in italiano, inglese e cinese.
Michelangelo (6 marzo 1475-18 febbraio 1564) fu scultore,
e a esso immediatamente successivo.
The Palazzo Strozzi is known for its “Passports” to the city
and surrounding territory. Every Passport lists highlights
of a visit to Florence and Tuscany, sometimes linked to the
exhibitions at the Palazzo Strozzi, sometimes with another
focus, such as Families & Children. If a visitor goes to
at least five of the sights listed and gets their Passport
stamped at each, they can get in free to the Palazzo
Strozzi’s exhibitions. In addition to the Passport, visitors
can download an iPhone app with different itineraries in
Florence and its vicinity in English, Italian and Chinese.
This Passport highlights the places linked to
Michelangelo, one of Florence’s most famous artists.
Michelangelo (6 March 1475-18 February 1564) was an
Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer and
is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. During
his lifetime he was often called Il Divino (“the divine one”).
One of the qualities admired by his contemporaries was
his terribilità, a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur, and his
highly personal style laid the foundations for Mannerism,
the next major movement in Western art after the
Renaissance.
9
In the footsteps of
MIchelangelo In tuscany
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese,
near Arezzo, where his father was podestà. Apprenticed to
Domenico Ghirlandaio in 1487, he was admitted to the Medici
Sculpture Garden in San Marco by Lorenzo the Magnificent.
When the Medici were exiled in 1494 he went to Venice, then to
Bologna, and finally back to Florence where he was influenced
by Savonarola’s preaching. He carved the Pietà (1497–9), in St.
Peter’s on his first trip to Rome and by the time he returned
to Florence in 1501 he was an acknowledged master and was
allowed to turn his hand to the David, “the Giant”, which was
placed outside the Palazzo dei Signori on 8 September 1504. In
1505 Pope Julius II summoned him back to Rome where began
to design the pope’s colossal tomb. He travelled to Carrara
to select marble for the work, but by the time he returned
to Rome the project had fallen into abeyance. It was to be a
source of dispute and disappointment for forty years years.
Back in Florence, he was commissioned by Gonfaloniere Pier
Soderini to decorate the Sala del Maggior Consiglio with a
fresco depicting the Battle of Càscina, but he only completed
the cartoons before returning to Rome where, despite a certain
reluctance due to the fact that he had never yet tried his hand
at fresco painting, he decorated the vault of the Sistine Chapel
between 1508 and 1512. After 1516, the Medici popes (Leo X
11
and Clement VII) gave him several major commissions on
the San Lorenzo complex in Florence, but when the Medici
were once again exiled and the republic restored in 1527,
Michelangelo abandoned the work and turned his attention
to the defences of a city under siege by Charles V. He left
Florence for Rome in 1534 and stayed there till his death thirty
years later, on 18 February 1564. His body was stolen by his
nephew Lionardo, and “despatched back home wrapped in a
bail” “like so much merchandise”.
come scuola che come
Vi erano iscritti tutti gli
costituiva l’Accademia che
the Accademia was the leading
formed the Accademia
Monumento funebre fu
realizzato fra il 1564 e il ’74
in the sacristy of Santa Croce
before being solemnly buried
in the floor of the church by
the Buonarroti family chapel
on 12 March 1564. Over
sixty of his ancestors and
descendants were buried in
Santa Croce between 1400
built by various artists to

Pietà and the frescoes are
by Giovan Battista Naldini;
the Bust of Michelangelo
Narra Vasari che
Michelangelo – messo a
bottega da Ghirlandaio,
al lavoro in quel periodo
alla cappella maggiore di
Santa Maria Novella – iniziò
«a ritrarre di naturale […]
alcuni di que’ giovani che
18
lavoravano. Per il che,
tornato Domenico, e visto il
disegno di Michele Agnolo,
disse: “Costui ne sa piú di
della nuova maniera e della
nuova imitazione che, dal
giudizio datogli dal cielo,
aveva un simil giovane in
età cosí tenera». Per la
cappella di Palla Rucellai
nel transetto sinistro della
chiesa, Giuliano Bugiardini
realizzò, fra 1530 e 1540, il
Martirio di Santa Caterina
d’Alessandria, probabilmente
con l’aiuto di disegni forniti
da Michelangelo: i due
artisti furono infatti legati
da una lunga amicizia nata
nell’adolescenza, quando
frequentavano il Giardino di
San Marco.
