we coined the theme of our Bazaar 2012
“40 years of Love”.
On this anniversary year, we are again gathered in solidarity with all nations and people of the world,
with our hearts full of love to work together, to collect money for all those children in different parts of the
globe who do not enjoy the same access to nutrition, education, security, healthcare, etc., as we do, the
privileged few.
My sincere thanks to the Diplomatic Missions in Geneva for their invaluable support, to our generous
donors, and the continuing help from the Ville de Genève.
My special thanks to Mr. Tokayev, Director-General of United Nations Office of Geneva, and his staff for their
help, goodwill and hard work which contribute to make the UNWG International Bazaar a very special event.
I also extend my gratitude to the Chairperson of the Bazaar, Mrs. Laila Hilale, the Bazaar Committee and the
members of the Guild for their dedication and hard work towards the success of the Bazaar 2012.

Chères amies,
Depuis quatre décennies, le Bazar a été et demeure un événement
très important pour les membres du Cercle féminin des Nations
Unies. Il est au service d’une cause noble qui nous tient tous à coeur,
et à laquelle je compte m’investir tout particulièrement.
C’est pour moi, un grand honneur d’être nommée Présidente du
Bazar 2012.
C’est également un agréable devoir de contribuer au bon déroulement de
son organisation.
Je suis convaincue que je pourrai compter sur l’engagement et la
mobilisation du comité du Bazar ainsi que sur les membres du Cercle
qui ont toujours démontré leur soutien à cette cause.
La conjonction de leurs efforts contribuera cette année encore à
la réussite de cet évènement, et in fine à faire des heureux un peu
partout sur notre planète.
Comme les années précédentes, le Bazar 2012 sera une grande réussite, et ce grâce à la contribution
de son Excellence Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Directeur Général de l’Office des Nations Unies à
Genève, le personnel des Nations Unies, le travail incontournable des missions diplomatiques et la

Aims, Activities and Special Events of the UNWG
The United Nations Women’s Guild of Geneva aims at developing friendship
and mutual understanding among women from different countries
and at welcoming new comers within the Geneva International Community.
The Guild members share various activities and undertake voluntary
actions in order to assist needy children all over the world.
Activities
UNWG members take part in various activities made possible thanks
to volunteers willing to share their knowledge and passion: fitness,
hiking, language classes, cooking, art classes, handicrafts, bridge,
books, cinema, and visits, etc.
Coffee Mornings and Monthly Meetings
Each month, the UNWG organizes a Coffee Morning sponsored by
a Diplomatic Mission, giving the members the opportunity to meet
friends and to better know about other countries and cultures.
Members are also informed about the progress and the results of the
Guild’s activities. During the monthly meeting, members or guests give
a conference or a presentation about a topic of common interest.
Annual Events
Each year, the Guild organizes two art exhibitions, a bridge tournament, a Lunch and some cultural
evenings. But the most important annual events are the Bazaar and the Children’s Walk held at the
Palais des Nations.
The Bazaar gives the visitors a unique opportunity to purchase products and food from all over the
world offered by the Diplomatic Missions. The Bazaar aims at raising funds to finance projects in favor
of disadvantaged children all over the world. It encounters a bigger success from year to year due
to its noble goal and its multicultural atmosphere. The Children’s Walk allows raising funds to help
students with scholarships.
The monthly Newsletter provides information on the Guild’s activities. For further information, please

Buts, activités et manifestations particulières du CFNU
Le Cercle féminin des Nations Unies – Genève vise à créer des liens d’amitié et de compréhension
mutuelle entre femmes de nationalités différentes et à accueillir les nouvelles venues dans la
communauté Internationale de Genève. Les membres du CFNU partagent diverses activités
et entreprennent des actions solidaires dans le but d’assister des enfants défavorisés dans le
monde.
Activités
Les membres du CFNU participent à une multitude d’activités assurées grâce au dévouement de
bénévoles désirant partager leur savoir et leur passion: fitness, randonnées, cours de langues,
cuisine, ateliers d’art et travaux manuels, bridge, lecture, cinéma, visites, etc.
Matinées café et réunions mensuelles
Chaque mois, le CFNU organise une Matinée Café sponsorisée par les Missions Diplomatiques
donnant aux membres l’opportunité de développer des amitiés et de découvrir diverses cultures.
Des informations sont régulièrement communiquées sur l’avancement et les résultats des
activités du Cercle.
En outre, le Cercle organise une réunion mensuelle lors de laquelle des membres ou des invités
présentent des sujets d’intérêt commun.
Evénements annuels
Chaque année, le CFNU organise deux expositions d’art, un tournoi de bridge, un Déjeuner ainsi que
des soirées culturelles mais les principaux événements annuels sont le Bazar et la Marche des
Enfants qui ont lieu au Palais des Nations.
Le Bazar offre à ses visiteurs une occasion unique d’acheter des articles et des mets venant des
cinq continents et mis à leur disposition par les Missions Diplomatiques. Le but du Bazar est de
collecter des fonds pour financer des projets en faveur d’enfants défavorisés. Cette noble finalité
du Bazar et son caractère multiculturel font qu’il rencontre un succès de plus en plus grand
d’année en année. La Marche des Enfants permet de collecter des fonds afin d’aider des étudiants
avec des bourses d’études.
Le Bulletin mensuel du Cercle fournit des informations concernant nos activités. Pour

