National
Conference
and
Summer
School

Vincent
Hantam
Vincent
Hantam
was
born
in
Cape
Town,
South
Africa,
and
won
a
scholarship
to
the
Royal
Ballet
Upper
School
in
1973.

He
went
on
to
join
the
Scottish
Ballet
in
1975,
dancing
solo
roles
from
the
outset.

Principal
roles
soon
followed,
and
by
the
1980s,
box
offices
across
the
country
were
beginning
to
witness
a
curious
phenomenon:

requests
for
information
on
Vincent’s
performance
schedule.
Of
all
the
technically
demanding
roles
Vincent
has
danced,
Spectre
de
la
rose
has
been
his
greatest
triumph,
re‐creating
Vaslav
Nijinsky’s
legendary
role
in
a
production
staged
by
John
Gilpin,
who
was
himself
taught
the
role
by
Nijinsky’s
partner,
Tamara
Karsavina.
Roles
created
for
him
soon
followed:
The
Water’s
Edge
by
Robert
North,
Peter
Pan
by
Graham
Lustig,
Petrushka
by
Oleg
Vinigradov
of
the
Kirov
Ballet,
and
many
more.
After
sixteen
years
with
the
Scottish
Ballet
Company,
Vincent
decided
it
was
time
to
move
on.
He
joined
the
Napac
Dance
Company
in
South
Africa,
where
he
danced,
reproduced
ballets,
and
taught
the
company.

He
was
also
a
guest
dancer
with
the
Pact
Ballet
in
Pretoria,
dancing
in
Rudolf
Nureyev’s
Don
Quixote,
Sir
Fredrick
Ashton’s
Les
patineurs
(as
the
Blue
Boy),
and
reproducing
Spectre
de
la
rose.
In
1991,
Vincent
was
invited
to
teach
at
the
University
of
Dance
in
Cape
Town,
where
he
stayed
for
three
years
before
returning
to
Scotland.

The
Dance
School
of
New
Zealand,
Ballet
West,
Anniesland
Collage,
and
the
Dance
School
of
Scotland
soon
followed.
Vincent
is
based
in
Glasgow,
and
has
become
a
popular
teacher
with
visiting
dance
companies.
He
teaches
both
locally
and
abroad.

Christopher
House
Christopher
House
is
one
of
Canada’s
most
respected
dance
artists.
Born
and
raised
in
St.
John’s,
Newfoundland,
he
joined
Toronto
Dance
Theatre
as
a
dancer
in
1979,
was
named
Resident
Choreographer
in
1981
and
became
Artistic
Director
in
1994.
Christopher
House
has
contributed
over
sixty
works
to
the
Toronto
Dance
Theatre
repertoire
including
Glass
Houses,
Four
Towers,
Early
Departures,
Vena
Cava
and
Chiasmata.
He
has
created
works
for
Lisbon’s
Ballet
Gulbenkian,
the
National
Ballet
of
Canada,
Les
Grands
Ballets
Canadiens
and
Ballet
British
Columbia,
among
others.

He
has
also
directed
two
collaborations
with
Joel
Gibb
and
The
Hidden
Cameras,
and
directed
several
short
films
and
videos.
His
most
recent
choreographies
include
Pteros
Tactics
(2010),
the
“annotated
remount”
Nest
Redux
(2010),
and
Rivers,
all
for
Toronto
Dance
Theatre.

Rivers,
performed
to
the
celebrated
score
of
the
same
name
by
Ann
Southam,
premiered
in
April
2012
in
Toronto
with
live
music
by
Christina
Petrowska
Quilico
and
set
design
by
Michael
Levine,
and
was
subsequently
performed
at
the
Canada
Dance
Festival
at
the
National
Arts
Centre
in
Ottawa.
As
a
performer,
House
has
created
roles
in
works
by
Sarah
Chase,
Peter
Chin,
David
Earle,
Mark
Morris,
James
Kudelka
and
Peter
Randazzo,
and
has
often
appeared
in
his
own
works.
While
a
guest
with
Les
Grand
Ballets
Canadiens,
he
performed
the
title
role
in
Michel
Fokine’s
Petrouchka,
in
Kudelka’s
In
Paradisum
and
in
Nijinska’s
Les
Noces
as
well
as
in
his
solo
Schubert
Dances
at
the
Brooklyn
Academy
of
Music.
Christopher
House
has
participated
three
times
as
a
dancer
in
the
Solo
Performance
Commissioning
Project
with
Deborah
Hay
in
Findhorn,
Scotland.
He
premiered
his
adaptation
of
News
by
Deborah
Hay
in
December
2006,
and
presented
five
performances
of
this
solo
at
the
Canada
Dance
Festival
in
June
2008.
He
performed
his
adaptation
of
Hay’s
At
Once
in
London
and
Brighton,
UK,
in
early
December,
2011.
Artistic
Advisor
of
the
Professional
Training
Program
of
The
School
of
Toronto
Dance
Theatre,
House
has
taught
technique,
improvisation,
mindful
performance
and
creative
process
at
The
School
of
Toronto
Dance
Theatre
and
at
such
institutions
as
the
Juilliard
School,

He
has

for
his

Dance

2009,
was
made
an
honorary
doctor
of
letters
by
Memorial
University
in
2010,
and
received
the
Toronto
Alliance
for
Performing
Arts
Silver
Ticket
Award
for
Lifetime
Achievement
in
the
Arts
in
2012.
Christopher
House
is
an
Associate
Dance
Artist
of
Canada’s
National
Arts
Centre.

