molto più pesanti dell’inizialmente previsto, comportando l’inagibilità dell’intera palazzina 1, prima totale e poi
parziale.
Fabiola Mascardi, Andrea Del Chicca
IIn late January a fire broke out at the Ansaldo Energia site. Despite the fact that it did not spread far, and was skilfully
contained and put out by the fire service, it had much more serious consequences that was initially thought,
leaving building 1 at first totally unfit for use, and then partially.
In these difficult circumstances, all the company's human resources revealed their flexibility and determination, in a
'concrete' demonstration of the team spirit and pride that are distinctive features of our Company, and of the sense of
true belonging which is never a word used lightly by the people who work for Ansaldo.
The solidarity and affection that unite all our company's employees were also confirmed in this brief period since the
start of the year by the sad death of our colleague Maurizio while at work in the company's offices. As well as touching
us all as human beings, this episode once again confirms the values which drive the efforts of all Ansaldo Energia's
human resources.
ABBIAMO DECISO
DI CRESCERE...
QUINDI CRESCIAMO
WE HAVE DECIDED
TO GROW...
SO LET'S GROW
> Di/By Giuseppe Zampini
Ansaldo Energia negli anni ha consolidato
il suo nome e la sua reputazione
a livello internazionale nel campo
dell’energia. Credo che, oltre alle competenze
tecniche necessarie per i nostri prodotti
altamente tecnologici, Ansaldo Energia
impianti, macchine, service e nuclea-
Over the years Ansaldo Energia has
consolidated its name and reputation
on international energy markets.
I believe that over and above the technical
skills needed for our advanced technology
products, Ansaldo Energia can draw
on a distinctive characteristic to support
the company’s growth: the value we give
our Customers. The technical assistance
skills and availability shown over the years
by our human resources have become the
recognised values of Ansaldo Energia, consolidating
the market’s confidence in our
company. There is no doubt that continuing
to train and motivate our personnel to
adopt this approach is our main goal.
Financial 2008 produced the best economic
and financial results in the past decade.
Ansaldo Energia reported ongoing production
volume growth in all the main business
areas: plant, machinery, services and
nuclear. The new orders total was exceptionally
good at over Euro 2 billion.
Revenue growth did not sacrifice profitability,
which remained at the same level as in
re.
In
un momento internazionale segnato da
una profonda crisi finanziaria ed economica
Ansaldo Energia mantiene un elevato livello
di portafoglio ordini ed una significativa liquidità,
che possono consentire di meglio
affrontare momenti di difficoltà che probabilmente
verranno.
profondamente mutato. Riteniamo di sì. I
risentire in maniera significativa
mettendo a punto.
reserve capacity for three years, the period
of time after which we can reasonably expect
the negative world situation to turn
around.
So far as concerns business areas, we believe
that service activities will increase
their contribution to revenue still further.
Prospects in the nuclear sector are also
good, but we can do more as regards the
plan to decommission Italian power stations,
which could get under way immediately,
and also in connection with the plan
being drawn up by the Government, and
Minister Scajola in particular. At stake is relaunching
system Italy based on this technology,
something which cannot be
achieved without aggregating existing
forces. But the relaunch is also necessary to
support companies like Ansaldo Energia,
which makes an important contribution to
the local economy and has remained and
flourished as a Genoa-based enterprise
after possible sale in 1998 to Daewoo.
2007 and is excellent when compared to
our benchmarks. In an international scenario
characterised by the profound financial
and economic crisis, Ansaldo Energia
has a large order backlog and good liquidity,
which will put it in a good position to
negotiate the moments of difficulty that
inevitably lie ahead.
The world power market is still underpinned
by a decresing demand.
What we must now ask ourselves is
whether or not these growth forecasts, formulated
last year, can still be achieved
given the profoundly different international
scenario in which we are now operating.
We believe that they can. The countries
with which we are working today should
not be significantly affected by the crisis.
Analysis reveals that these countries have

the «Francesco Manzitti»
award
I
l 2008 si è chiuso con due importanti
riconoscimenti per Ansaldo Energia.
