Dear Friends, 

For over 40 years, the United Nations Women’s Guild has, through its 

fundraising activities, sponsored projects to assist children in need around 

the world. 

One of the main sources of funding is its yearly Bazaar, which in addition 

to giving visitors the opportunity to sample a myriad of different foods, 

crafts and artwork from many countries, also directly benefits these 

projects. From the proceeds of last year’s Bazaar, the Women’s Guild had 

the opportunity to sponsor 69 projects in 45 different countries, including 

Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Pakistan and Sudan. This is an impressive result! 

I am pleased, in my first year as an Honorary President, to invite you to join us for this year’s Bazaar and to 

show your support for the worthwhile activities of the United Nations Women’s Guild.

Être membre du Cercle Féminin des Nations Unies donne la possibilité d’aller à la 

rencontre de l’autre et d’accomplir des actions ensemble grâce aux différentes 

activités proposées, qu’elles soient ludiques ou à but humanitaire. 

Ainsi, chaque année, le Palais des Nations accueille le Bazar de notre Cercle qui 

attire de nombreux visiteurs appartenant à la communauté internationale, mais 

également de plus en plus de Genevois. Cette grande fête qui réunit des pays 

de différentes cultures a pour but de contribuer à offrir un avenir meilleur à des 

enfants défavorisés en finançant des projets qui leur sont destinés. 

Je suis toujours heureuse de prendre part à cette belle aventure de partage que le Cercle nous permet de 

poursuivre. C’est toujours un plaisir de flâner parmi les différents stands nationaux qui nous permettent d’apprécier 

les artisanats variés et de goûter les cuisines du monde. 

Un grand merci aux Nations Unies, aux Missions, aux nombreux sponsors et à toutes les personnes bénévoles qui 

de près ou de loin rendent cette manifestation possible.

a good life depends on whether those capabilities can be used, 

abilities expressed and gifts given. If they are, the person will 

be valued, and connected to the people around them. And the 

community around the person will be more powerful because of 

the contribution the person is making.”

The UNWG Bazaar is a wonderful example of this community 

service, which brings joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction using 

the “capabilities, abilities and gifts” of ladies from every 

corner of the world. The Bazaar is the fruit of labour of 

countless dedicated women. They work together for the 

common goal of helping disadvantaged children. 

As the world continues to have wars, political and social upheavals, economic crises, and lifethreatening 

diseases, children around the world face the results and side effects of these adverse 

conditions. Our goal is towards these children, all of them from whichever country. They need to be 

set free – free to enjoy their childhood, to leave in peace and security, free from poverty, disease 

and ignorance. 

The funds raised from the Bazaar offer them a glimmer of hope and a chance to improve their lives. 

My sincere thanks for the invaluable support of the Diplomatic Missions in Geneva, our generous 

donors, and the continuing help from the Ville de Genève. My special thanks to Mr. Tokayev, 

Director-General of UNOG, Mrs.Tokayeva, our Honorary President, and UN staff for their support 

and willingness to open the doors of the Palais des Nations. 

Once again, let us join hands to assist the most vulnerable and needy of our global village and 

make the 2011 Bazaar a success.

Far too many children throughout the world are still 

paying the price of war, conflict and terrible suffering 

from illness and hunger. All children are beautiful and all 

of them deserve our help and protection whatever their 

background and whatever their circumstances. For this 

reason, the Annual International Bazaar organized by the 

United Nations Women’s Guild remains an important event 

through which to raise awareness and raise funding for 

children in need. 

This year’s Bazaar is no exception and the dynamic 

collaboration between the United Nations, Permanent 

Missions, the Geneva Authorities, the business community, 

and individuals is to make a large contribution to the 

international aid effort and bring hope to many vulnerable children from all corners of the world. 

It is indeed an honour and privilege for me to chair the 2011 Bazaar Committee. I would like to 

extend my deepest gratitude to His Excellency Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General 

of the United Nations Office in Geneva and his spouse, Mrs. Nadezhda Tokayeva, the Honorary 

President of the United Nations Women’s Guild, for their invaluable support. Similarly, I would like to 

express my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Marie-Paule Martinelli, spouse of the Swiss Ambassador 

to the United Nations and Honorary President of the Guild as well, who has been consistently 

helpful and supportive in our endeavours.

Aims, Activities and Special Events of the UNWG 

In keeping 

with the 

principles of 

the UN, the 

UNWG is to 

strengthen 

the mutual bond and to serve as a center 

of interest for women connected with the 

UN, the Permanent Missions to the UN and 

the Intergovernmental Organizations with 

headquarter in Geneva. 