Vasari tells us that
Michelangelo—who worked
under Ghirlandaio when
the latter was decorating
the chancel of Santa Maria
Novella—began “to portray
in the natural manner
[…] some of the young
apprentices at work. When
Domenico returned and saw
Michelangelo’s drawing,
he said, ‘He knows more
than I do’, and was amazed
at the new style and new
imitation produced by the
judgment of so young a
boy”. Giuliano Bugiardini
painted the Martyrdom of St.
Catherine of Alexandria for
the chapel of Palla Rucellai
in the north transept of the
church between 1530 and
1540, probably with the
19
help of drawings supplied by
Michelangelo, because the two
artists’ friendship went back
many years to their adolescence
when they both frequented the
Vasari narra che al Carmine
«disegnò molti mesi nel
[Michelangelo] “for many
papa Leone X bandì una
Raffaello e Michelangelo.
Risultò vincitore il Buonarroti
l’approvazione pontificia.
Di questa impresa, che non
vide mai il suo compimento,
restano a Casa Buonarroti
vari studi e il modello
Michelangelo ha realizzato,
The Medici parish church since
X held a competition for the
façade in which all the leading
artists of the day, including
Raphael and Michelangelo,
took part. Michelangelo’s
design was the winner and in
1517 he sent a plan to Rome
for the pope’s approval. While
the façade itself was never
built, Casa Buonarroti owns
various studies and a wooden
model for it. Michelangelo
built the Tribune of the Relics
for Clement VII
on the counter-façade
between 1525 and 1533. Two
Corinthian columns support
a balcony with three doors
Papa Leone X e il cardinale
Giulio de’ Medici (in
affidarono a Michelangelo
la cappella funeraria
di famiglia, detta poi
Sagrestia Nuova. È la prima
opera architettonica del
Buonarroti, commissionata
nel 1519, iniziata nel ’21
e che all’inizio del ’24 era
già voltata. L’esecuzione
delle sculture si protrasse
però a lungo a causa della
cacciata dei Medici (1527)
e dell’assedio di Firenze
(1529-1530); inoltre la
morte di Clemente VII e la
partenza di Michelangelo
da Firenze (1534) fecero
lasciare incompiuta la
Sagrestia, ultimata da Vasari
e Ammannati. Accoglie la
Tomba di Giuliano de’ Medici,
duca di Nemours (con la
(con la Statua di Lorenzo,
il Crepuscolo, l’Aurora) e
la Madonna col Bambino
(Madonna Medici) per la
tomba dei Magnifici Giuliano
e Lorenzo. Sulle pareti di
uno vano sotterraneo nel
1971 sono stati scoperti
disegni murali tracciati col
carboncino: tra essi autografi
di Michelangelo del periodo
in cui l’artista, dopo l’assedio,
trovò rifugio alle rappresaglie
dei Medicei presso un
canonico di San Lorenzo suo
amico.
Pope Leo X and Cardinal
Giulio de’ Medici (later Pope
Clement VII) entrusted
Michelangelo with designing
the family mortuary chapel.
30
Subsequently called the New
Sacristy, it was the artist’s
first work of architecture.
Commissioned in 1519, it
was begun in 1521 and by
early 1524 it was already
vaulted. The execution
of the sculpture, on the
other hand, was a far more
drawn-out affair due to
the Medici’s exile (1527)
and the siege of Florence
(1529–30). Clement VII’s
death and Michelangelo’s
departure from Florence
(1534) meant that the chapel
remained unfinished, later
to be completed by Vasari
and Ammannati. It contains
the Tomb of Giuliano de’
Medici, Duke of Nemours
(with the Statue of Giuliano,
Night, and Day), the Tomb
of Lorenzo de’ Medici, Duke
of Urbino (with the Statue of
Lorenzo, Dusk, and Dawn),
and the Madonna and Child
(Medici Madonna) for the
31
tomb of Giuliano and Lorenzo
the Magnificent. Some wall
drawings in charcoal were
discovered in an underground
chamber in 1971 including
three by Michelangelo’s own
hand, which he sketched
during the siege while a friend
Nel 1527, dopo la cacciata
dei Medici da Firenze,
Michelangelo abbandonò
i lavori iniziati per loro e
si mise al servizio della
Repubblica. Nel 1529, in
previsione dell’assedio
delle truppe imperiali, fu
investito della carica di
Governatore e procuratore
generale delle fortificazioni.