Murray
Kilgour
Murray
Kilgour
is
one
of
the
world’s
most
respected
dance
educators.
Mr.
Kilgour
started
his
early
dance
training
in
Vancouver
with
Kay
Armstrong.
He
continued
at
the
National
Ballet
School
of
Canada
with
the
legendary
Betty
Oliphant,
as
well
as
Daniel
Sellier,
Alex
Ursuliak
and
Nancy
Schwenker.
He
has
studied
character
dance
with
Eugenie
Farmanyants
and
Kira
Zatzepina
of
the
Bolshoi
Ballet
School,
as
well
as
classical
ballet
with
Eugine
Volukin,
who
is
now
head
of
Teacher
Training
at
the
Bolshoi
Ballet
School.
In
1967,
Mr.
Kilgour
joined
the
National
Ballet
of
Canada,
where
he
danced
many
soloist
and
principal
roles.
He
left
Canada
in
1971
and
joined
the
Royal
Ballet,
Covent
Garden.
In
1973
he
joined
Sadlers
Wells
Royal
Ballet
(now
Birmingham
Royal
Ballet),
where
he
was
a
soloist
and
principal
dancer.
During
his
performing
career
he
danced
in
ballets
by
Sir
Frederick
Ashton,
George
Balanchine,
John
Cranko,
Flemming
Flindt,
Mikhail
Fokine,
Celia
Franca,
Sir
Kenneth
MacMillan,
Heinz
Poll,
Antony
Tudor
and
Sir
Peter
Wright.
As
a
teacher,
Mr.
Kilgour
studied
educational
methods
at
the
Paris
Opera
School,
the
School
of
American
Ballet
and
the
State
School
in
the
former
East
Berlin.
He
took
summer
courses
at
the
St.
Petersburg
Ballet
School
(the
Maryiinski).

From
1980
to
1989,
Mr.
Kilgour
taught
at
the
Royal
Ballet
School—both
the
Junior
School
(White
Lodge)
and
the
Upper
School—teaching
classical
dance
for
boys,
pas
de
deux,
repertoire
and
character
repertoire.
Among
his
students
was
the
Yorkshire
boy
whose
determination
to
study
ballet
inspired
the
movie
Billy
Elliot.
In
1984,
Mr.
Kilgour
and
his
wife,
Nancy,
travelled
to
Beijing,
China
on
a
cultural
exchange
to
teach
ballet
and
repertoire
at
the
Central
School
of
Ballet
(China's
National
School).
They
took
two
students
with
them,
including
Billy
Elliot,
who
is
now
a
ballet
master
at
the
Royal
Ballet.

Adam
Cooper,
the
Tony‐Award‐winning
dancer
who
portrayed
the
adult
Billy
at
the
end
of
the
film,
was
also
a
student
of
Mr.
Kilgour's
at
the
Royal
Ballet
School.
Prior
to
his
return
to
Canada,
Mr.
Kilgour
was
senior
male
teacher
at
Central
School
of
Ballet
in
London,
England.

As
Head
of
Male
Dance,
he
was
instrumental
in
developing
all
aspects
of
coursework
for
the
boys'
training,
which
included
in‐service
development
of
a
three‐
year
course
of
study
involving
classical
dance,
repertoire,
and
pas
de
deux.
He
also
assisted
Ballet
Central
(the
graduating‐year
performing
group)
with
their
productions,
including
setting
works
from
the
classical
repertoire,
Bournonville
repertoire
and
works
of
Ashton
and
MacMillan.
In
2000,
Mr.
Kilgour
taught
as
a
guest
with
the
National
Ballet
of
Canada
and
the
National
Ballet
School.

Nancy
Kilgour,
OC,
CM
Originally
from
St.
Catharine’s,
Ontario,
Nancy
Kilgour
(née
Schwenker)
received
her
early
training
in
Canada
with
Betty
Oliphant
and
Celia
Franca.
Teaching
for
the
National
Ballet
School
from
its
inception,
she
also
both
performed
with
and
taught
for
the
National
Ballet
of
Canada.

