BUON VENTO
Franco Nonnoi
the YCPR which was hosting the event. Above, Count Luigi Donà
archiviata. E allora avanti.
THE SPIRIT BEATS HISTORY
Ihave chosen this picture for my editorial, because it speaks for itself.
Gian Battista Borea d’Olmo the most painful trophy of his life, the
eyes full of sorrow of whom as seen fire, and the trembling voice, I am
convinced when he says “we will make it, we will do it again”. Bailli
de Suffren of 2009, never forget. While the dark cloud was screening
June’s sun, the boats were continuing to cruise, and the show went on,
and we were all standing there, on land with our hearts tight with
pain. An instant later, which is the next day, there is the Solidarity
Committee which works hard and tries to settle the chaos. With great
sorrow they are counting what is not there anymore-books, models,
trophies, and silvers which have fused in one incandescent metal block
here comes the desire of designing,, of reconstructing, of building
everything new. “Soon, very soon, we will redesign it as beautiful as it
was before and even more”, says Count Luigi Donà dalle Rose moved
to tears. Together with his brother Niccolò, he was the founder, in
winter season will be enough, I am certain, one is enough, and I’m
speaking after having already spoken to the owners.”On his side he has
the miracles of the Foundation, read on. Luigi Carpaneda, President “in
the year of the fire”, collects the abundant solidarity actions, and the raise
of hands of the numerous members and non members, that tell him:
“We will help you”. This is the spirit, the rest is already dismissed history,
and it time to move ahead. I got the information today the white
banner with the San Giorgio red cross will soon start fluttering on a new
Clubhouse, who will once again have the colors of the sky and clouds,
and I will see the lion which hugs the flag of my island once again, I have
always liked that gesture so much, and it will be easy to narrate a story
of a young Venice in Sardinia, of a summer of a lifetime ago.
l’anno. Vivendo a La Maddalena e frequentando
pilastro dello Yacht Club Porto Rotondo, Gian
volte invitato allo Yacht Club, mia moglie è diventata socia e insieme abbiamo
poco tempo prima concordato.
All’indomani dell’incidente,
a rassicurarvi.
Luigi Carpaneda
Presidente Yacht Club Porto Rotondo
Dear Members, dear new friends. Are few
months that I am the new president of the Yacht
Club Porto Rotondo. As most of you may know
I was born many years ago in Milan, I am an engineer
and the sport has taken me around the world.
I came to La Maddalena in 1966 and I fell in love
with this island, like my wife who is living here
the entire year. Living at la Maddalena and
going to Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo for many
years, I had the opportunity to know well the founders
of Porto Rotondo, the Dona’ Delle Rose
Brothers and the pillar of Yacht Club Porto Rotondo
: Gian Battista Borea d’Olmo, who I met when I was a boy. I was invited
many times to the Yacht Club, my wife became member and together we participated
several times to the Regatta of the Legionnaires. Glancing over the pages you
will find and article that goes back on my biography: many, very many beautiful
memories and most of them tied with this corner of Sardinia that is Porto Rotondo.
Through this article I wanted offer the chance to those that on the contrary do
not know me, of hearing something more about this new President.
As you may have known from the newspapers and may be seen in person that few
weeks ago the destiny has hit our beautiful Clubhouse, which, unfortunately, has
been hardly damaged by the flames started during the revamping works. However
I can assure you that it will be reconstructed as beautiful as or even more beautiful
than before and very shortly. This is ensured by the owners, who in the meantime
has put at disposal of the Club and the members some rooms at the Sporting
Hotel, which will become more and more a reference point also thanks to the agreement
for the catering that we had just recently signed with the own management
of the Sporting. The members of the YCPR should not feel abandoned or deprived
of the reference point. Everything will proceed fine. The Secretary and the Regatta
office are continuing regularly their activity, even from this new headquarters.
