Dear Pope Francis,
I hope this letter finds you well. lt is with great honor that I write to you today. lam currently
working with Sacred Heart Catholic School as a counselor, and I have heard stories that have brought me
to tears. ln working with the children I find great peace knowing that they have hope in their eyes and
continue to look to God for love and protection. I had a conversation with a child who shared, "l feel
safe here, God is here". A second child shared, "l miss my cousin, he liked to play football, I play football
to remember him". Yet another who also lost a cousin in the May shooting spoke, "my cousin is alive,
she is an angel in heaven". Those were just a few experiences that I shared in speaking with the
children. They are truly magnificent and a reflection of the love and kindness that God created in their
hea rts.
From being present in the community, lcan see much love has been dedicated to the memorials
and murals that are present across the town. There are crosses, stuffed animals, kind words, pictures,
flowers, toys, angel wings present in the town square, and all symbolize the unity of the community in
spirit. Many beautiful murals have been created with so much attention to detail, you cannot help but
feel overwhelmed with sadness when you realize their beautiful faces are no longer with us on earth. I
shed many tears during my time here, and I find myself teary eyed as I write this letter to you. lt was a
devastating tragedy that took place in this community, innocent lives were taken, both young and old,
and all are trying to healand recover from the devastation. lt is my personal impression that the
students at sacred Heart have a bright future ahead of them, they smile, have bright eyes, lovely laughs,
and kind hearts. I know that the faculty and staff at Sacred Heart have the best interest of the children
at heart, and will go above and beyond to service them and provide the best education and safety
possible. I humbly ask that you please pray over the school and the people of Uvalde, and that their
spirits heal and find peace from the pain in their hearts.
I pray that the peace exuding from the Vatican reaches this community throuBh your special
prayers. I myself visited vatican city in March of 2011, many years ago, but I remember the peace I felt
and the strong presence of God and all the saints. lt was a remarkable experience, and I hope to visit
there again one day. My patron saint is St. Anthony of Padua, and I find it a coincidence that after many
years, I now live in a city named San Antonio, God knows well his plan for all of us. My time in Uvalde
will be short, but the memories and experiences I have lived here will forever stay with me. As I travel
back to my home city of San Antonio in the next days, I pray that the children and staff at Sacred Heart
continue to heal and recover from the tragedy. I want to thank you for taking the time to reach out to
this community which needs much support and prayer, and for taking the time to read all the letters
from the children and staff at Sacred Heart Catholic School. May God be with you and with your spirit
always.