In
1965,
she
was
one
of
the
first
two
Canadians
to
obtain
the
highest
Cecchetti
Examinations
in
England.
In
1967
she
was
awarded
a
Canada
Council
grant
for
study
in
Russia
at
the
Bolshoi
Ballet,
learning
methods
of
teaching
Classical
Ballet
and
also
completing
a
course
of
study
in
Character
Dance.
While
still
a
teacher
at
the
National
Ballet
School,
Nancy
was
invited
to
teach
for
the
school
in
Antwerp,
Belgium
associated
with
the
Royal
Ballet
of
Flanders,
and
in
1969,
to
teach
for
Erik
Bruhn
at
the
Royal
Swedish
Ballet.
In
1971
she
left
Canada
with
her
husband,
Murray,
to
work
in
England,
teaching
at
the
Royal
Ballet
School,
both
the
Lower
School
(White
Lodge)
and
at
the
Upper
School.
While
teaching
there
she
continued
studying
teaching
methods
at
the
School
of
the
Paris
Opera,
the
School
of
American
Ballet
and
the
Kirov
School
in
St.
Petersburg.
In
1984
she
was
invited
to
participate
in
a
cultural

teaching
ballet
and

taught
at
the
National
Ballet
School
and
Company.


She
has
recently
been
awarded
the
Order
of
Canada
for
her
contribution
to
dance.

Joyce
Shietze
Joyce
is
an
accomplished
teacher
and
examiner
with
many
years
of
experience.

Retired
from
full‐time
teaching
in
August
2008,
she
continues
to
teach
workshops
and
master
classes
throughout
Canada
and
the
United
States.
She
studied
at
and
taught
for
the
National
Ballet
School
in
Toronto,
Ontario
from
1961
to
1966.

During
a
portion
of
this
time,
Joyce
held
the
position
of
Cecchetti
Secretary.
Her
performance
experience
includes
dancing
with
the
Florida
Ballet
Company,
Xochephillian
Dancers,
and
the
Ami
Hai
Dancers.
Joyce
has
continued
her
professional
development
in
Historical
Dance
Studies
(1991),
Character
Dance
Studies
with
Kira
Zatespina,
Nancy
Kilgour,
Olga
Evreinoff
and
Ballet
Studies
with
Margaret
Saul,
Nancy
Kilgour,
Celia
Franca,
Sheila
Kennedy,
Glenn
Gilmour,
Jean
Geddis,
and
Olga
Evreinoff.
From
September
2002
to
2008,
Joyce
taught
at
the
School
of
Alberta
Ballet,
from
2000
to
2002,
she
was
the
director
of
the
Teacher
Training
Programme
of
Quinte
Ballet
School
in
Belleville,
Ontario,
and
from
1978
to
2000
she
was
Co‐Artistic
Director
and
Principal
of
the
School
of
Dance
in
Ottawa,
Ontario.

Joyce
continues
to
be
an
asset
to
the
Cecchetti
Society,
with
responsibilities
including
course
programming,
public
relations,
marketing,
financial
planning/budgeting,
and
personal
matters.

She
is
the
author
of
a
teacher‐training
program
and
a
children’s
syllabus.
In
1996,
Joyce
was
a
recipient
of
the
Council
for
the
Arts
in
Ottawa
Award
for
Excellence
in
Teaching.

She
has
also
been
awarded
an
Ontario
Arts
Study
Grant,
and
was
Assessor
for
the
Ontario
Arts
Council.

Currently,
Joyce
is
a
Trustee
of
the
Margaret
Saul
Scholarship
and
Chair
of
the
Cecchetti
Society
of
Canada.

Jane
Wooding
Jane
Wooding
started
her
ballet
training
in
Ottawa
with
Jacqueta
Northcote.
Entering
Canada’s
National
Ballet
School,
she
studied
with
Betty
Oliphant,
Nancy
Kilgour,
Daniel
Seillier,
and
Grant
Strate.
After
graduation,
Jane
continued
her
training
in
England,
Holland
and
Germany.
Ms.
Wooding
danced
with
the
National
Ballet
of
Canada,
performing
Romantic,
Classical
and
Contemporary
repertoire
from
1972
to
1978.
This
allowed
her
to
work
with
exceptional
mentors
including
Mikhail
Baryshnikov,
Erik
Bruhn,
Celia
Franca,
Karen
Kain,
Rudolf
Nureyev,
and
Veronica
Tennant.
Jane
then
joined
Canada’s
National
Ballet
School
staff
teaching

Jones
(special
History

a
Master’s
Degree
in
History

Winnipeg

Winnipeg
Art
Gallery’s
Education
Department
and
taught
art

the
Gallery’s

1998‐2010,
Kathryn

dance
history
in
the
Royal
Winnipeg
Ballet
School’s
Professional
Division,

its
Teachers’
Training

Kathryn
has

history

ballet

dance

the