The programs scheduled for the season will continue as foreseen: the Columbus
Trophy on August 16th, the Big Game between 28th or 30thof August, the appointment
with the Vele D’Epoca [Vintage Sailing]-Stage of the Panerai Classic
Yacht Club Challenge between 10th and 13th of September. The Farr 40 will come
back in October (3rd -10th) and finally the Regatta of the Legionaries will
close this season 2009, that, I may remind you, has started in March with the international
Championship of the Optimist. Nothing changes not even for the Summer
School that keeps the same conventions and agreement for the sons and nephews
of members and associates. Following the day of the incident, the Club Consiglio
Direttivo had already constituted a Solidarity Committee lead by Count Luigi
Dona’ Delle Rose, with the task to prepare the plan of reconstruction of the Registered
Office in respect of the original design. Moreover, this committee will guarantee
that all the contribution that, Club’s members or friends would like to offer
will be used for the reconstruction.
The several testimonies of affection and solidarity that came from all over the
world and the competition between the members to give disposal of their professionalism
or their contacts to recovery what has been lost, allow me to reassure you
that you will have back soon your Club House and it will be beautiful as before
or even more than before. Your new president would like to greet all of you with
affection and wishes everybody Good Holidays. Porto Rotondo is so beautiful that
could only afford frequent visitors with happy faces.
Luigi Carpaneda
Presidente Yacht Club Porto Rotondo
mia estate. Ogni anno ritrovavo un gruppo di amici,
felici come me di tutta quella libertà che improvvisamente
ci pioveva addosso: giocavamo scalzi in
Gabriele Deiana davanti a casa, quasi tutti i giorni.
Luigi Carpaneda come vicepresidente.
o in reciprocità.
Buon Vento e buone vacanze.
PENSIERO POSITIVO
Leonardo Donà dalle Rose
Vicepresidente Yacht Club Porto Rotondo
Ihave grown up in Porto Rotondo, meaning that as a
kid I used to spend 3 months of my summer vacations
there. Each year I would meet a group of friends, happy
to have a great amount freedom all of a sudden: we
would play bare footed in the “Piazzetta”, we would run
on the docks playing water balloons. Clearly, my relation
with the sea started almost immediately: at 5-6 years old
I owned an Optimist which I would dock on the beach of
the harbor. Then later I had a 420, with which I used
to go everyday to hug the coast in front of my house with
my friend Gabriele Deiana. Then it was the time of a
Laser: I perfectly remember the days spent crossing Niccolò
and Zenone Della Valle’s catamaran. Those were
happy summers.
In the meantime, Porto Rotondo was growing , and my father dedicated his time
to the one-hundred thousand connected activities. Summer and winter. Impossible
not to take part to the activities of the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo. Two years
ago I candidate myself as Club Advisor , and since the past September when the
New Board of Directors was set, I am assisting the new President Luigi Carpaneda
as vice-president.
I believe in the importance of sports, both as a life experience, for young children,
and as a useful tool to challenge oneself if practiced at agonistic levels: and I believe
in regattas that its 30 years which they attract to Porto Rotondo’s waters
the most famous names of the Sailing world. I hope to be able to give my contribute
to the Club, in terms of supplying a new energy - addressed in finding new
sponsorships- and idea. For a series of forced circumstances this will be an important
and decisive year for the YCPR: it will be the year in which we will set
the basements for the construction of the new Clubhouse, which will certainly be
more functional then what it was before. I would like to transmit this certainty
to our members: reacting the way we are reacting to “fate” has given us the possibility
to intervene on the past and to improve things to our advantage.
I would like to send a warm thank-you to all the members, who, in such a difficult
moment have demonstrated with their messages and their words a great care
and a great devotion to the Club. We will keep up all our promises, and it
will be a nice season made up of traditional events, like the Big Game and our
important regattas, starting from the Farr 40 to the vintage boats, also thannks
to the contacts with the Yacht Clubs with which we are partnered. In September
we will welcome our friends ship owners and their sailors. We are also planning
a Treasure Hunt, to be done on sea and on land; and after the great success of
last year, we will do the second edition of the fishing contest with the friends of
the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Representing the second generation of the Donà who dedicate their energies to the
YCPR, I do with great enthusiasm. I hope that you will not deprive us of your
support and friendship.
We will put a lot of passion.
Enjoy the Wind, and Happy holidays.
inizialmente ho fermamente declinato.
Meglio invece
orientarsi dall’altra parte dell’isola”. Così fece e in questo modo abbiamo
letteralmente inventato Porto Massimo, a nord-est dell’isola della Maddalena.
