Architettura pura, limpida, chiara, pulita, sana,<br />
Se dimentichiamo per un istante che un<br />
piroscafo è un mezzo di trasporto e lo<br />
guardiamo con occhi nuovi, ci sentiremo di<br />
fronte a un’importante manifestazione di<br />
temerarietà, di disciplina, di armonia, di<br />
bellezza calma, nervosa e forte. Un architetto<br />
serio che guardi da architetto (creatore di<br />
organismi) troverà in un piroscafo la liberazione<br />
di maledette servitù secolari.<br />

L’aeroplano è un prodotto di alta selezione.<br />
La lezione dell’aereoplano è nella logica che ha<br />
presieduto all’enunciato del problema e che ha<br />
condotto alla riuscita della sua realizzazione.<br />
Oggi quando un problema è posto, trova<br />
fatalmente la sua soluzione.<br />
Il problema della casa non è stato ancora posto.<br />

Se il problema dell’abitazione,<br />
dell’appartamento,<br />
venisse studiato come si studia il telaio di una<br />
automobile, si vedrebbero rapidamente<br />
trasformare<br />
e migliorare le nostre case. Se le case fossero<br />
costruite industrialmente, in serie,<br />
come i telai delle automobili, si vedrebbero<br />
sorgere forme inattese, ma sane, definibili,<br />
e l’estetica verrebbe formulata<br />
con precisione sorprendente.<br />

Il Partenone è un prodotto di selezione<br />
applicato a uno standard stabilito. Da un secolo<br />
ormai, il tempio greco era organizzato in tutti I<br />
suoi elementi. […]<br />
Mostriamo il Partenone e l’automobile perchè si<br />
comprenda che si tratta in campi differenti di<br />
due prodotti di selezione, l’uno realizzato<br />
compiutamente, l’altro in una prospettiva di<br />
progresso.<br />
Allora restano da confrontare le nostre case e I<br />
nostri palazzi con le automobili.<br />

In tutti I campi dell’industria si sono posti dei<br />
problemi nuovi, creando strumenti capaci di<br />
risolverli. Se si confronta questo fatto col<br />
passato, c’è rivoluzione.<br />
Mentre la storia dell’architettura si svolge<br />
lentamente attraverso I secoli, su stereotipi<br />
strutturali e decorativi, in cinquant’anni il ferro<br />
e il cemento hanno apportato acquisizioni che<br />
sono indice di una grande potenza di<br />
costruzione e di un’architettura dal codice<br />
rivoluzionaro. Se ci si mette di fronte al passato<br />
ci si rende conto che gli stili non esistono più<br />
per noi: c’è stata una rivoluzione.<br />
