Wil Tirion's SKY ATLAS 2000.0 (Sky Publishing Corp.) is undoubtedly the most widely used of alI sky charts
available on the market today. Until now, there was no single source containing detailed information about the
deep-sky objects plotted on its 26 charts.
All that has changed with SKY ATLAS 2000.0 COMPANION. It consists of a series of indexes which are
designed to help the amateur astronomer get the most from Mr. Tirion's charts. lt will help answer questions
such as "On which chart does NGC7789 appear?" lt will also help you answer the myriad of questions asked at
star parties, like "How big is that Galaxy?" and "How far away is it?"
The real beauty of SKY ATLAS 2000.0 COMPANION is its simplicity. Let's say you wanted to find the chart on
which the Andromeda Galaxy is located. Just look up "Andromeda Galaxy" in the ALPHABETIC LISTING 0F
OBJECTS (which begins on page 1 ) and you'll see the galaxy is located on Tirion sky charts 4 and 9. Many
objects have multiple names: each is listed in the index. For example, you can find the Andromeda Galaxy by its
name, Messier number (M31 ), or NGC number (NGC224). A wealth of information is also supplied, such as
type, classification, R.A./ Dec. coordinates, dimensions (in arc-minutes or arc-seconds), magnitude, and
constellation. Other interesting facts (such as size, distance, visual description, etc.) are also included. These
are described in detail beginning on page "vii".
In addition to the main index, each chart has its own separate alphabetic index (beginning on page 185), giving
you the ability to easily determine which objects are plotted on any chart.
With SKY ATLAS 2000.0 and SKY ATLAS 2000.0 COMPANION, you really have an unbeatable combination.
Now's the time to go outside and put them both to use!
Good Luck and clear skies,
Robert A.Strong
