Queensland Flora Statistics The Queensland flora is the most diverse State flora in Australia, with 500 families, 2,917 genera and more than 12, 817 known native species across all groups (excluding fungi other than lichens). This diversity represents approximately 50% of the known Australian flora. Two families of flowering plants (Austrobaileyaceae and Idiospermaceae) and more than 56 genera and at least 2,400 species (30% of the State’s flowering plants) are endemic to Queensland. Many species new to science are being discovered in Queensland after more than 200 years of exploration and study. The number of known native species has nearly doubled since F.M.Bailey completed The Queensland Flora in 1913 and more than 530 species have been discovered or formally recognised for Queensland since the most recent previous census (Bostock & Holland 2007), including 400 species of algae and lichen. There are still many species to be discovered and formally described, especially in the non-vascular plant groups and in the fungi. Of the 8,449 known native vascular species, 1,074 are currently listed as threatened under Queensland’s Nature Conservation Act 1992. The conservation status of non-vascular plant species, algae, lichens and fungi in Queensland is largely unknown. So far only one algal species (Lychnothamnus barbatus) is listed under the Act. Queensland’s native species are spread across a great diversity of habitats, including 13 bioregions and more than 1,375 defined regional ecosystems. Regional ecosystems are defined as vegetation communities in a bioregion that are consistently associated with a particular combination of geology, landform and soil. The Queensland regional ecosystem classification is the most comprehensive in Australia and is incorporated into natural resource planning, conservation and state legislation (Vegetation Management Act 1999 and Environmental Protection Act 1994). The most common and recognisable species across the landscape are the wattles (Acacia, 308 species) and eucalypts (Eucalyptus and Corymbia, 222 species). These genera dominate and define many regional ecosystems throughout Queensland, as shown in the Queensland Herbarium Regional Ecosystem Description Database (www.derm.qld.gov.au/redd). Grasses (Poaceae) dominate the understorey over much of the landscape and comprise the largest vascular plant family in Queensland with 629 species 1 , followed by the Myrtaceae (601 species) and the Fabaceae (474 species) 1 . Approximately 1,258 non-native vascular species have become naturalised in Queensland since European contact. These species are now considered to be part of the established flora. A number of them have become invasive in natural ecosystems and pose a significant threat to the State’s biodiversity. Another 320 non-native species are considered to be on the verge of becoming naturalised (doubtfully naturalised, Appendix 1). More than 80 non-native species are currently listed as declared pests under the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. Fifteen native species have become naturalised in Queensland outside their native range. Table 1. Species statistics. Infraspecific taxa and hybrids are not counted separately in this table.
