Yes, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me was pink, thanks to ourPresenting Sponsor, GoFresh Pink Guava Juice <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sime</strong> <strong>Darby</strong>Foods.It was a full house.Penuh sesak.Eager concert go-ers and die-hard supporters started arrivingas early as 4.00 pm, clad in a kaleidoscope <strong>of</strong> colours. Theycame complete with large rubber hands to support <strong>the</strong>irfavourite bands and some even with banners!5.00 pmThe BackstageAs <strong>the</strong> musicians got into <strong>the</strong>ir costumes and brought out<strong>the</strong>ir show-stoppers, we managed to catch up with some <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y waited for <strong>the</strong> show to begin.Last year’s winner, Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Connection was back for moreand ready to go all-out this year.“It is now more challenging for us as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r bands seemto have improved tremendously and <strong>the</strong>re are new entrants,”said En. Zaidi Jamaluddin, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vocalists from <strong>the</strong>band. “Still, I know that we will enjoy this year’s BOTB evenmore as we love doing this,” he added.As for Darbian Revival, <strong>the</strong>y meant business. En. HamkaUsman, who was <strong>the</strong> lead singer for <strong>the</strong> band last year,decided to ‘step down’ and let <strong>the</strong> band’s back-up singersto shine and show <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>ir talents. We even caught up withPn. Sharifah Mahani, mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> lead female singer DayangNormonalisa, and she revealed a secret.“Dayang actually got through <strong>the</strong> final stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> auditionfor Akademi Fantasia but she got a job <strong>of</strong>fer from <strong>Sime</strong><strong>Darby</strong> <strong>Plantation</strong>, thus she chose to pursue her career,” saidPn. Sharifah.She beamed with pride as she talked about her daughterand was impressed with <strong>the</strong> hard work put in by <strong>the</strong> bandmembers during <strong>the</strong>ir practice sessions.Sacred Crow, representing <strong>the</strong> <strong>Plantation</strong> Head <strong>of</strong>fices,recalled how as college students, <strong>the</strong>y individually aspired tobe part <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional rock band.“The meaning <strong>of</strong> Sacred Crow came about as we lookedfor two words which had opposite meanings. ‘Sacred’represented <strong>the</strong> bright side and ‘Crow’ represented <strong>the</strong>dark side”, exclaimed band member, Syed Umar. Were <strong>the</strong>yconfident in winning?“Our strengths are within ourselves. Each band plays adifferent genre, and it depends on <strong>the</strong> judges’ taste as well.From stage rehearsals, we saw that <strong>the</strong> band from R&D(Calix Phenomenal) have stepped up <strong>the</strong>ir game. Whateverhappens, we wish to return again next year,” said SyedRidzwan, ano<strong>the</strong>r member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> band which was onlyformed in October 2010.The same goes for Minamas Band, Tune 10, CalixPhenomenal and River <strong>of</strong> Life, who were spotted doing lastminute preparations and prepping up <strong>the</strong>ir rock appearances,clad in lea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> all shades and hairstyles from <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong>Elvis Presley right up to Mohawks and spike-dos.6.30 pmOpen Sesame!As doors opened at 6.30 p.m., KL Live concert hall wasfilled with an air <strong>of</strong> excitement as <strong>Sime</strong> Darbians startedclaiming strategic spots to get <strong>the</strong> best view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stage.The first order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day? Food! A variety <strong>of</strong> food items were<strong>of</strong>fered to staff and guests, who needed no coaxing to digin. He <strong>the</strong>n introduced <strong>the</strong> star-studdedpanel <strong>of</strong> judges. Rocker Hattan, who was also <strong>the</strong> HeadJudge, lovely songstress Francissca Peter and renownedleft-handed guitarist extraordinaire, Man Kidal made up <strong>the</strong>panel. Clearly <strong>the</strong> judges were an attraction <strong>the</strong>mselvesjudging by <strong>the</strong> roar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crowd and much earlier, <strong>the</strong>endless requests to be photographed by <strong>the</strong>ir adoring fans.And <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>the</strong> lights dimmed, spotlights centered on <strong>the</strong>stage and our emcee introduced <strong>the</strong> first band. The lights on<strong>the</strong> stage bounced <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> shiny guitars, drums, cymbals and<strong>the</strong> outfits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> performers shone brilliantly on a stage setupto bring on <strong>the</strong> stars. Adrenaline kicked in as <strong>the</strong> smallestband (4 members) for <strong>the</strong> night, Sacred Crow, started toplay. The band performed Bintang di Syurga by Peter Pan,Mr. Brightside by The Killers and Hysteria by Muse. Theaudience loved it and were craving for more!Our resident emcee, En. The guitarwas strummed to imitate <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> a traditional stringmusic instrument called <strong>the</strong> sape. They sang Kamelia bySweet Charity, Indai Blues by Splitfire and Zombie byThe Cranberries.The pretty ladies from <strong>the</strong> Minamas Band stole <strong>the</strong> limelightnext, with <strong>the</strong>ir melodious harmony and synchronisedmovements ala The Supremes, swaying to Corazon Espinadoby Santana and Hampa by Ungu. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir number,<strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> crowd eating out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hands.Next, Glenny Abel from Darbian Revival shocked <strong>the</strong> crowdand sent delirious chills down <strong>the</strong> spine with his high pitchedrendition <strong>of</strong> She’s Gone by Steelheart. The band also jived toMakhluk Tuhan Paling Seksi by Mulan Jameela and Kesal byElla. A few standing ovations were spotted from <strong>the</strong> audiencefor a band that was clearly talented.Calix Phenomenal was <strong>the</strong> only band to perform four songs,namely You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi, Pelesit Kotaby Search, Puteri Kota by Ella and Bintang Kehidupan byNike Ardilla. They brought about an infectious energetic vibewhich <strong>the</strong> crowd loved.River <strong>of</strong> Life showed <strong>the</strong> crowd what <strong>the</strong>y were made <strong>of</strong> when<strong>the</strong>y performed two songs; Livin’ On A Prayer by Bon Joviand Jeritan Batinku by <strong>the</strong> late P. Ramlee. They received <strong>the</strong>loudest cheers from <strong>the</strong> florescent green T-shirt clad teensfrom <strong>the</strong> BEST Programme. Why? Both parties were Southbased. Talk about a fantastic fan base!Finally, it was Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Connection’s turn on stage. Singingthree songs, Puteri Kota by Ella, Gadis Melayu by JamalAbdillah and Fool for Your Loving by Whitesnake, <strong>the</strong>band with a strong stage presence ended <strong>the</strong> string <strong>of</strong>performances with a bang.At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each bands’ performances, it was judgementday as <strong>the</strong>y listened to <strong>the</strong> judges’ comments and praisesand sometimes heart-wrenching critiques. Hattan wasplaying <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> Simon Cowell, while Fran and Man Kidalwere more neutral in <strong>the</strong>ir criticisms.10.00 pmSpecial AppearancesAs <strong>the</strong> results were being tabulated, four BEST Programmestudents came on stage to perform. Judging from <strong>the</strong>irperformance, <strong>the</strong>re will be a challenge to <strong>the</strong> BOTB title once<strong>the</strong>y graduate. Nurafiqah Norlin, from <strong>the</strong> BEST programmewas extremely excited and deeply honoured when she wasgiven <strong>the</strong> chance to perform two acoustic numbers with herthree colleagues. “It was surreal, it’s a once in a lifetimeexperience for me and I even got to meet Hattan, Man Kidaland Francissca Peter.”There were more star-studded performances waiting for <strong>the</strong>crowd. Man Kidal and Hattan elevated <strong>the</strong> evening with astellar performance, accompanied by <strong>the</strong>ir band membersthat got <strong>the</strong> crowd on <strong>the</strong>ir feet, singing along to Gerhana,with Hattan later switching <strong>the</strong> chorus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> song to ‘<strong>Sime</strong><strong>Darby</strong> Dalam Jiwaku’ (<strong>Sime</strong> <strong>Darby</strong> Within My Soul), much to<strong>the</strong> delight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crowd.Interestingly, <strong>the</strong>band’s drummerwas 10 year oldDanial, who played<strong>the</strong> percussionslike a pr<strong>of</strong>essional,somethingunexpected forsomeone hisage.
