AlumniTHE PAUMCLUBHOUSEPROJECTBy Hamzah Sidang MohammadAlumni Association University of Malaya (PAUM)Since its birth in 1989, The Persatuan Alumni Universiti Malaya(PAUM) has always dreamt of having its own clubhouse but thiswas not to be for many years. The most obvious reason beinglack of funds: Funds to acquire a suitable piece of land andfunds to build the clubhouse itself. However things changed for the better in 2000. T h r o u g hnegotiations with the University of Malaya authorities, a piece ofland belonging to the university was leased to PAUM for thepurpose of building its cherished clubhouse. The 4.95-acre pieceof real estate was leased to PAUM for a period of 15 years withan option of extending it for another 15 years. With this propertyin hand, PAUM started planning for the construction of theclubhouse, but it encountered a host of other obstacles; fundsbeing at the top of the list. In 2004, UM approved a loan of RM7million to PAUM for the purpose of building the clubhouse.PAUM then undertook a tender exercise with the constructioncost at RM6.8 million. In 2005, a ground breaking ceremony was officiated by the thenPrime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Followingthis, UM finally approved a loan of RM6 million to PAUM. In 2007a commencement of works ceremony was launched, officiatedby the then Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato MustaphaMohamad. However, in January 2008, PAUM received anotification from UM to stop work on the project. The universitywanted to take back the land for another project of theirs. Bynow, 25 per cent of the project had been completed, and PAUMhad spent close to RM2 million on the works. PAUM was offeredanother piece of land about the same size at a different location.PAUM had no option but to accede to the order. However, the project planned by the university did not take offand PAUM was given back the original piece of land. By now thecost of construction had escalated. The construction of theclubhouse alone would now cost RM 11million with probablyanother RM2 million needed to make it fully operational. TheRM6 million loan was no longer adequate. Another round ofnegotiations started and finally UM agreed to build theclubhouse for PAUM under the umbrella of UM Holdings Sdn.Bhd. However, the 4.95 acres originally allocated was reducedto about 3.25 acres. PAUM had no real objections to this as theoriginal building plans are not affected. The cost of fittings, furnishings and miscellaneous costs were needed to make itoperational was now PA U M ʼs responsibility. Works on theclubhouse have been revived, and targeted for completion byFebruary 2012. The clubhouse will either be rented to PAUM orbought over by PAUM. A decision has not been made as yet.PAUM is now in the midst of organizing a fund raising dinnerthemed: UMAlumni with the PM. It will be held at the Shangri LaHotel, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 3rd April, 2011.The main objectives are to raise funds for the clubhouse projectand Yayasan PAUM. It is also meant to bring together the alumniof UM, and to launch the alumni Roll of Honour. PAUM patron,Y.A.Bhg. Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor who is also thepatron of this dinner and the Prime Minister, Y.A.B Datuk SeriNajib Tun Razak are our distinguished guests of-honour.We hope to raise about RM2 million. The patron held a pressconference on 11th February, 2011, to announce the dinnerevent and to launch the dinner website. Being an alumnusherself, Y.A.Bhg. Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah truly believes thatthe alumni of UM deserve to have their own clubhouse and thetime is now.Through all the trials and tribulations, PAUM has emergedsatisfied and recharged. The clubhouse is strategically locatedat a site along Jalan Damansara between Kuala Lumpur andPetaling Jaya and is designed to accommodate the needs ofalumni activities and aims to be a centre for alumni networkingand networking between PAUM and UM for academicexcellence as well as assisting in the intellectual development ofthe undergraduates. When completed, the clubhouse will havemeeting rooms, banquet halls, multi-purpose halls, recreationalrooms, food outlets, a gymnasium, car parks, offices, aswimming pool, tennis courts, a s u r a u and a multimedialaboratory. The PAUM clubhouse is a symbol of pride for all alumni. Beingthe oldest and most successful university in the land and “atrusted brand”, it is unthinkable that the graduands of UM do nothave a clubhouse to call their own. And now that dream hasbecome a reality. There is still so much to be done and PAUMbelieves that it has the resolve, the know-how and thecommitment to make the clubhouse the symbol and pride of thealumni of the University of Malaya. PAUM needs more membersand appeals to all alumni to come forward to be members andcontribute towards the success of the PAUM clubhouse. This isyour clubhouse, cherish it, support it and empower it.19 TITIAN alumni
