UM NewsHealth Metropolis for Healthcare Ecosystem Under One RoofA HEALTH Metropolis will be developed to create a healthcare ecosystem under one roof in Greater Kuala Lumpur / KlangValley.The construction of a world-class campus for healthcare and bioscience was one of the six entry point projects (EPP) identifiedfor healthcare to generate RM35.5bil incremental gross national income (GNI) contribution to reach RM50bil by 2020.This would help spur greater improvements in healthcare, one of the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) identified in the10th Malaysia Plan.The goal for this EPP is to create a thriving medical ecosystem located in one large campus as a launching pad for a series ofecosystems in other locations.University of Malaya would serve as the anchor for this project.Organisations such as the National Heart Institute, Columbia Asia, Sime Darby and International Medical University haveexpressed interest in participating and understanding the synergies of having access to trained professionals and innovativeresearch.With these and other efforts initiated by the university, can UM achieve world ranking as one of the Top 100 Universities in theworld in 5 years? The VC has made this UM’s strategic objective to be achieved in the next 5 years, but he and the rest of us atUM also realise that to achieve this objective we need the support of all groups who are interested in the quality of highereducation in Malaysia, and the most significant of these groups is without doubt UM’s alumni. With the support of its alumniin Malaysia and throughout the world, the campus community, its supporters from among the corporate world, the ProfessorsEmeritus, the Honorary Graduands, families and friends, we are confident that we can achieve this noble objective.As a start there will be a series of monthly gatherings in 2011 organised by the Institutional Advancement Centre (IAC)together with the International and Corporate Relations Office (ICR), for UM’s alumni according to year of graduation. We needyou to make it happen. We need to hear what you have to say about your alma mater and its future.
