Apocalypse suits
you!
Sergio Padovani and the
Circus of Earthly Delights
by Viviana Siviero
Lost Paradises are unknown,. Those who went there never came back, or
at least never talked about them. We have no certainties, only images, in
most cases fantasies, rarely prophecies. There are eyes that see places
otherwise ignored, inhabited by nymphs, sylphs, pygmies, salamanders
and other beings 1 which reveal themselves in their own diversity like magic
expressions, in any case abandoning rules. Children have have the gift of
sight; artists keep it and learn the art of showing it: the materialize it into
sound, into matter or hold on to some other ways of expression, creating,
each time a little Apocalypse.
Chapter 1: Beyond the looking glass, past the door and to other nowheres
2
Practice and poetry
Beyond the looking glass, past the door to other nowhere, where you may
often meet the Apocalypse.
In general belief, Apocalypse is something that follows history and precedes
nothingness, this is why it fits so many people: it is dark, making you
look thinner and it goes with everything. Apocalypse suits you especially
if interpreted in the right way, like Death in tarots. It symbolizes the end of
a cycle and announces the beginning of a new one. Sergio Padovani puts
on a horror show pleasantly, through his construction of freakish bodies
full of hermaphrodite stitching, falling skins that move along the border of
gender and age, in a space without space where hours come one after the
other and exist for themselves and not as a perpetual repetition of twentyfour.
His artistic practice, researched with a capable paintbrush, raises the
curtain that hides reality for every new work, revealing people made insecure
by their myopic banality, a court of fools collected around their own
deformed differences.
It would be easy to talk about excluded souls forced to live in a type of
“underworld”, a parallel and reassuring reality, where abnormality becomes
a rule merely because shared by most. It would be banal to talk about their
desire – which anyway seems palpable among so many obscure brush
strokes – to be accepted by those who radically follow the rules of shape
and essence. And only for the will of fate. The canvas, with its wooden
frame, defines a comparing space; the frame opens up like a window upon
a more complex reality which demands that we not look away.
In Padovani’s works there is an alternative and so much truer Wonderland;
the artist, like a solicitous White Rabbit, shows us the way to reach the
Queen of Heart’s unavoidable castle, representing the danger of comparison
and experience.
Cap. 2: Because I am someone else. If copper wakes up being a trumpet,
it has no fault 3
The characters
Arthur Rimbaud wrote: «Because I am someone else. If copper wakes up
being a trumpet, it has no fault. It seems obvious to me: I watch the blossoming
of my thought,: I look at it, I listen to it, I play the bow: the symphony
is deeply moved or it jumps out into the scene. 4 » in the same way,
Sergio Padovani does not feel the evoked characters to be his children. On
the contrary: he feels he is them. The features that spring from his skilful
paintbrush are the complex result of an idea generated by a combination
of deeds and frustrations, moments observed fleetingly and registered on
a subconscious and retinal level, later elaborated beginning with the artwork’s
punctum.
This detail, which makes the artwork intelligible and coincides with the
access point to the parallel universe, is what the eye must look for this
artist’s work: it is not necessarily a domineering element, or a predictable
.detail displayed by the main character. It is instead a delicate detail, like a
drop, a dress, a line or a jewel box, ready to declare itself to the spectator
without arrogance and to control his vision and his judgment in a subtle
and invisible way.
The figures chosen by Padovani as the main characters in the tale have feelings
they are afraid to feel. The artist seems to turn to them with a mix of
conflicting emotions: from love to melancholy sadness, from compassion
to uncontrolled happiness. He chooses not to paint a face or a body he has
experienced, but rather the carnal objectification of a deep and pressing
feeling that slowly emerges from the shade; he carries it out by means of
a paintbrush that strives primarily to keep alive the same emotion he felt
L’Apocalisse
dona!
ti
Sergio Padovani mette in scena uno
I personaggi
punto d’accesso all’universo parallelo è ciò che l’occhio deve ricercare
at the moment of discovery. If all these charming cannonball women, jelly
little girls, oyster-boys, BFGs (Big Friendly Giants) Big Fishes, and all the
other bi-tonal marvelous circus freaks could express themselves through
sound, we would not hear agonizing screams or painful crying, but rather
shy whispers and discrete whimpering fluttering in a pure snow-like silence.
A delicate sound emitted while holding their breath with their heart
threatening to explode: their eyes focus on a point beyond the picture, they
look at the spectator begging him to understand and to stop the growth of
that sense of inadequacy’ which is so terribly cruel that nobody should
have to feel it.
Chapter 3: I asked: “what terrifies you most about purity?”. William
answered: “Hurry” 5 .
Time
White, Black, Payne’s Grey and Bitumen are Sergio Padovani’s four knights
of the Apocalypse. He does not execute his works starting with pencil studies
or photographic images: the idea is born in his mind from a set of experiences
which pile up as through the spout of a funnel. At a certain point
the soul becomes saturated with all these ever-changing affairs and the
nucleus of the work– the punctum – is spat out a detail around which, later,
the painting is made. From that moment on, the artist simply highlights
the event, positioning shadowy masses to bring out the brighter parts. Padovani
is not far from being a good light engineer busy with an important
theatrical piece: black flowing from the paintbrush functions as a marker
for the light and shows characters otherwise invisible. He continues doing
so until the painting declares its own completion, leaving its creator free to
follow a new emotion. Everything takes place at the right hurried pace, it
reveals itself in an open and obsessive timeframe where hours lose their
value both for the creature and for its creator. The fundamental principle revolves
around the need to follow an unconscious and unpredictable energy
which seems to establish a direct communication between the mind and
the painting.
