My familyhad been sittingon our house roofthroughout thenight waiting for therescue boat to come.All of us now aresickly because wehave been soaked tothe bones with no dryclothes for spare.”Those were the wordsfrom a victim of thedevastating flash floodswhich hit Kedah and Perlisearly November 2010.The people who wereplaced in the relief centreshave lost their homes andthe floodwater took awaytheir life savings in a matterof minutes. The children atthe relief centre had a lookof fear and sadness on theirfaces instead of smiles andhappiness, despite it beingthe weekend of Deepavali.Help was needed on such alarge scale that it made thiseffort look like a prettytough job.Sime Darby Plantationprovided the much neededcompassionate aid to peopledisplaced by the floods thataffected Kedah and Perlis.On 7 November 2010, thecompany handed over thefirst batch of aid consistingof water, rice and biscuitsto Assistant Chief DistrictOfficer Pn. Sharifah RihanaSyed Hashim at the KotaSetar district office, whichwas turned into a floodoperations centre.Our team of good Samaritanssacrificed the luxuriousstretch of the Deepavaliholidays by coming allthe way from KL to helpwith the unloading of thecontributions consisting of628 cartons of mineral water,100 bags of rice, 10 cartonsof sardines and 272 tinsof biscuits.