Marina conosceva tanti giovani architetti che in quegli stessi anni
stavano finendo gli studi in Svizzera; li abbiamo coinvolti su Porto Massimo
In
seguito abbiamo lavorato su tante ville e condominii a La Maddalena, Costa
Smeralda e Costa Paradiso.
adulti ottimi marinai e poi ho imparato anch’io.
con il quale ho vinto l’oro al Campionato del Mondo a Trieste nel 1983;
Insieme a
E i Donà
“Vieni a
sportivo”. Non ne volevo sapere, all’inizio.
barca a vela di 40 metri viveva sei mesi all’anno, era socia dello Yacht Club
de France e spesso ospite dello Yacht Club Italiano.
Continuiamo a navigare, io e Luigi nei meandri
di un circolo importante e complicato. Insieme come sempre”.
A NEW PRESIDENT OF THE YCPR
Ididn’t expect they would call me to preside this Club. When the first call arrived
from Borea d’Olmo last winter, offering me the opportunity, I initially
vehemently declined. But then, well, here I am.
I am in Porto Cervo with my wife Marina, who is an architect, while I myself
am an engineer, by education and in spirit. Marina and I arrived here in Sardinia
in the ‘60s: a friend of mine was buying a piece of land at La Maddalena.
He asked my opinion and I advised him not to close the deal.
At least, not in the position the lot was in: too exposed to the wind, I remember
I told him, nothing good is going to come of it. It is better to face the other
side of the island. That is what he did, and like this we literally invented Porto
Massimo, north-east of the island of La Maddalena. Marina knew a lot of
young architects who in those years were finishing their studies in Switzerland;
we involved them on Porto Massimo, and built it despite the many difficulties.
Then we worked on a lot of villas and condominiums in La Maddalena,
from Costa Smeralda to Costa Paradiso. My relationship with Sardinia began
like that, although I had visited La Maddalena as a child in the ‘30s with my
father, and it was love at first sight. Marina has lived in La Maddalena for 40
years, and I go back and forth between Milan, Geneva, where Marina’s family
home is, La Maddalena and… oh yes, now also Porto Rotondo. But let’s take
it one step at a time. I was born in Milan, by coincidence; my mother was from
the Lago Maggiore, my father from the Garda Lake. My mother’s father was an
MP for the Partito Popolare, my grandfather on my father’s side, on the other
hand, was a farmer, MP for the Partito Liberale, and a mason. In Milan I did
my elementary schooling, in Via Spiga, High School at the Parini, and then the
Politecnico University. I became an engineer and that is still my profession, because
you remain an engineer all your life. Being born in a specific historic moment,
I went to war, with the Alpine troops: my first love was the mountain,
not the sea. But in the same years in which I was climbing mountains, I also
started fencing. My other great passion. When the war was over and I had come
back to Milan, I continued fencing with the Società del Giardino. I took
part in 2 Olympic Games (Melbourne in 1956 and Rome in 1960) and I won
the gold medal with the Italian Foil Team in 1956, and silver four years later.
Then I became captain of the Italian team. Marian was the Swiss champion in
Foil. I met her in 1958, when I was called to Villa Olmo to preside the jury of
a female Foil tournament, with participants from all over the world. Between
1950 and 1960, as if this were not enough, I raced cars: I did all the Millemiglia
of the time. But I also had time for sailing. As a child I sailed on the dinghys
with the Zucchi brothers, on the Lago Maggiore, and I never forgot it.
Then, once in Sardinia, and in order to create Porto Massimo, we built the
Club Nautico La Maddalena from scratch; Marina taught the local children sailing,
and these children grew to be excellent sailors, and then I learned too. My
boats are all called “Botta Dritta” (straight thrust), which comes from the fencing
jargon and was my “secret thrust”. Now we are at Botta Dritta number 6.
The important ones were Botta Dritta II, which was a one tonner and won the
Italian championship in Naples, the Botta Dritta III, a three quarter ton, with
which I won gold at the World Championship in Trieste in 1983, the Botta
Dritta IV, the J24 which I gave to the kids in La Maddalena, the V which is
the family boat, a 13 and a half meter which I keep at Palau, and with which
I won the Championship of the fortieth anniversary of the YCCS in 2007.