L’Amministratore Delegato Giuseppe
Zampini è stato eletto nel Consiglio
Esecutivo di Confindustria Genova,
associazione che riunisce 1.130 imprese
genovesi, diventandone Vice Presidente
con delega all’innovazione tecnologica,
industria. Zampini entra così nella
squadra di Giovanni Calvini – trentottenne
amministratore delegato di
Madi Ventura, azienda leader a livello
all’economista Paolo Savona, professore emerito di Politica Economica, presidente
2
008 closed with two important
acknowledgements for Ansaldo
Energia. Managing Director
Giuseppe Zampini was elected to the
Executive Council of the Genoa section
of Confindustria (the confederation
of Italian industry), which brings
together 1,130 Genoese companies,
becoming Vice Chairman with responsibility
for technological innovation
and relations with universities,
research centres and industry. Zampini
joins the team put together by Giovanni
Calvini - the thirty-eight year
old managing director of Madi Ventura,
a leading Italian dried fruit importer
and trader - who was elected chairman of Confidustria with 93 percent
of votes.
With them the General Meeting also appointed the four vice chairmen who will
work with the Confindustria chief executive. These new members of the team
put together by the youngest chairman in the history of the association are
Luigi Attanasio, a past president and owner of Spiga Nord, with responsibility
for relations with the Confederation, Francesco Berti Riboli, CEO of the Montallegro
Clinic, with responsibility for implementing an ambitious organisation structure
reform programme, and Giovanni Dellepiane, the CEO of Rimorchiatori Riuniti
and Confindustria representative on the Port Committee, to whom Calvini
assigned responsibility for the port.
Zampini also received the «Francesco Manzitti» award (named after the former
chairman of Genoa Chamber of Commerce) from «International Economics»
journal as best economic internalisation processes manager. The award was
presented at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the journal, which is published
by the International Economics Institute, a Genoa Chamber of Commerce
research body, with Minister Claudio Scajola and Local Authorities in attendance.
At the same event the journal awarded its International Economics Award to
economist Paolo Savona, professor emeritus of Economic Policy,
UniCredit/Banca di Roma Chairman, and a former Minister of Industry in the
Ciampi government.
In his acceptance speech, Zampini told the packed audience of businessmen,
economists and institutional figures from Liguria, about the recent economic
history of Ansaldo Energia. Savona questioned the failure of markets and capitalism,
offering a personal and not totally pessimistic view. Both received an Albisola
ceramics bas relief inspired by the event’s crest, created to mark the occasion
by Raimondo Sirotti.

Il riconoscimento, recentemente istituito
da Finmeccanica è stato consegnato durante
la Convention 2008 dei Dirigenti che
dal titolo “The New Era” dà un messaggio
Alessandro Fasce, Salvatore Scriva e Duilio
Finmeccanica, Pierfrancesco Guarguaglini,
anche in considerazione della nutritissima
concorrenza delle aziende del gruppo
(Agusta Westland, Ansaldo STS e Oto Melara
The newly established Finmeccanica
award was presented during the recent
Managers Convention, entitled
«The New Era» to give a strong, clear
message that we are entering a new international
business dimension, a goal
that management has been striving to
achieve in recent years with determination:
The New Era also involves ensuring
that, in each sector, the customer’s needs
are the driving force behind the operations
of all companies, hence the Customer
Award.
A great success for the team led by project
manager Emilio Cipollini, Alessandro
Fasce, Salvatore Scrivia and Duilio Ventura,
who accepted the award, accompanied
by Ansaldo Energia management, from
Finmeccanica chairman Pierfrancesco
Guarguaglini, especially in the face of
fierce competition from other group companies
(AgustaWestland, Ansaldo STS and
Oto Melara were the other finalists).
The Rizziconi power station is the result
of activities performed by qualified engiper
anni nell’interesse comune, dalla progettazione,
ai mesi intensi della costruzione e
dell’avviamento dell’impianto.
neers who, while belonging to different
companies, have worked for years together
in the common interest, from design to
the hectic months of construction and
plant start-up.
This proactive collaborative relationship
between the customer, Rizziconi Energia
in Egl Group, and Ansaldo Energia, has delivered
excellent results both in terms of
environmental impact and from an economic
standpoint, making it possible to
achieve time and cost targets, as well as
to make use of technologies that ensure
state-of-the-art production efficiency.
While it took two years to open the worksite
after project approval, in a little more
than 27 months work was complete and
the station was in service and up to
speed.