The Hiking Book
Only 35 CHF!
The Hiking Book, written in English, describes
70 magnificent hikes with beautiful colour
photos, all within two hours by car from
Geneva. There are hikes for all tastes, from easy ones
for the family to strenuous six-hour treks in the Alps.The
instructions give road directions to the beginning of the
hike, as well as directions for the hike itself.
The book is in a ring binder format, with a plastic folder
to enable each hike to be removed separately and
carried easily in your pocket.
All proceeds benefit the UNWG children’s fund.

Children’s Walk 2012
On a beautiful sunny day, the 5th
of September, we had the heartwarming
experience of holding
the Children’s Walk on the UN
grounds again. As it was the 10th
anniversary’ we wanted it to be
special. It was a memorable day
with about 700 students - the most
we ever had. The groups of children already felt the importance of
being an international family with responsibilities towards each
other.
Their enthusiasm and effort to walk in a well disciplined way
showed joy and pride. They were competing not with each other
but to show they cared by accomplishing more for other less
favoured students in other parts of the world.
All was very well organized with the efforts of ladies of UNWG
who worked with enthusiasm and efficiency. Our thanks also
go to the schools, directors, teachers and parents of Ecolint
La Châtaigneraie, Institut Florimont, Collège du Leman, Ecolint
Campus de Pregny, The British School of Geneva, Geneva English
School, and Ecole Moderne. We extend our deep appreciation
for donations of our sponsors: Hôtel Mandarin Oriental Genève,
Migros, BioApply, Noelline Sarl, the banks UNFCU and UBS, Mr. &

Marche des Enfants 2012
Par une merveilleuse journée ensoleillée, le 5 octobre dernier, nous
avons eu le privilège d’organiser la Marche des Enfants dans le parc
du Palais des Nations Unies. La Marche célébrait cette année son
10eme anniversaire et ce fut une journée mémorable avec plus
de 700 élèves, un record à ce jour. Les groupes d’enfants étaient
conscients d’appartenir à une grande famille internationale avec des
responsabilités envers les autres.
Leur enthousiasme et effort à marcher d’une façon disciplinée ont
généré joie et fierté. Tous les participants ont couru pour montrer
leur soutien à d’autres enfants moins favorisés dans différents
endroits du globe.
Tout a été très bien organisé avec les efforts des membres du CFNU
qui ont travaillé avec grand enthousiasme et efficacité. Nos plus
chaleureux remerciements aux écoles, directeurs, professeurs et
parents de Ecolint La Chataigneraie, Institut Florimont, Collège du
Léman, Ecolint Campus de Pregny, The British School of Geneva,
Geneva English School, and Ecole Moderne.
Nous tenons particulièrement à remercier pour leurs dons et

The 2011 Bazaar, once more, was a great success, thanks to the
efforts of all the members who gave their time unsparingly to this
flagship event of the UNWG.
The invaluable contribution of all our sponsors and generous donors
should also be mentioned, one of which was Honda which offered a car
for 1st Lottery price.
On behalf of the UNWG, we would again like to thank them all most
warmly.
The various activities of the Bazaar generated enough money to enable
us to help numerous children in need. Thus, we financed 75 projects in
48 countries around the world, for a total amount of 415,800 CHF.
Typically, projects are submitted by UNWG members. The fact
that projects are sponsored by members themselves is the moral
guarantee for the proper use of allocated resources.
Sponsoring members play an important role since their moral guarantee also provides us with the
assurance that the UNWG funding will really benefit poor children concerned.
The Bazaar is a great work of international solidarity, and there is no greater joy and satisfaction than
to know that from this activity, children somewhere in the world, will have again a smile or a ray of
light and sunshine in their lives.
The reports received, including photos of the projects implemented with UNWG funding, and letters of
thanks of the beneficiaries are a confirmation of the children’s happiness. These testimonies, some
of which are particularly enthusiastic, bring satisfaction and pride to the members taking part in one
way or another in this noble activity.