What fills me with pride is that the crew is constituted by guys who learned
to sail with us, at the Club Nautico La Maddalena. Moreover, for many years
it was the Committee Boat at the Porto Cervo regattas. In between, I was thunderstruck
by the Smeralda 888, a boat that was specifically created for the Ya-
cht Club Costa Smeralda (where I am a member, maybe I didn’t mention that):
on the Smeralda, Marina and I won everything that could be won. There are
so many of the guys here on the Farr 40, from Vascotto to Chieffi, whom I have
watched grow and who were part of our crews. With Carriero’s Mandrake
and Landolfi’s Brava, and the Smeralda we won a Sardinia Cup: I had Tiziano
Nava, Flavio Favini and Fede Valenti on board. With the Dan, a 6 meter from
1930 built for Christian X of Denmark, the kind who during the Nazi occupation
sowed the yellow David star on his uniform, and which I got back after
a series of different owners and restored magnificently, we won the World
Championship in Cannes in 1997; with the 5.50 Dalgra, which we found in
Caprera half abandoned, we won the Classic Yachts World Championship in
Cowes in 1998: again with Marina at the helm. We also participated in many
editions of the Regatta dei Legionari, here in Porto Rotondo: so many successes.
We knew the Yacht Club well and, as I say in my Editorial, in 1991 we
organized, Marina and I, an extremely successful Optimist World Championship:
we gathered more than 200 kids from all over the world! And then there
was a Star Open World Championship, with the most important yachts of
the moment, the American, New Zealand, and Australian ones. We had met,
through the friendship with his mother, Giambattista Borea d’Olmo, who was
little more than a boy. And the Donà dalle Rose, naturally, the masters of the
house in Porto Rotondo. So, why did I have to tell you all this? Oh yes, to get
back to that phone call by Borea d’Olmo, as I was saying, last winter. “Come
and be the President of the Club, he said, we need a man like you, a sporty
man.” I didn’t want anything to do with it, in the beginning. Then one day,
Marina said to me: “It means they appreciate you. Why don’t you try?”
“I will, if you help me”, I answered. And here we are. The interview takes place
during a stage of the Farr 40, in Porto Rotondo, in late April. Marina Carpaneda
listens to her husband’s tale. Every now and then someone calls her
away, the prize giving is in less than an hour, and she is the lady of the manor.
When the President finishes and leaves, only the two of us remain to go through
the notes. On her face you can see the traces of the sun left during a whole
life at sea, in her eyes the same intelligent light must have conquered Luigi,
many years ago. “With la Smeralda it was more than love, it was, I would
say, an almost physical harmony. I grew up on the water, I had an, American
grandmother who lived on a 40 meter sailboat six months a year, was a member
of the Yacht Club de France and often a guest at the Yacht Club Italiano.
My father, when I was a girl, introduced me to the world of regattas, on the
Geneva lake, and although I met this quite extravagant grandmother of mine
when she was already an old lady, she passed her love for the sea and for sailing
on to me through her blood. “I met Luigi in 1958, when I won the Swiss Foil
Championship. Then he converted to sailing, but I didn’t follow him right
away: I still remembered the toil of those regattas on the lake. Then there was
the Smeralda: love at first sight. That boat allowed me to get lost in thought,
while my body became one with it. What do we do here in Porto Rotondo?
We keep sailing, Luigi and I, in the meanderings of an important and complicated
club. Together as always”.

Troppa luce, inattesa quasi.
vittoria dell’Acura Miami Sailing Prix.
The show begins in Porto Rotondo, for the European fleet of the Farr
a few days he is busy greeting the ship owners and the sailors, “ if you
how to sail from Marina, when they were kids”, he tells me arrived here in
TOMMASO CHIEFFI, STATEGIST ON FIAMMA
“We did five trials, and very good ones, although today the wind really did not show
its face. We are getting close to the World Championship, and being in Porto Rotondo,
so many of us, well, it’s been great. This is the first victory for Fiamma, and
we hope it is not an isolated case. We started 4 years ago, but before now we had never
won a stage of the Circuit, so we are all really very happy. In this period of time
a great team spirit was clearly born”.
