Synopsis of families and genera
Families are arranged alphabetically within each Class and Order. The placement of genera closely
follows Grolle 1983a (421), except for the Lejeuneaceae which follows Gradstein 1994 (122). Taxa are
assigned to 140 genera in 46 families (excluding the generic synonym, Fimbriaria, placed in round
brackets in this synopsis). The numbers in brackets against each genus indicate the number of taxa
currently accepted within the genus (but this number includes doubtful taxa which have not (yet) been
synonymised or rejected, and taxa identified only to the genus). The numbers in a small font refer to the
African Index Muscorum region(s) in which the genus has been recorded. Since the publication of Grolle
1995 (1) and Wigginton & Grolle 1996 (2), the genera Apomarsupella, Aureolejeunea, Kymatocalyx,
Mnioloma, Paracromastigum, Sphenolobopsis and Xylolejeunea have been added to the sub-Saharan list,
Hyalolepidozia has been removed, and Stenorrhipis placed in synonymy.