Progettò cortine e bastioni
che, dalla Porta di San
Miniato e da quella di San
Niccolò salivano sulla collina
includendo il convento, la
chiesa di San Salvatore
e quella di San Miniato
insieme con il Palazzo dei
Vescovi. Questi baluardi
erano muniti di artiglierie
poste in cannoniere ed erano
rivestiti di mattoni fatti con
imbottiture e sterco animale
33
per attutire i colpi delle
artiglierie nemiche; forse si
deve a lui l’idea di proteggere
il campanile di San Miniato
con materassi.
After the Medici were exiled
from Florence in 1527,
Michelangelo abandoned
the work he had begun for
them and placed himself
at the Republic’s disposal.
When it became certain in
1529 that the city would come
under siege, he was elected
to the post of Governor and
General Procurator for the
Fortification. He designed
curtain walls and bastions
running up the hill from the
churches of San Salvatore
were clad with bricks padded
La Galleria accoglie il
più importante nucleo di
sculture di Michelangelo:
oltre al David, il San Matteo
per il duomo del 1506 circa
e quattro Prigioni incompiuti
per la tomba di papa Giulio
II. Questo sepolcro tormentò
Michelangelo per tutta
la vita, costringendolo
a riprendere più volte il
lavoro in forme sempre più
modeste. Per Michelangelo
aspirazione della vita umana
è lo sforzo di liberarsi dal
peso della materia e l’artista
lotta per far emergere la
forma già esistente nel
blocco di marmo. Il David
fu posto nel 1504 sulla
ringhiera di Palazzo Vecchio,
ma la scultura – che si stava
deteriorando – fu trasferita
nel 1874 nella attuale tribuna
appositamente costruita
35
dall’architetto Emilio De
Fabris. All’Accademia è
esposta anche la Pietà di
Palestrina, già attribuita a
Michelangelo.
The Gallery houses the
world’s leading collection of
sculpture by Michelangelo,
comprising the David, a St.
Matthew for the cathedral
(c. 1506) and four unfinished
Prisoners for Pope Julius II’s
tomb. The tomb tormented
Michelangelo throughout his
life, forcing him to return to
the project again and again
on an increasingly modest
scale. Michelangelo saw
man’s task in life as shaking
off the weight of matter,
while the artist struggles to
reveal a form already existing
in a block of marble. In 1504
the David was placed on the
stone arengario platform
outside Palazzo Vecchio, but
to avoid further damage from
the elements it was moved
to its present purposebuilt
tribune, designed by
Emilio De Fabris, in 1874.
The Accademia also houses
another work formerly
attributed to Michelangelo,
the Palestrina Pietà.
La Sacra Famiglia con san
Giovannino (Tondo Doni) è la
sola tavola di Michelangelo
conservata, unico suo dipinto
rimasto a Firenze, forse il
quadro più emblematico del
Cinquecento. Vasari narra
che apparteneva ad Agnolo
Doni, marito di Maddalena
Strozzi. La straordinaria
cornice, il cui disegno è
attribuito a Michelangelo
stesso, fu forse intagliata
da Marco e Francesco del
Tasso. Termine post quem
per la realizzazione è il 1506,
quando a Roma si dissotterrò
il Laooconte alla presenza
di Michelangelo. Al gruppo
ellenistico s’ispira la posa
del nudo dietro san Giuseppe
mentre gli altri corpi
derivano da sculture antiche
già conosciute all’epoca. Le
37
scultoree figure della Sacra
Famiglia sono inserite in una
composizione serpentinata,
utilizzando una gamma
cromatica che è la stessa
della Cappella Sistina dopo i
restauri.