Nelle pagine precedenti, tanti i visi noti alla premiazione,
presieduta da Luigi e Marina Carpaneda, insieme a Wolfgang Schaefer
presidente della flotta europea. La vittoria della tappa
di Porto Rotondo è andata a Fiamma di Alessandro Barnaba
On the previous pages, we see so many known faces at the prize
giving, chaired by Luigi and Marina Carpaneda, together with
Wolfgang Schaefer, president of the European fleet. The victory of the
Porto Rotondo stage went to Alessandro Barnaba’s Fiamma
ge of the Farr 40 Circuit. But let’s proceed in order the calendar plans that
the 23rd of April we will meet at the white and light blue larch Clubhouse.
The sea has such a reverberation that we office men, who have just come
out of the most rainy winter one can remember, cannot keep our eyes
open. Too much light almost unexpected. Starting from tomorrow 12
boats, representing 6 nations (England, Swizerland, Ukraine, and united
states) will challenge themselves in the waters in front of Porto Rotondo,
and they will compete to obtain the best score in prediction of the final
ranking after all the stages of the circuit. After this appointment in Porto
Rotondo, the fleet will meet in Capri (for the Rolex Capri Sailing Week,
held on the end of May), then in Porto Cervo (Audi Invitational, June),
going through the category World Championship (always in Porto Cervo,
from the 24th to the 27th of June), till the last stage in Cagliari: the Farr
40 European Championship 2009, in the last moments of July.
This to give an account of everything, even if the president of the Mediterranean
Farr 40 fleet, Wolfgang Schaefer, here on Struntje Lighttogether
with his wife, has reminded all these appointments, during the opening
briefing. Vincenzo Onorato with his Mascalzone Latino ¬is the leading
champion, three times world champion ,here in Porto Rotondo for the first
time he will sail with the banner YCCS. Nerone, owned by Massimo
Mezzaroma with Antonio Sodo Migliori at the helm and Vasco Vascotto as
tactic planner, is back from the victory in the Acura Miami Sailing Prix.
The challenge will be between them, the Germans of the Aleph of Hughes
Lepic, the Ukraine Arctur of Vasyl Gureyev, the British Hooligan VI of
Edward Broadway, the Swiss Vanitas Cube of Martin Strobel, the American
Flash Gordon of Helmut Jahn, the Italians Calvi Network of Carlo Alberini
with Gabriele Benussi as tactic planner, Enfant Terrible of Alberto Rossi,
TWT of Marco Rodolfi with Tiziano Nava as tactic planner and, Fiamma
of Alessandro Barnaba. In one paragraph there is all the European fleet
of the Farr 40. The stage in Porto Rotondo plans a maximum of 8 trials and
a minimum of 4 to validate the series. The atmosphere is simple and pleasant,
the Clubhouse opens up to the guests with that discrete charm which
is habitual: super elegant.
The first day of the challenge 2 trials are done and it is Mascalzone Latino
who dominates them both, and it leads the ranking. The light winds have
caused the crews to work on the tactics, and luck hasn’t blessed everyone.
The following days the winds are a bit tensed, and 3 trials are run. Leading
the fleet are the “usual ones” alternating themselves, Nerone, Fiamma, Mascalzone,
Calvi, but also Flash Gordon does a nice trial. The games are still
to be played, tomorrow we will see. The next day rather the total lack of
wind messes up the cards. At noon, it ends up that nothing is done after a
unsuccessful effort of bringing the ships out. The Principal Race Office,
Eckhart Reincke, could do nothing else but cancel the trial after having
waited for one hour in vain. Validated therefore the results of the day before.
It is Alessandro Barnaba on Fiamma, with the banner of the Yacht Club
Cortina d’Ampezzo, to win the title of this first stage of the Circuit.

DELL’ARTE
Legno, vetro, marmo, granito, aria, terra e fuoco, sole e vento.