Not many major infrastructure projects
can boast that they have respected their
timetables: in an often extremely difficult
Italian situation, the Rizziconi power station
represents a happy exception.
The plant represents the state of the art
mento dell’efficienza sia per il contenimento
dell’impatto ambientale.
euro, contratto EPC + contratto GTF (garanzia
in thermoelectric technology as regards
both efficiency and reduction of environmental
impact. Nevertheless, not only
technological skills, but also careful management
led to the success of a project in
which more than Euro 500 million has
been invested (EPC contract + 12-year
total functional guarantee contract), with
a worksite populated every day by up to
800 workers.
The Rizziconi power station is the product
of contributions from a broad range of resources,
efforts and professional skills deployed
successfully during years of design
work and months of construction.

RAFFORZATA NEL 2008 LA
PRESENZA COMMERCIALE
NEL MERCATO ESTERO
COMMERCIAL PRESENCE
ON INTERNATIONAL
MARKETS STRENGTHENED
IN 2008
In particolare, rispetto all’anno precedente, si
importanti centrali a ciclo combinato chiavi in
elettrici italiani in iniziative distribuite in tutto
2008 was another good year for
Ansaldo Energia, confirming the
flattering trend of recent years and
2007 in particular.
New orders were received both in Italy
and from European and extra-EU countries,
confirming and consolidating the
leading role played by the company in
the complex international scenario.
Specifically, our company strengthened
its presence on international markets,
where collaboration was pursued with
major European leaders in the sector including
the Swiss ATEL, which awarded
Ansaldo Energia contracts for the two
important turnkey combined cycle power
stations at Bayet and San Severo, in
France and Italy respectively.
Close ties with Electrabel Group were
also confirmed, with the signing of a
contract for the supply and installation
of a V94.3A gas turbine generating set
for the Dunamenti power station in Hungary.
In the meantime, excellent existing collaboration
relations were maintained
with Italian electric power operators, for
whom projects are under way across the
globe.
Against this backdrop a contract was
signed with Edison Group, a leading Italian
power producer, to supply and erect
two gas and steam turbine sets for the
Thisvi thermoelectric power station in
Greece.
confermata in Belgio, dove la società ha acquisito
l’ordine per la fornitura dei componenti
relativi all’impianto a ciclo combinato di Marcinelle,

Ansaldo Energia intende perseguire queste
Ansaldo Energia also confirmed its presence
in Belgium, where the company has
won orders to supply components for the
Marcinelle combined cycle near
Charleroi, emphasising its special relationship
with ENEL, not only in Italy, but
internationally too.
Of particular interest were the maintenance
of profitable relations with Russian
power producers, as well as the supply
of two gas turbine sets for the open
cycle at Pointe Noire, situated in the city
of the same name in the former French
Congo, underlining Ansaldo Energia’s
presence in this important central
African country, which looks set to host
some major initiatives in the future development
of the global economy.
Finally, 2008 was also important in that
it marked the return of Ansaldo Energia
to Latin America, and to Chile in particular,
where after being awarded new orders
for three steam turbines and relative
generators, Ansaldo Energia now has
contracts to supply the machinery for all
the power projects initiated in the country
during the year.
But Chile isn’t about to stop here. By the
end of 2010 almost all the projects
planned before the current economic crisis
are expected to get under way, or in
other words the construction of additional
coal-fired thermoelectric power
stations with a total output of about 5
GW, for completion by 2013, representing
a 30% increase on the current installed
base.
But the real key to success will be the
quality of our products, the performance
of our machinery and our skill and availability
during the offer and execution
stages, which are the main reasons we
received these new orders in the country
and what our customer, the Korean
POSCO E&C, finds so satisfying, so much
so that it intends to buy our machines
for future projects in Chile too, as well as
in other Latin American countries like
Peru.
The new orders described are for projects
in many countries spread across the
globe, stressing still further the guiding
role played by the Finmeccanica group
company on the world energy stage.

NUOVA ORGANIZZAZIONE PER
L’INNOVAZIONE E SVILUPPO
PRODOTTI
NEW INNOVATION AND
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
ORGANISATION
a vapore ultrasupercritiche, cicli combinati
ad elevata flessibilità), che soprattutto in
quello del service anche sulle macchine di
The most important novelty in the
new Ansaldo Energia organisation
structure introduced on September 1,
2008 is the creation of a General Co-Management
unit specialising in Innovation
and Product Development.