UNWG aims are to assist children in need 

throughout the world, welcome and offer 

help to new arrivals to the UN community 

in Geneva, and promote and conduct 

activities of general help and cultural 

interest to members. 

In pursuant of the aims UNWG carries out 

a wide range of activities and events both 

educational and recreational. Over 500 

women benefit from these activities and 

events. An important activity of the Guild is 

the Annual Bazaar through which money is 

collected and children in need throughout 

the world are supported. Other activities 

include but are not limited to the following: 


• Educational activities – include 

the provision of language courses 

by qualified instructors in Arabic, 

Chinese, English, French, German, 

Spanish, and Russian. Courses 

are held for all level from Monday 

through Friday. 

• Recreational activities – include 

Jewellery Making, Social and Open 

Bridge, Choral Group, Hiking, Image 

Consulting, Fitness Training, Mah- 

Jong, Painting, Quilting, Flower 

Arrangement, Cooking, Book Club, 

Cine-Club and Visits and Culture 

and Monthly Lecture on Topics of 

interest. 

• Events: these include the Annual 

Luncheon, Monthly Coffee 

Mornings, Children’s Walk, Art 

Exhibitions and other special events 

requested by our members. 

We continue to improve our activities 

in order to meet the needs of the many 

diverse women in the Guild. We encourage 

all our members to take active part in these 

activities. My sincere thanks go to all the 

volunteers who give their time and skills 

and thus contribute to our activities.

Buts, activités et manifestations particulières du CFNU 

En accord avec l’esprit et les principes 

des Nations Unies, le CFNU sert de point 

de rencontre où se tissent des liens 

d’amitié, ainsi que de centre d’intérêt pour 

les femmes associées aux Nations Unies, 

aux organisations intergouvernementales 

dont le siège est à Genève et aux missions 

permanentes auprès de l’ONU. 

Les buts du CFNU sont de venir en aide aux 

enfants défavorisés à travers le monde, 

d’accueillir et de soutenir les nouvelles 

venues dans la communauté de Genève; 

il organise des activités d’aide générale et 

d’intérêt culturel pour ses membres. 

C’est ainsi que le CFNU offre tout un choix 

d’activités et d’événements tant éducatifs 

que de loisirs; plus de 500 membres en 

bénéficient. Le Bazar est une des activités 

les plus importantes du Cercle et permet 

de collecter des fonds en faveur des 

enfants défavorisés à travers le monde. 

Les activités du CFNU sont, entre autres, 

les suivantes: 

• Education – cours de langues : arabe, 

chinois, anglais, français, allemand, 

espagnol et russe. Ces cours, de 

divers niveaux, sont donnés par des 

enseignantes qualifiées du lundi au 

vendredi. 

• Loisirs – création de bijoux, bridge, 

chant, randonnée, « image consulting», 

gym, mahjong, peinture, « patchwork», 


arrangements floraux, cuisine, club 

du livre, club de cinéma, visites et 

culture, conférences mensuelles sur 

des thèmes intéressants. 

• Événements – déjeuner annuel, 

matinées café mensuelles, Marche 

des Enfants, expositions d’art et 

autres activités selon les souhaits de 

nos membres.

The Hiking Book 

Only 35 CHF! 

The Hiking Book, written in English, 

describes 70 magnificent hikes with 

beautiful colour photos, all within two 

hours by car from Geneva. There are hikes 

for all tastes, from easy ones for the family 

to strenuous six-hour treks in the Alps. 

The instructions give road directions to the 

beginning of the hike, as well as directions 

for the hike itself. 

The book is in a ring binder format, with 

a plastic folder to enable each hike to be 

removed separately and carried easily in 

your pocket. 

All proceeds benefit the UNWG children’s fund.

UNWG Projects 

Projets du CFNU 

Dear UNWG members, 

I wish to thank you whole heartedly for giving 

me the opportunity to serve for three years 

as Vice-President for Projects in a charitable 

organization such as the United Nations 

Women’s Guild (UNWG) whose noble mission 

is to help children in need. It was hard work 

but rewarding and varied, which the Sub- 

Committee for projects, under my leadership, 

has done with pleasure and dedication. 

This year, thanks to the strenuous and constant 

work of members of the UNWG as well as the 

generous donations from our partners whom 

we thank warmly, 69 of the 74 applications 

received were funded, thus, more than 93% 

of projects selected and distributed in 45 

countries. In addition, the Guild has allocated 

an emergency help of 6.000 CHF to flood 

victims in Pakistan for the purchase of food and 

drinking water. 