Innegabile. Piega, plasma, incastra, doma i materiali,
dici? No sarà una meraviglia, lo so già”.
tra legni e pietra. Sopra, il posizionamento della deposizione lignea
appena “illuminata” da una particolare tecnica pittorica
SAILING IN PORTOROTONDO/49
Marina Lodi e realizzata dall’ingegnere Pietro Palladino
anni Cinquanta a Roma.
concretamente bella, paurosamente bella.
“Adesso no, non ho tempo”.
comporre, anno dopo anno.
dell’artista abruzzese Mario Ceroli. Nell’estate 2008 per
l’inaugurazione della Torre Campanaria erano accorsi Silvio Berlusconi,
Carlo De Benedetti, Franco Carraro, Marta Marzotto e Krizia.
SAILING IN PORTOROTONDO/53
A casa Donà,
come papa Giovanni Paolo II.
alcune colonne in granito.
l’incisione per sant’Andrea col pensiero rivolto all’artista Andrea Cascella.
Sogni
fino a notte fonda.
in progress.
SAILING IN PORTOROTONDO/67
in risalto.
secolari e sottolinea simbolicamente un inno alla vita e alla sua continuità;
and hydrographical emergencies have been individuated and
they have brought back to the surface some great zoomorphic monolithic
granites; the plants have been chosen not only considering the at-
tractiveness of their flowers, but also their capacity of adapting themselves
to the climatic conditions. Nature has been guided and interpreted
with great skills, the vegetation has not only been planned to create
the enthusiasm of the redemption of an antique landscape has guided
In the heart of the park the most sumptuous and surprising architectural
pole: the Agorà. A polyvalent structure in which the best examples
of ancient traditions and classic culture have a new life. It is in fact made
of three main nuclei with a circular motif, the theatre and the tower,
are harmoniously connected and built with traditional materials like local
stones and granite. Lines and shapes are rigorous, clean and light in
order not to weight down the whole structure which proposes a style
that aims to convince and not to surprise. The theatre inside the Agora
represents the “social” fulcrum of the park. Created following the parameters
of the classic theatres, and it can in fact carry out all the functions
being perfectly adequate not only for artistic representations, but
also for conferences, concerts and shows. The greatness of art has a rebirth
not only in this architectural piece of work, but also in the sublime
creativity of artists like Alba Gonzales and Pietro Cascella, Willem
Lenssinich and Pinuccio Sciola, Simon Benetton and Josepha.
sull’Oceano Atlantico.
Panerai in edizione limitata e tiratura unica.
Newport, a giugno.
Identico compleanno festeggerà La Spina, 12 me-
THE ELEGANCE OF TRADITION
The fifth anniversary of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge also passes
through Porto Rotondo. It seems like the circuit has existed forever,
so well has the Florentine house combined its name with style and
with the history and culture of vintage boats. But no, it has really “only”
been five years since the excellent intuition of Angelo Bonati and of his Officine
Panerai gave life to what is today one of the most accredited circuits
in the seas of all the world, for vintage boats, in the name of common values
related to the sea, to beauty, to history and to ancient trades.
Also in 2009 the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge will reach some of the
most prestigious localities of the yachting sport facing the Mediterranean
and the Atlantic Ocean. From April to September, the Circuit unwinds
passing through three stages in the Mediterranean (Antibes and Cannes
on the Côte d’Azur, and Porto Rotondo in Sardinia) and four overseas
(Antigua to Caribbean, Nantucket and a double appointment in Newport,
along the Eastern coast of the USA: one in June and one in September).
Counting both the stages in the Mediterranean and the American
ones, in 2009 about 350 beautiful “ladies of the sea” are expected to
take part in the Circuit. The overall winners of each stage, in the two categories
in which the fleet will be divided (“vintage” boats, that is those
built before 1950, and Classic boats, built between 1950 and 1975), will
be awarded a watch especially created by Officine Panerai in limited edition
and single print run.
The Sardinian stage of the Circuit, “Vele d’Epoca a Porto Rotondo”,
planned for the 10th -13th of September, will be one more occasion to
dream while watching antique wood and perfectly shined brass. It is the
third time that Panerai sponsors the vintage sails regattas in Sardinia, on
uneven years and alternately with the regattas in Imperia.