The conclusion of all traditional licensing
agreements relating to the company’s
products, a process begun in 2005, means
that Ansaldo Energia is now totally independent
of its competitors in terms of
technology. The technology independence
programme has also made it possible, over
a period of 4 years, to capitalise know-how
deriving from current products, with particular
reference to gas turbines.
It is nevertheless clear that the Company’s
growth ambitions both in the new plant
sector, where the market is focusing increasing
attention on products with more
advanced performance and environmental
characteristics (enhanced class F or class H
gas turbines, ultrasupercritical steam turbines,
high flexibility combined cycles), and
more importantly in services for propritecnologia
concorrente, richiedono un impegno
sempre maggiore nel campo delle
tecnologie e dello sviluppo prodotti.
e sviluppo (Governance Tecnologica)
Piano Strategico aziendale, pianificando e
commerciale e industriale.
La Direzione “Innovazione e Sviluppo Prodotti”
(PDE) è organizzata in:
di svolgere i progetti di ricerca, sviluppo
CONSEGNATO IL NUOVO
CICLO COMBINATO DELLA
CENTRALE DI MONCALIERI
NEW COMBINED CYCLE
DELIVERED TO MONCALIERI
POWER STATION
> Terminata con successo la seconda fase
del ripotenziamento della centrale cogenerativa
di Moncalieri, in linea con le
tempistiche programmate
> The second stage of repowering at the
Moncalieri go-generation station has
been successfully concluded with the
completion on schedule of work on the
second thermo-electric generating set
This was how the news was put by Turin municipal company
Iride Energia, which commissioned the Moncalieri plant, in
its press release issued on 6 November 2008. The next day,
Turin based “La Stampa” newspaper ran the headline: “Record district
heating in Moncalieri - Iride opens Italy’s largest power station”.
The plant was completed and handed over to the customer by
Ansaldo Energia, the lead company in a temporary grouping, in
just twenty six months as stipulated in the contract schedule, and
delivers better performance than the guaranteed figure, despite
Il 6 novembre 2008 Iride Energia,
la municipalizzata torinese
committente dell’impianto
di Moncalieri annunciava il
termine dei lavori di repowering
dell’impianto, e il giorno successivo,
“La Stampa” di Torino titolava:
“Teleriscaldamento record
a Moncalieri – Iride inaugura la
centrale più grande d’Italia”.
L’impianto è stato realizzato e
consegnato da Ansaldo Energia,
mandataria di un’associazione
temporanea d’imprese, in soli
ventisei mesi, esattamente in accordo
con le tempistiche contrattuali,
e con prestazioni superiori
a quelle garantite, nonostante le
incognite e le enormi difficoltà
soprattutto ad operare e ricondizionare
strutture ed impianti
realizzati negli anni sessanta. La
ferrea programmazione, la competenza
tecnica ed il costante
monitoraggio di ogni singola attività
hanno però consentito il
compimento con successo del
progetto nella sua complessità.
Il contratto prevedeva la realizzazione
‘chiavi in mano’ del ripotenziamento
dell’esistente ciclo
termico convenzionale a vapore
da 141 MW in un moderno ciclo
combinato da 390 MW elettrici,
con modo di funzionamento in
assetto cogenerativo per alimentare
la rete di teleriscaldamento
di Torino.
Unica centrale di questo tipo, il
Gruppo 2 di Moncalieri ha incor-
ANSALDO ENERGIA 22
the unknowns and enormous
difficulties involved in working
on plant built in the 1960s.
Iron-clad planning, technical
expertise and constant monitoring
of each individual activity
underpinned successful project
completion.
Under the terms of the contract,
the existing 141 MW conventional
steam cycle was repowered
on a turnkey basis
into a modern 390 MW combined
cycle, which feeds the
Turin district heating system
when operating in cogeneration
mode.
The only power station of its
type, Unit 2 at Moncalieri can
switch from combined cycle to
conventional cycle operation in
the event of natural gas supply
problems, because the existing
steam generator can burn fuel
oil as an alternative to gas.
The technology used to repower
Unit 2 at Moncalieri into a
combined cycle delivers the
best performance with the
smallest environmental footprint.