In addition, the programme called “Children’s 

Walk” has allowed the provision of scholarships to 

ten (10) underprivileged children of St Bernadette 

College in Dakar-Senegal as well as to ten (10) 

others in the Institute Luzolo, Democratic Republic 

of Congo for the continuation of high school in 

good conditions. 

In May 2011, the General Assembly elected 

among the new members of the Executive 

Committee, a new Vice-President for Projects, 

Gisèle Paraiso. I wish her a lot of success and 

I remain convinced that she will, along with the 

Sub-Committee for projects, give her best for the 

smooth running of the Guild.

Tchad - project 65 - Protégeons nos enfants contre le paludisme 

Chers membres du CFNU, 

Je souhaite vous remercier de tout cœur pour 

m’avoir donné l’opportunité de servir pendant 

trois années en tant que Vice-présidente 

chargée des Projets, une organisation aussi 

charitable que le Cercle Féminin des Nations 

(CFNU) dont la noble mission est de venir en 

aide aux enfants démunis. Ce fut un travail ardu 

mais enrichissant et varié que le Sous-comité 

des projets, sous ma direction, a accompli avec 

plaisir et dévouement. 

Cette année, grâce au travail acharné et constant 

des membres du CFNU ainsi qu’aux généreux 

dons de nos partenaires que nous remercions 

chaleureusement, 69 sur les 74 dossiers reçus ont 

été financés, soit plus de 93% de projets retenus et 

répartis dans 45 pays. En outre, le CFNU a accordé 

une aide d’urgence de 6,000 CHF aux victimes 

des inondations au Pakistan pour l’achat de vivre 

et d’eau potable. 

De plus, le programme intitulé “Marche des 

Enfants” a permis d’attribuer des bourses 

d’études à dix (10) enfants déshérités du 

Collège St Bernadette à Dakar-Sénégal ainsi 

qu’ à dix (10) autres de l’Institut Luzolo en 

République démocratique du Congo pour la 

poursuite de leurs études secondaires dans 

de bonnes conditions. 

En mai 2011, l’Assemblée Général a élu parmi 

les nouveaux membres du Comité Exécutif, une 

nouvelle Vice-présidente chargée des Projets, 

Gisèle Paraiso. Je lui souhaite beaucoup de 

succès et je reste convaincue qu’elle fera, en 

compagnie du Sous-comité des projets, de son 

mieux pour la bonne marche du Cercle.

Children’s Walk 2011 

Children are those marvelous beings in whom we trust all 

our hopes for a happy future, within a society with good 

quality of life for all. For this reason on October 7th, 2011, 

hundreds of children ran, not to beat records, but so that 

other children can reach further in their studies and achieve 

goals for an improved life through education and thus have 

a better future. 

This day has been satisfactory at all levels. We saw that 

on the jolly faces of the children because they ran a lot of 

rounds, and the smiles of the volunteers to whom I would 

like to express my gratitude for their devotion. Finally a 

huge thanks from the bottom of my heart to all our sponsors: 

UNOG, SIG, Hôtel Mandarin Oriental Genève and COOP. 

My particular thanks to the schools: Ecole Internationale 

de Genève: La Châtaigneraie and Campus des Nations,

Marche des Enfants 2011 

Les enfants sont ces êtres merveilleux en qui nous déposons 

tous nos espoirs d’un avenir heureux dans une société à la 

qualité de vie correcte pour tous. C’est pour cela que ce jour 

du 7 octobre 2011 des centaines d’enfants ont couru, non pas 

pour battre des records, mais pour que leurs semblables, eux, 

puissent poursuivre leurs études et atteindre leurs objectifs 

d’une vie plus juste à travers une éducation complète et un 

projet d’avenir plus concret. 

Cette journée s’est déroulée sous le signe de la satisfaction à 

tous niveaux, celle qu’on voit sur ces jolies frimousses après 

de nombreux tours, les sourires bienveillants de toutes nos 

bénévoles que je tiens à remercier pour leur dévouement. Pour 

finir, un grand merci du fond du cœur à tous nos sponsors:

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to Honda

Secondly, I would like to thank Mandarin Oriental Geneva for their generous 

donations for many years. 

With these and the donations of our other donors, the Lottery can once 

again expect to raise 100 000 CHF through ticket sales. Our thanks to 

the more than 150 corporate and private donors for honoring the United 

Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG) by donating prizes to our lottery. The money 

we raise through lottery ticket sales will be used to help impoverished and 

disadvantaged children around the world. (In the pages of this Brochure, 

please read about the children’s programs we have funded.)