The Holy Family with
St. John (Doni Tondo) is
Michelangelo’s sole surviving
panel painting, the only
painting by him still in
Florence and possibly the
most emblematic work of
the 16 th century. Vasari tells
us that it belonged to Agnolo
Doni, Maddalena Strozzi’s
husband. The splendid
frame, purportedly designed
by Michelangelo himself,
may have been carved by
Marco and Francesco del
Tasso. The picture cannot
38
have been painted before
1506, when the Laocoön
was unearthed in Rome in
Michelangelo’s presence,
because the artist took his
cue from the Hellenistic
group for the pose of the
nude behind St. Joseph. The
other bodies were inspired
by classical sculpture
already known at the time.
The sculptural figures of
the Holy Family are set in
a serpentine composition,
using a palette akin to the
colour range in the Sistine
Chapel after restoration.
Michelangelo da un’antica
The episode is well known:
Lorenzo is impressed by a
faun’s head that Michelangelo
has copied from a classical
work, but he mocks him
because the faun’s perfect
set of teeth clash with his old
man’s face. So Michelangelo
secretly removes a tooth,
drilling the gum to make it
look as though it had fallen
out with its root. Struck by the
youngster’s skill, Lorenzo asks
his father to bring him with his
family to live in the palace on
joins the sophisticated Medici
Il museo conserva importanti
opere di Michelangelo: il
Bacco, marmo giovanile
commissionatogli a Roma nel
1496, rivela una straordinaria
reinterpretazione della
statuaria antica e mostra
il dio del vino che, ebbro,
solleva un calice mentre
un satirello alle sue spalle
assapora chicchi di un
grande grappolo d’uva. Il
museo accoglie anche il
Tondo Pitti, commissionato
nel 1505 da Bartolomeo
Pitti, e il David-Apollo
(diversamente identificato
come l’uno o l’altro
personaggio), che secondo
la testimonianza vasariana
sarebbe stato scolpito per
Baccio Valori, commissario di
papa Clemente VII a seguito
del ritorno dei Medici a
47
Firenze nel 1530. Il Bruto
– anch’esso ispirato alla
statuaria classica – venne
realizzato a Roma nel 1536
per il cardinale Niccolò
Ridolfi su ispirazione dello
scrittore Donato Giannotti,
esiliato fiorentino. Potrebbe
celebrare Lorenzino de’
Medici, novello Bruto,
che aveva assassinato il
tiranno Alessandro, suo
cugino. Il busto fu portato
a compimento dal seguace
Tiberio Calcagni. Al Bargello
è esposto anche il piccolo
Crocifisso ligneo, acquisito
dallo Stato italiano nel
2008 con attribuzione a
Michelangelo e precocissima
datazione al 1492-1495.
The museum hosts some
of Michelangelo’s most
important work. The marble
Bacchus, commissioned
in Rome in 1496, is an
astonishing revisitation of
classical sculpture. The god
of wine, clearly inebriated,
raises his cup while a satyr
picks grapes from a large
bunch behind him. The
museum also houses the
Pitti Tondo, commissioned
by Bartolomeo Pitti in
1505, and the David–Apollo
(variously identified with
one or the other figure),
which Vasari tells us was
carved for Pope Clement VII’s
commissioner Baccio Valori
in 1530, after the return
of the Medici to Florence.
The Brutus–again inspired
by classical sculpture–
was carved for Cardinal
Niccolò Ridolfi in Rome in
1536 on the suggestion of
writer and Florentine exile
49
Donato Giannotti. It may
commemorate Lorenzino de’
Medici, a latter-day Brutus
who murdered his tyrannical
cousin Alessandro de’ Medici.
The bust was finished by
Michelangelo’s pupil Tiberio
Calcagni. Also on display in
the Bargello is a small wooden
Crucifix purchased by the state
in 2008 and attributed to a very
young Michelangelo (1492–5).