The project was supplied
with the first V94.34A class 4
gas turbine built, fitted with a
new combustion system featuring
a partially premixed pilot
configuration called VeLoNox
(Very Low NOx), which has already
been tested on the
V94.3A class 2 gas turbine unit
installed in unit 2 at the Mantova
power station.
With the combined cycle generating
electricity only, the efficiency
measured during official
testing in September 2008 was
premiscelato denominato VeLoNox (Very Low NOx) già
30 mg/Nm3 (15ppm). In assetto cogenerativo, quindi producendo
58.3%, accompanied by NOx
emissions of 25.3 mg/Nm3 (15
ppm). In co-generation mode,
during which it also produces
heat for the Turin city district
heating network, the new combined
cycle achieves efficiency
of 90% “compared with average
efficiency reported by Italian
thermoelectric power stations
of 45%” (source: Iride Energia
press release).
As a result of the high level of
automation, which also extends
to the existing components
incorporated in the new
combined cycle (and the steam
turbine in particular), the plant
can be run by a single operator
from the control room.
All stages of the work performed
on-site – demolition of
the existing structures, construction
of civil works, electromechanical
erection work,
start-up and testing activities –
were performed with a special
focus on the health and safety
of the workforce. Ansaldo Energia
has a history of commitment
to safety, not only as regards
its own work, but also
that of associated companies
and contractors working onsite.
With the delivery of the new
site to Iride Energia on October
7, 2008, the long term maintenance
contract signed concurrently
with the EPC order came
into effect. Under the terms of
this global service contract,
Ansaldo Energia will operate
and perform routine maintenance
and emergency repairs

Ansaldo Energia, come
ormai da tempo, ha posto grande
attenzione al tema della sicurezza,
e questo non solo con riferimento
alle proprie attività, ma
anche alle imprese associate e
agli appaltatori operanti in cantiere.
Con la consegna della centrale a
Iride Energia, avvenuta il 7 ottobre
2008, è entrato in vigore il
contratto di manutenzione a
lungo termine acquisito da Ansaldo
Energia contestualmente
al contratto EPC. Con questo
contratto, di tipo Global Service,
Ansaldo Energia dovrà, con un
impegno di quattordici anni, gestire
ed eseguire la manutenzione
programmata e d’emergenza
on the gas turbine set for fourteen years, undertaking
to guarantee minimum gas turbine generator set performance
degradation and high availability for the entire
duration of the contract. Operating parameters
will also be remotely monitored and logged 24/7 from
the Genoa production facility.
The Moncalieri power station, built on the banks of the
Po river, is Italy’s largest district heating plant and one
of the top three in Europe.
proprio in quell’area sono state installate
oltre cinquanta turbine a gas V94.2, con
alimentazione duale.
ammissibili. La sfida di sviluppare un
Towards the target of zero emissions
Ansaldo Energia adopts a reducing
emissions policy focusing on continuous
projecting and testing activities finalized
to develop new technical solutions to
match the severe energy market requirements
in terms of emissions (NOx and CO 2
,
dust).
Among the several countries Ansaldo Ener-
prodotto conforme ai requisiti di emissioni,
mantenendo contemporaneamente prestazioni
gas a doppia alimentazione, Ansaldo Energia

POWER GENERATION NEWS 1/2009
gia has oriented its business on, Middle
East holds a remarkable importance since
over fifty V94.2 dual fuel gas turbines have
been installed around this area. Though, on
one hand, the V94.2 gas turbines request
in Middle East is considerable, on the other
hand governments’ policies about emissions
reduction have cut the admissible
emissions levels in the last few years. The
challenge to develop a product matching
the required emissions and keeping, at the
same time, high performances becomes
even harder considering that the majority
of the gas turbines to install in Middle East
are required to be operated firing fuel oil.
On the basis of its own experience on dual
fuel gas turbines, Ansaldo Energia has continuously
upgraded its V94.2 gas turbines
with the results the new V94.2 in fuel oil
premix configuration.
The new upgrade on V94.2 gas turbine,
mentare l’omogeneità della stessa, dando
luogo a emissioni contenute ed elevate
prestazioni.
a Barka, in Oman.
unità a ciclo aperto. Al termine dei test PG,
i risultati si sono rivelati stupefacenti:
emissioni, prestazioni e affidabilità dei sistemi
di controllo erano conformi alle
aspettative, mostrando contemporaneamente
nuovi percorsi da seguire per ulteriori
miglioramenti.
produzione energetica.