Le Bazar 2011, une fois de plus, a été un grand succès, grâce aux efforts de tous les membres qui
ont donné de leur temps, avec grand cœur, pour assurer la réussite de cet événement-phare du CFNU.
Il faut aussi souligner ici la contribution inestimable de tous nos sponsors et généreux donateurs,
comme Honda par exemple qui a offert une voiture pour le 1er Prix de la Loterie. Au nom du CFNU,
nous aimerions, de nouveau, les remercier tous chaleureusement.
Les diverses activités du Bazar nous ont rapporté une somme assez importante pour venir en aide à
des enfants défavorisés. Ainsi, nous avons pu financer 75 projets répartis dans 48 pays à travers le
monde, pour une somme totale de 415.800 CHF.
Comme d’habitude, les projets sont soumis par des membres du CFNU. Chaque membre parrainant
un projet est en quelque sorte le garant moral du bon usage des ressources allouées. Le membre
parrain joue un grand rôle puisque sa caution morale nous apporte aussi l’assurance que le
financement accordé par le CFNU bénéficiera vraiment aux enfants démunis.
Le Bazar est une grande œuvre de solidarité internationale et il n’y a pas plus grande joie et
satisfaction que de savoir, que grâce à cette activité, des enfants quelque part dans le monde,
retrouvent le sourire ou une parcelle de lumière et de soleil dans leur vie.
Les rapports reçus, les photos des projets mis en œuvre grâce au financement du CFNU, ainsi que les
lettres de remerciements des bénéficiaires de nos œuvres apportent une confirmation du bonheur
des enfants. Ces témoignages, dont certains sont particulièrement enthousiastes, sont une source
de satisfaction et de fierté pour les membres qui prennent part, d’une manière ou d’une autre, à cette
noble œuvre. Merci à vous tous.

A little touch of history: 40 YEARS OF LOVE AND OF A COLOURFUL UN EVENT (1972 – 2012)
This year is a very particular one for our Bazaar as we celebrate its 40th
anniversary: 40 years of love for needy children throughout the world
and 40 years of our joint effort to make one special day for International
Geneva and a brighter future for children.
In 1972, two major fund-raising events were organized. In February 1972,
the Guild prepared, under the responsibility of Mrs. Saku Pathmarajah, a
big charity event at the Intercontinental Hotel. Cocktails were offered by
the Permanent Missions, the dinner by different countries, wines were
donated by the local businesses, while the hotel opened its doors wide,
offering rooms for dancing.
The lottery with a value of 11,000 CHF was organized by the Guild
members. The proceeds from this charity event, the total of 35,000 CHF,
were officially handed over to Mr Winspeare Giucciardi, UNOG Director-
General. In accordance with UNWG wishes, these funds were used by
UNICEF for the benefit of the refugee children in Bangladesh.
The other big event, organized in December 1972, marked the beginning
of today’s Bazaar. It took place in the school next to the Matutina Parc
Residence in Petit Saconnex. It was followed by several others, held alternatively at ILO and the Palais des
Nations. As of 1988, the Bazaar settled permanently in the Palais: initially in the space between doors 13
and 15, and, since 1993, at the present location, at door 40.
At the beginning, there were no stalls of the Permanent Missions, but only an international stall selling
articles from all over the world donated by the Missions, a handicraft stall with items made by the UNWG
handicraft group, a food stall provided by Guild members, a book stall and a so-called “White Elephant Stall”,
which is a precursor of today’s bric-a-brac, toys and jewellery stalls.
The proceeds from the first Bazaars varied from 12,000 to 16,000 CHF, which represented a fortune, and
many children worldwide benefited from it. Our enthusiasm did not fade: with the generous support of
many donors and volunteers, recent Bazaars have more than 300.000 CHF. With the help of you all, we
have managed to finance more than 1,700 well-designed projects in over 100 different countries, with the
total value of 7,5 million CHF.

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Kassym-
Jomart Tokayev, Director General of the United Nations, for allowing
United Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG) to exhibit the Hyundai i10 car
in the United Nations compound.
Secondly, I would like to thank Hyundai Motor Europe Gmbh, Germany
for donating, as our first prize, this wonderful Hyundai i10 car
designed for city use.
Thirdly, I would like to thank Etihad Airways and Siddhalepa
Ayuerveda Health Resort, Sri Lanka for donating, as our second