At the moment when we go into print the appointments at Antigua, in
April, and those at Antibes and Newport, in June, have already taken
place. Bona Fide, Ilhabela II, Rowdy, Velsheda, to quote only a few, have
conquered the first places: on all the seas of the world. Because this
is exactly one of the characteristics which animates the group of shipowners
who take part in the Panerai appointments, one or all, it’s not
important: feeling part of a big family, and sharing the pride and the
passion for your own “wood”. The shipowner of a vintage boat follows a
philosophy constituted by silences and caresses on the water, by fawn
sails which open with the wind, and by time, a lot of time, spent reconstructing
the history of his own boat. This does not obstruct the
sport spirit: a healthy competitive spirit can still be felt on the quay at
every event, and naturally also around the marks. Every turn around the
yellow mark is a spectacle.
The 2009 fleet is made up of Auric shooners, Bermuda ketches, yawls,
sloops, cutters: these are only some of the types of sail’s crews which the
Panerai Classic Yachts Challenges line up on the starting line. More than
ninety per cent of these hulls are built in wood with the technique of traditional
planking, and in the past two decades almost all have undergone
important restorations, without which they would not have been able
to go on sailing.
In Porto Rotondo in September have confirmed their presence Vistona, of
the Borea d’Olmo and the “spirit of tradition” Talisman; at the moment
we are going to press it’s not certain but possible the participation of the
historic 23 meter Stormvogel, a spectacular 23 meter from 1961, which
84/SAILING IN PORTOROTONDO
was the set of the film “Dead calm” starring a very young Nicole Kidman.
Among the giants, the eyes will be pointed at Zaca, Auric shooner of more
than 40 meters, which this year celebrates its 80 years since the launch.
For years, Zaca was the floating home of Hollywood star Errol Flynn
and hosted Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth on the occasion of the filming
of “The Lady from Shanghai”. The same birthday will be celebrated
by La Spina, a 12 meter international skiff at its second season in the circuit
of vintage sails regattas.
Inscriptions for the Sardinian stage of the Panerai circuit are not closed
yet: the hope is to be able to dream in front of Varuna and Tuiga, which
this very year turn 100 years old, and in front of the so-called “ottocentesche”:
boats built two centuries ago, like the 13 meter Bona Fide from
1899 and the 33 meter Auric ketch Black Swan, launched in the same
year. Among those who cannot avoid participating in the circuit is the
Auric ketch Tirrenia II from 1914: shipowner Gianni Loffredo, who is
the President of A.I.V.E. (Associazione Italiana Vele d’Epoca).
EILEAN TORNERÀ A NAVIGARE
fu costruita come Ocean Cruiser e conta ben 36 traversate atlantiche.
causò seri danni all’imbarcazione. Amorevolmente e cocciutamente restaurata
John Shearer.
EILEAN WILL NAVIGATE AGAIN
The passion and the effort of the Officine Panerai to preserve and spread
the vintage boat culture are at the base of the purchase of Eilean, a Bermudian
ketch of 22 meters built in 1936 (the same year of the first Panarai
watch) by the Fife, a legendary Scottish shipyard. The shipyard, located close
to Glasgow, has been passed on from generation to generation to the eldest
sons of the family, all called William Fife, in a century of activity between the
1800’s and the 1900’s it has produced some of the most prestigious sailing
boats of the world. Eilean was discovered in 2007 in Antigua, in semi-abandoned
conditions, it has then been recuperated and currently it is in the “Francesco
Del Carlo” shipyard in Viareggio. The conservative and physiological restoration
is almost terminated allowing it to cruise again next year, and participate
to the next editions of the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge. Once the
restoration was completed Eilean will have the right to enter the big family of
the still navigating Fife boats in defiance of it not emblazoned origins. This
old “sea lady” was not conceived as a purebred for regattas, but it was built as
an Ocean Cruiser and it counts at least 36 Atlantic Cruises. It remains a tangible
witness of the immense production of the Scottish shipyard and it testifies
the quality of their creations. In 1937 it touched the sea for the first time,
Eilean, whose name means “small island”. The boat was project number 822
of William Fife III, at the time an eighty year old man, assisted for the occasion
by his nephew Robert Balderton Fife. On the Lloyds register of 1938 the