Gli ottimi risultati ottenuti a Barka consentono
ad Ansaldo Energia di consolidare le
proprie attività e la competitività nei rapporti
con i maggiori fornitori di energia
elettrica del Medio Oriente.
which has involved all Ansaldo Energia Gas
Turbine department, concerns the development
of a new premix combustion mode
when the gas turbine is firing fuel oil. In
comparison to a diffusive flame, a premixed
flame is characterized by a turbulent
mixing process between air and fuel prior
injecting the mixture inside the combustion
chamber. This mixing process allows
the flame’s temperature to be reduced and
flame homogeneity to be increased with
the result of contained emissions and high
performances.
The new fuel oil premix configuration has
been for the first time applied and tested
on three V94.2 dual fuel gas turbines installed
in Barka, Oman. The turbulent mixing
process, typical of the premix flame,
implies a very carefull activity of on-site
tuning in order to give the flame the proper
stability required for extended gas turbine
operation.
The commissioning activities begun on
February 2008 and Ansaldo Energia specialists
cooperated with the client, Doosan
Heavy Industries, with the role of technical
field advisors.
Between June and July 2008 the PG tests
were carried out successfully on all three
units in open cycle. The results at the completion
of PG tests were outstanding: emissions,
performances and control system’s
reliability were in compliance with the expectations,
showing, at the same time,
new paths to follow for further improvements.
At the end of July 2008, within the scheduled
program, the PAC for the open cycle
was signed and the plant was handed over
for the early power operation.
The optimum results achieved in Barka
allow Ansaldo Energia to consolidate its
business and competitiveness in the relations
with the strongest Middle East energy
suppliers.

OMAN, TERRE DI
LEGGENDE, MITI
E SULTANI
OMAN, LAND OF
LEGENDS,
MYTHS AND
SULTANS
Noto da tempo come
paese schivo tanto da
essersi guadagnato l’appellativo
di “eremita del Medio
Oriente”, il Sultanato dell’Oman
è – al contrario – una terra cordiale
e ospitale, ricca di paesaggi
suggestivi, di storia e di miti.
Posto all’angolo orientale della
penisola arabica, circondato
dagli Emirati Arabi Uniti, l’Arabia
Saudita e lo Yemen, l’Oman è
una terra dai paesaggi irregolari:
coste irregolari, bassipiani salati,
spiagge, deserti e oasi, il
tutto in una clima politico e sociale
tranquillo che è valso a
questo Sultanato l’appellativo di
“Svizzera del Medio Oriente”.
La capitale, Muscat, ha poco dell’atmosfera
che caratterizza la
maggior parte delle capitali del
Medio Oriente: pochi negozi,
scarse attrazioni turistiche, piacevoli
passeggiate da fare lungo
il porto, dove si trova anche la
residenza del sultano, Qabus ibn
Sa’id.
Succeduto al padre nel 1970,
Qabus ibn Sa’id cominciò un
processo di modernizzazione
dell’economia e di riforme, all’insegna
della democratizzazione
in campo politico e delle riforme
strutturali in campo eco-
So well-known as a self-effacing
country that it has
earned the nickname of
«hermit of the Middle East»,
the Sultanate of Oman is -
quite the contrary - a cordial
and hospitable land, rich in
evocative landscapes, history
and myth.
Located on the easternmost tip
of the Arab peninsular and surrounded
by the United Arab
Emirates, Saudi Arabia and
Yemen, Oman is a land of varied
landscapes: rugged coastlines,
salt plains, beaches,
deserts and oases, all in a such
a calm political and social climate
that the Sultanate has
come to be known as the
«Switzerland of the Middle
East».
The capital, Muscat, has little
of the atmosphere that is a feature
of most Middle Eastern
capitals: not many shops and
very few tourist attractions,
apart from pleasant sea walks
along the port waterfront,
which is also where Sultan
Qabus ibn Sa’id has his residence.
When he succeeded to the Sultanate
after his father’s death
in 1970, Qabus ibn Sa’id began
nomico, aprendosi sempre più
verso l’esterno – cercando di
mantenere buoni rapporti diplomatici
con tutti gli stati della regione
– e cercando investimenti
alternativi all’industria del petrolio.
