The distribution by country or other geopolitical area is provided for each of the 1076 liverwort and hornwort taxa currently accepted in sub-Saharan Africa (i.e. Index Muscorum regions Afr 2, Afr 3 and Afr 4, excluding the part of Afr 4 to the south of South Africa). All country records are supported by at least one literature reference, and the number of taxa recorded for each country is given. Synonyms with their owning taxa are intercalated alphabetically in the list. Introduction Catalogues of the Hepaticae and Anthocerotae have been published for the East African Islands (Grolle, 1995 (1)) and for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, including Atlantic Ocean islands and Socotra (Wigginton & Grolle 1996 (2)). A similar checklist of the bryophytes of North Africa was published by Ros et al. 1999 (3). These catalogues and checklist sought to bring together all published records of liverworts for these regions, and provided for each accepted taxon at least one literature reference for each of the countries in which it had been recorded. Together they summarised current knowledge of the distribution of liverworts throughout the continent. Since the publication of the East African Islands (1) and sub-Saharan African (2) catalogues, a considerable bulk of new data on the liverworts of these regions has been published, and this has provided the stimulus to produce a new checklist. Clearly, this checklist is not a substitute for (1) and (2): those publications contain much additional information and should be consulted for details of synonymy and literature sources for country records. Grolle 1995 (1) in addition provides essential notes on selected genera and on many excluded taxa. The scope of this checklist is all of the Index Muscorum regions Afr 2, Afr 3 and Afr 4, except for the part of Afr 4 which lies to the south of the African mainland (south of latitude 35°S). The latter area encompasses cool-temperate and subantarctic islands from St. Paul and Amsterdam islands in the southern Indian Ocean to the Tristan da Cunha group in the southern Atlantic, all of whose floristic affinities are antipodal rather than African. Western Sahara is also excluded as its floristic affinities are North African. There are, however, no bryophytes recorded from that geographical region (Ros et al. 1999). Catalogues (1) and (2) have provided the main basis for the present checklist, and most country records are referred to those publications, which should be consulted for details of primary literature. In the few years since the catalogues appeared, many new publications have provided additional country records, and new taxa and synonymy, the latter being listed in Appendices 1 and 2. Also incorporated in this checklist are: a) the correction of errors, including some authorities of names, which remained undetected prior to the publication of (2), and the inclusion of some country records from overlooked literature,