dimensions of the boat were registered, the sail’s crew was Bermudian ketch,
which has remained unchanged until nowadays, the presence of a paraffin 4
cylinder engine and the sails made by the sail loft Ratsey located on the Wight
Island. The first owners of Eilean were James and Robert Fulton from
Greenock, members of the Royal Gourock Yacht Club. The two brothers
were not participants of the regattas, and therefore they made a boat with an
exclusive private use, without subscribing it to some important regattas,
different to what was done with the twin boat Latifa, also launched in 1936,
which participated to some important regattas like the Fastnet. Fate made
the two brothers use the boat for only two years. Then during the war they
were pilots and were killed. There have been many different handovers of
propriety some of which can hardly be identified. What is certain is that the
boat found itself at a certain point– we are in the mid-70’s – in the Caribbean,
before in St. Thomas and then in Antigua. At the time the boat was
bought by a British architect, John Shearer, who had seen it as a child and
did not hesitate when he had the chance to elect it as his home and made
it one of the most elegant boats of the Caribbean. In 1982 Eilean was used
by the Duran Duran, the music band with the rock star Simon Le Bon, for
the video clip of their song “Rio”, and the charters image traveled around
the world. Fate is always in alert, and during a crossing from the Caribbean
to Europe a bad accident caused serious damage to the boat. Lovingly and
stubbornly Shearer restored it in the original manner, but for sure it was
wearing out for the idealist architect, alone and with no cash money necessary
for the expensive restoration. Then Eilean has finally been purchased
in 2007 by the Officine Panerai. Soon it will start a new life, the long time
wished re-birth, unfortunately only dreamt for more then 20 years by
the sailor and architect John Shearer.
sue piccole dimensioni (lunghezza mt. 2,30, larghezza mt. 1,13),
Golfo Aranci e San Pantaleo.
In tutta tranquillità, divertendosi e imparando a gestire paure, emozioni
THE SEA SAILING SCHOOL TURNS 10 YEARS OLD
T he Yacht Club Porto Rotondo, in collaboration with the City Hall of Olbia,
the city’s and nearby towns elementary schools, has organized in the
last months the first spring session of the project “Scuola Mare Vela”, which
has reached its10th edition this year.
Thanks to this initiative, started in 1999, the Club offers the possibility to
the students of Olbia’s elementary schools to take advantage of a safe and
healthy introduction to Sailing. In the months which are not considered
summer, the mild climate, the clean waters, the preparation of the instructors
and the availability of the adequate structures allow the children to get
closer to this sport. The type of boat used for the practical lessons is the Optimist.
An ideal school-boat, diffused all around the world and adequate for
children who range from 6 to 14 years old. Despite the small dimensions
(length 2.30 m, width 1.13 m ), the Optimist is a safe boat, which sails
well also with strong winds and heavy loads. In addition to the courses of
Summer Sailing School, the trainer of the courses, Laura Decandia, helped
by the Apprentice Instructor Eugenio Basciu, in addition to the Club’s
Agonistic Team ( Optimist and 420 Categories) follows this important
project which brings many children to live the sea in different moments
compared to the usual period of the summer vacations. Laura Decandia is a
II level Instructor, who is working starting from this year for “Yachting in
Sardinia” a company with which our club collaborates and which is managed
by Francesco Della Torre, athlete, and Club Advisor, soon active in
“Mediterranean Games”. In the 2009 spring season 100 boys and girls
between 6 and 12 years of age coming from the elementary schools of Santa
Maria-Isticadeddu (the majority), Via Nanni - Poltu Cuadu, Via Vignola,
Rudalza, Golfo Aranci and San Pantaleo, have partecipated to the courses
“Scuola Mare Vela”. In complete tranquility, enjoying there time, learning
and managing their fears, their emotions and the small unplanned
events of every cruise, the children have acquired a good confidence with
the sea element. At the end of the course party, which was held on Sunday
the 7th of June, the great satisfaction of the parents and instructors has
been the decision, taken by a small group of participants to continue their
sailing adventure by participate to the pre-agonistic courses.
gestione dell’imbarcazione. Nonchè fonte di divertimento e
di nuove amicizie
Every lesson is a meeting occasion, a growth experience and a