Un paese ricco e affascinante,
da sempre avvolto da un’aura di
leggenda e fantasia, forse perché
così difficile da raggiungere
e penetrare: le ultime notizie –
fino a cinquant’anni fa – si rifacevano
soltanto ad alcuni avventurieri
inglesi degli anni
Venti e quelle precedenti, affondavano
le proprie radici nella
fervida fantasia di Marco Polo
che definiva l’Oman come una
terra dove “ai buoi e ai cammelli
danno da mangiare pesci, perché
nella loro contrada non c’è
erba”.
A sottolineare questo carattere
misterioso, sono fiorite intorno
all’Oman moltissime storie: è
questa la terra del leggendario
unicorno, il paese del prezioso
incenso e del mitico Sinbad, marinaio
de Le Mille e una Notte, un
Ulisse arabo, protagonista di
meravigliose e fantastiche avventure.
Leggende certo, ma con un
fondo di verità: l’unicorno in rea
process of economic modernisation
and reforms. His aims
were to encourage political
democracy and structural economic
reforms, to adopt an increasingly
open stance to the
outside world - at the same
time as trying to maintain good
diplomatic relations with all
the states in the region - and to
search for alternative investments
to industry and oil.
A rich and appealing country,
permeated since time immemorial
by an aura of legend and
fantasy, perhaps because it is
so difficult to reach and enter:
the latest news - until fifty
years ago - came from a few
English explorers in the 1920s,
while prior to that information
drew on the fervid imagination
of Marco Polo, who defined
Oman as a land where «they
give oxen and camels fish to
eat because no grass grows in
their fields»:
Many stories have grown up
about Oman, enhancing this
mysterious aura: it is the home
of the legendary unicorn, of incense
and the mythical Sinbad,
corna, perfettamente parallele
che, viste di lato, appaiono con
un unico grande corno centrale.
Anche Sinbad è una leggenda,
ma non è invece una fantasia il
fatto che gli omaniti siano provetti
marinai, gli unici del Medio
Oriente che preferirono commerciare
via acqua, piuttosto
che via deserto. Da millennni costruiscono
i dhow, battelli di
legno tenuti insieme soltanto
da funi e incastri, senza usare
nemmeno un chiodo. Oggi di
certo i commerci che passano
dall’Oman sono molto diversi:
petroliere e grandi navi mercantili
provenienti dal Golfo attraversano
le acque antistanti le
coste omanite per raggiungere il
resto del mondo, ma quando il
commercio era di oro, argento,
rame e incenso erano proprio i
resistentissimi dhow a solcare
quelle acque, alla volta della
Cina o delle Indie.
Lasciando la costa e risalendo
verso Nord, verso la Dhofar, si
potrà cominciare a scorgere i
luban, gli alberi dell’incenso che
crescono ancora nella zona, vicini
agli arbusti di mirra: mani
esperte e pazienti ne incidono le
nist of some fantastic adventures.
And while legends, they nevertheless
contain a grain of truth:
the unicorn doesn’t exist, but
there are white antelopes with
long, perfectly parallel horns
that look like a single central
horn when seen from the side.
Sinbad is a legend too, but not
the fact that the people of
Oman are born seafarers, the
only population in the Middle
East to prefer trading by sea
rather than across the desert.
For thousands of years they
have been building dhows or
wooden vessels held together
only by rope and joints, without
a single nail. And while the
trade that passes through
Oman is very different - oil
tankers and big merchant ships
arriving from the Gulf through
the waters off the Oman coast
to travel to the rest of the
world - when the materials
traded were gold, silver, copper
and incense, they were carried
to China and the Indies by
rugged dhows.
Leaving the coast and travelling
north towards Dhofar, you
begin to see the luban incense
trees that still grow in the area,
cortecce, facendone uscire le
preziose resine, profumate,
sacre: oggi la produzione di incenso
si è ridotta, ma un tempo
– tremila anni fa – fu proprio il
commercio del luban a far fiorire
la civiltà dei Sabei, le cui vestigia
ancora si possono ritrovare
intorno a Salalah, la seconda
città per importanza dopo la capitale
E se ci si spinge ancora un po’ più
all’interno, continuando da Salalah
verso Marbat, lungo la strada,
tra la sabbia e in mezzo a
strani spaventapasseri azzurri, si
vedranno grandi distese di
pesce, messo a seccare sulla sabbia.
