<strong>Plants</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>Watershed</strong><br />
A vascular plant flora has been compiled for <strong>the</strong> Region <strong>of</strong> Peel and <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Credit</strong> <strong>River</strong> watershed, based largely on an updating <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peel<br />
County flora published by Jocelyn Webber in 1984. Published floras for<br />
jurisdictions adjacent to Peel, including <strong>the</strong> Regional Municipality <strong>of</strong><br />
Halton (Crins, 1986) and Wellington County (Stroud, 1941) were<br />
examined for relevant records within <strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>River</strong> watershed and a<br />
large number <strong>of</strong> naturalists and botanical specialists were consulted to<br />
identify additional data and records <strong>of</strong> vascular plants in <strong>the</strong> areas<br />
under consideration.<br />
A total <strong>of</strong> 1205 vascular plant species were identified as growing<br />
outside cultivation in <strong>the</strong> jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong><br />
(CVC). In <strong>the</strong>se local floras, 780 are native species in <strong>the</strong> CVC within<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>River</strong> watershed, two vascular plants have been designated<br />
species <strong>of</strong> special concern by <strong>the</strong> Committee on <strong>the</strong> Status <strong>of</strong><br />
Endangered Wildlife in Canada, ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and a<br />
pondweed (Potamogeton hillii). Fifteen (15) species within <strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong><br />
<strong>River</strong> watershed are considered provincially rare by <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
Natural Resources. A relatively large proportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> native species,<br />
in total 335 species, are considered rare in <strong>the</strong> Greater Toronto Area<br />
while 402 are rare within <strong>the</strong> watershed.<br />
The following tables summarize <strong>the</strong><br />
vascular plant flora in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Credit</strong><br />