dopo aver rotto, in un accesso
della Vergine. Fu poi l’allievo
Tiberio Calcagni a ricostruire
il braccio e a ultimare la
The museum has a Pietà on
All’inizio del 1504
Michelangelo aveva quasi
ultimato il David, e la scelta
del luogo in cui esporlo fu
affidata a una commissione
composta dai maggiori
artisti dell’epoca tra i quali
Leonardo, Botticelli, Filippino
Lippi, Perugino, Andrea
della Robbia. Il “Gigante”,
e per il suo trasferimento
occorsero molti giorni e
l’intervento di quaranta
macchinari; l’8 settembre
il David fu “svelato”
Nel 1872 venne stabilito, a
motivo del precario stato di
conservazione, di ricoverare
la scultura nella Galleria
58
dell’Accademia, e il difficile
spostamento ebbe luogo
nell’agosto del 1873, ma
solo nel 1882 fu terminata
it should be displayed. The
“Giant”, almost five metres
tall, was placed on the stone
arengario platform outside
Palazzo Vecchio. It took forty
men and some complex
machinery many days to
move the David from the
Opera del Duomo, but on 8
September it was “unveiled”
to the applause of the
citizenry. Its precarious state
of conservation prompted
the corporation to rule that it
be moved to the Accademia
59
was moved with some
difficulty in August 1873, but
the Tribune built to house it
was only completed in 1882.
The museum comprises
three main buildings: the
Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo
Clusini and the Corte Alta,
and a garden with an openair
the museum, established in
1875, revolves around the
Palazzo del Podestà, where
Ludovico Buonarroti lived
with his wife Francesca
Michelangelo fu per la prima
volta a Carrara intorno al
1496 a scegliere i marmi
per la Pietà di Roma; ritornò
poi nel 1505, come attesta
una lettera dell’artista che
ricorda come, quando papa
Giulio II della Rovere gli
commissionò la sepoltura
«stetti otto mesi a Carrara
a lavorare i marmi». Fu
nuovamente nelle cave del
Polvaccio nel 1516-1518, e
si vuole che risalga al 1525
la firma sul bassorilievo dei
Fantiscritti (il nome deriva
da un bassorilievo romano
con tre piccole divinità
fanti, cioè bambini, scritti,
cioè scolpiti nella roccia).
Analisi petrografiche hanno
attestato che anche il marmo
del David proviene dalla
stessa cava.
Michelangelo went to Carrara
for the first time in around
1496 to select the marble for
the Rome Pietà. He returned
in 1505, according to an
autograph letter in which he
says that, when Pope Julius
II della Rovere gave him the
commission for his tomb: “I
spent eight months in Carrara
working on the marble”. He
returned to the Polvaccio
quarries in 1516–18, while his
signature on the Fantiscritti
bas-relief [the name comes
from a Roman bas-relief with
three child, or “infant”, gods
carved, or “written” (scritti) in
stone] is thought to date back
to 1525. Petrological analysis
has confirmed that the marble
for the David comes from the
same quarry.

marmo statuario sul Monte
marmo da figura era stato
(mentre Carrara ricadeva nel
Previously marble for statues
had come from the Polvaccio
the higher cost of skilled
palazzo strozzI and the cIty
Since its inception, the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi has
clearly declared its mission to be ‘non solo mostre’ (not
just exhibitions). This means that since 2006, exhibitions at
Palazzo Strozzi have been considered merely a means—albeit
a powerful one—to reach the Fondazione’s main goal: to help
make Florence a dynamic contemporary city, and thereby
contribute to renewed quality tourism, increased economic
growth, and a better quality of life for its citizens.
The Fondazione involves the whole city, from hotel concierges
and taxi drivers to shopkeepers, tour guides and students, in
developing its programmes and communicating its mission.
The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi uses its exhibitions to create
exciting new ways for tourists and citizens alike to explore
the city, the county and the entire region of Tuscany. These
innovative programmes include Passports for foreign visitors,
students and families, GPS-enabled iPhone and iPad apps,
special itineraries, guided visits to the studios of contemporary
artists, travelling street theatre performances. The Palazzo
Strozzi organises international conferences, offers graduate
courses in museum management and conducts extensive
research on the economic impact of the city’s cultural strategies.
The main ‘laboratory’ is the Palazzo Strozzi, but the
experiments happen throughout the city and beyond.
story of the historical figures, works of art and famous
city itself. Eight panels trace the history of the Strozzi family
from its beginnings to the 20th century. The exhibition also
features the large wooden model of the palazzo attributed
to Giuliano da Sangallo or Benedetto da Maiano, kept by the
