POESIA FATTA A MANO

“Poesia fatta a mano” nasce con l’obiettivo di rappresentare artisticamente
un’idea straordinaria della ricerca fondamentale, che influenzerà
le nostre vite al pari, o forse più, del web. Si tratta della
Grid, una rete planetaria di calcolo che consente di analizzare i miliardi
di gigabyte di dati prodotti dall’esperimento Lhc, al Cern di Ginevra,
ma anche di fare previsioni climatiche, economiche e di
elaborare informazioni con la potenza di migliaia di calcolatori.
L’artista trae spunto dalla poesia combinatoria, interpretando liberamente
il testo “100 mila miliardi di poesie” dello scrittore francese
Raymond Queneau. L’opera di Queneau ha una struttura che permette
di creare poesie partendo da una base di 10 sonetti e combinando
liberamente le singole frasi. In questo modo è possibile
realizzare fino a 100 mila miliardi di sonetti diversi, affidando al
lettore la realizzazione stessa del testo finale e la sua rigenerazione
continua.
Un elemento peculiare dell’installazione interattiva Poesia fatta a
mano - che la distingue dall’idea originaria di Queneau - è la necessità
della cooperazione tra soggetti distribuiti nello spazio: una
caratteristica fondamentale anche della rete di calcolo Grid. La composizione
dell’opera poetica non è infatti possibile senza l’intervento
di più partecipanti, che dovranno coordinare la loro azione per ascoltare
lo svilupparsi della poesia, frase dopo frase.
Come una rete di elaborazione di informazioni diverse, originate in
punti distribuiti nello spazio, l’installazione produce un risultato unitario,
la poesia, che segue e dipende dall’azione collettiva e coordinata dei
singoli elaboratori. In modo analogo, la Grid collega 350 centri di calcolo
distribuiti in 50 paesi sviluppando una potenza di calcolo pari a
quella di 280.000 computer.

“Handmade poetry” was inspired by the goal of artistically
representing an extraordinary idea of fundamental research that
will influence our lives as much as, or perhaps more than the
web. This is the Grid, a planetary computer network that allows
analyzing the millions of gigabytes of data produced by the Lhc
experiment at the CERN in Geneva, but also to provide
climatic and economic forecasts and to create information
with the power of thousands of calculators.
The artist begins with interactive poetry, freely interpreting
the text “100 thousand billion poems” of French writer Raymond
Queneau. The structure of the work allows creating poetry
beginning with a base of 10 sonnets and freely combining the
individual phrases. In this way, it is possible to create up to
100 thousand billion different sonnets, entrusting to the reader
the execution of the final text and its continuous regeneration.
A special element of the installation Handmade poetry that
distinguishes it from Queneau’s original idea is the need for
cooperation between subjects distributed in space: also a
fundamental characteristic of the Grid computer network. The
composition of the poetic work, in fact, is not possible without
the intervention of several participants, who must coordinate
their actions to hear the development of the poetry, one
phrase after another.
Like a network bringing together various pieces of information,
originating from points distributed in space, the installation
produces a unified result, poetry, which follows and depends on
the collective and coordinated actions of the individual creators.
In a similar way, the Grid collects 350 computer centers
distributed in 50 countries, developing computer power equal
to that of 280,000 computers.