Chapter 4: (Ab)normal life
The shot
That thin line which separates a normal from an abnormal existence may
consist of the elementary embrace of two parentheses, both in literary and
in real life. These are the defining rules that constitute the morphology of
what is acceptable and what is scary. Sergio Padovani organizes his brushworks
variegating the color scale from black to obscure, passing through
a grey made of faint, dense and bright matter. He does not want to impose
diversity on us, he rather carries out an extreme act of integration: by not
protecting his multi-sexed and deformed characters from comparison, forcing
his traumatic dolls to dance on some sort of stage, decadent despite
itself and framed by the canvas, he obliges the observer to watch and the
subject to show itself. Thus the two entities relate reciprocally, holding a
dialogue that would never have occurred otherwise. A gang of unbalanced
forms, anxious to be discovered, they come out of the dark wishing to free
themselves from the destiny which seems to have been chosen for them.
Although they are awkward, they cannot help but move; their eyes like eggs
bleached by hot water, eyes begging you to be eaten, to make the love empathy
total, and to be able to see the world from a different point of view…
Chapter 5: When hours become short and shadows betray the eye
The setting
“When hours become short and shadows betray the eye, one might sense
a different world” 7 . The landscape, familiar as it might seem, disappears
and transforms itself, becoming unrecognizable: by not putting fearful limitations
on it, it is sufficient to feel it as your own home. In shining light,
everyone who lives in this underworld may look isolated but appearances
can be deceptive: Sergio Padovani and his capable paintbrush surprise
those who “listen” to them. The leading color seems to be black but do
not be deceived by quantity: the main character is white, revealed through
the absence of color but intended as light, therefore the sum of all colors.
Its intangibility makes its opposite, shade, necessary and shadows back
up the leading character to let light and all its essential parts show its own
strength The same might be said about the absence of settings, clouded
by a background that destroys every detail: the artist seems more interested
in giving a general interpretation to details rather than colors. Many
influences can be found in Padovani’s work: the long shadows of German
movie expressionism, the warm contrast in silent movies of the 1920s
when music was played live by the orchestra in the theater, 1940’s aesthetics,
experiences lived indirectly through history books, Dutch painting
and the dark worlds described in certain children’s stories which fascinate
adults first of all. But most of all, music.
Chapter 6: While I was dreaming, I had a vision of mystery in the sky
The technique
That wich Odilon Redon declared by titling a famous work seems to be
true for Sergio Padovani as well: he started his artistic career as a music
affascinanti donne cannone, bambine disciolte, bambini ostrica, GGG
Cap. 4: (Ab)normal life
L’inquadratura
In piena luce tutti coloro
composer, and only later came to painting. Painting is a complete tool: like
a piano, it requires no accompaniment. A few gestures offer an immediate
and complete vision. Sergio Padovani, dream after dream, opened his restless
windows onto an oneiric universe that had to be preserved, lighting
the extraordinary circus revealed through a process of more important than
final result itself. The process of titling painting completes the artwork,
imposing for the first time the artist’s point of view on the vision. As in
music, where “color” is given by melody which is the pictorial matter, while
lyrics, completed by rhythm and pitches, are like a title made of words
picked up among poetic but often desecrating sentences, as if it were a
new character.
Chapter 7: Eraserhead
The results
The mind has a process by which the most painful memories are sunk into
oblivion. This is the Apocalypse liable to be ours: the erasure of extraordinary
and prodigiously horrifying characters, which after being forgotten,
like gods, could hereafter close the doors that console them. David Lynch,
like Sergio Padovani, is a painter, a musician and a composer, besides
being a famous movie director, known for his visionary, oneiric and anguished
audio-connected pictures. In 1971 he made one of his first masterpieces:
Eraserhead, in which a quiet young man who lives with his fiancée
in a desolate industrial suburb, becomes the father of a mutant child. Lynch
never wanted to speak about the baby but the story tells that an embalmed
cow fetus was used to make it. Some say that Stanley Kubrick showed
Eraserhead during the shooting of Shining, just to trouble the actors. Sometimes
it is only a matter of form or suggestion but we must look for essence.
Sergio Padovani and his painting want us to accompany them into that
underground wonderland where, despite dark appearances, we are unlikely
to be maltreated. Let us accept the Apocalypse when it manifests itself, let
us open up to changes: we cannot know what will happen but maybe what
we call nothing is just our own fear. And we have to face and beat it.
pochi gesti offrono uno spettro immediato e compiuto. Sergio Padovani,
Conclusioni
lives and works in Modena.
He started his artistic career as a musician,
perceptions into images.
His research lays its foundations on the
body and on its physical and moral inadequacy.
Its motionless and grotesque
revealing to human curiosity.
The narration of inexplicable researches
on corporeity, on its miseries and yet its
beauty, always and anyway.
The demanding of imperfection and its
self-satisfied purity.
Nato a Modena il 25 Aprile 1972, dove
vive e lavora .
Inizia la sua carriera artistica come musicista,
per trasformare le proprie ispirazioni
sonore in percezioni visive.
La sua ricerca ha fondamento nel corpo
e nell’inadeguatezza fisica e morale. Il
grottesco, immobile, rivelarsi al giudizio
dell’umana curiosità.
La narrazione dell’inesplicabile indagine
sulla corporeità, delle sue miserie e
della sua bellezza, sempre e comunque.
La rivendicazione dell’imperfezione e
della sua autocompiaciuta purezza.