A cosa serve tutto quel
pesce? “A nutrire cammelli e
capre”, vi diranno gli allevatori
della zona. Anche la fantasia di
Marco Polo, in fondo, non si era
allontanata di molto dalla realtà.
near the myrrh bushes: expert,
patient hands cut the bark so
that the precious, scented, holy
resin can seep out. Today not as
much incense is produced as
once was, but three thousand
years ago it was trade in luban
that enabled the Sabei civilisation
to flourish, the vestiges of
which can still be found around
Salalah, the second most important
city after the capital.
And if you travel a little further
into the country, along the road
from Salalah to Marbat, huge
expanses of fish can be seen
laid out to dry on sand dotted
with strange sky blue scarecrows.
What is all this fish for?
«To feed camels and goats»,
the herders of the area will tell
you. So you can see that perhaps
Marco Polo’s imagination
wasn’t so far off the truth.

GESTIONE AVANZATA
DEGLI IMPIANTI DELL’OLIO
NELLE TURBINE
ANSALDO ENERGIA
ENHANCED TURBINE OIL
SYSTEM MANAGEMENT
Modified (left) vs. Standard (right) servo valve
Ansaldo
Energia, grazie al proprio know how ed esperienza
• Migliorare i sistemi lubrificanti
partner internazionali come FRIESS Company, in
Turbines in the power industry and elsewhere
are increasingly affected by all
sorts of operational and maintenance
problems that are directly linked to lube oil issues.
Nowadays, a general interest in the oil system
management of industrial power plants is growing
while the answers on current oil issues
provided by the ISP, major oil producers and
turbine services companies, seem not be as effective
as hoped for.
The necessity to create international standardized
guidelines for monitoring, prevention
and reduction of lube oil degradation is generally
recognized in the industrial maintenance
world. Ansaldo Energia, through its know how
and experience accrued on the field and further
enhanced by the recent acquisition of Ansaldo
Thomassen, has started a comprehensive
R&D oil system program focused on how to
control and correct the lube oil issue and
whose base lines refer to:
• Recognizing turbine oil problems
• Removal of sludge & varnish
• Lube oil system improvements
This project resulted in R&D agreements with
international Partner like FRIESS Company in
Germany, MOOG UK, Analyst Inc. USA, with
whose contribution was possible the development
of proprietary diagnostic tools and devices
(like ECC, and CRV plate) capable of gaining
a leading role and be a key player in the field of
turbine lube oil issues.
The growing demand for high availability and
reliability figures on power plant machinery
atti a mantenerli nelle migliori condizioni possibili,
migliori.
I vantaggi e benefici più facilmente ottenibili
per i clienti sono:
• Minori arresti dei macchinari (pulizia dei serbatoi,
pompe,…) e risparmi sui costi di manutenzione
• Prolungamento del ciclo vitale dei macchinari
(pompe, servovalvole, cuscinetti, cartucce
e guarnizioni)
• Protezione del patrimonio aziendale
• Prolungamento del ciclo vitale del lubrificante,
perché mantenuto in condizioni più
pure
and the consequent pressure on profitability
in the energy market force the owner of the
plant to refocus on certain issues and commodities
like lube oil and hydraulic fluid and related
specific systems devoted to keep these in
the best possible condition to minimize forced
outages due to failures in the machinery oil systems.
This can be achieved by selecting of the
proper oil management, which will yield an
immediate return on investments related to
maintenance costs savings and improved availability
figures
Customer advantages and benefits that can be
achieved easily are:
• Reduced equipment downtime (cleaning of
reservoir, pumps,…) and maintenance costs
savings
• Extended equipment life time (pumps, servovalves,
bearings, cartridges and gaskets)
• Protected capital
• Extended oil life time by keeping oil in a
purer condition
• Reduced costs of oil replacement and
exhausted oil disposal
• Reduced sludge and varnish formation and
consequent hydraulic control system problems
(sticking of servovalves) causing expensive,
unplanned machine stoppages
The R&D project represents an effective measure
to support AEN coping with LTSA Contracts
that include AEN responsibility for unavailability
due to lube and hydraulic oil system
problems.
Worldwide there are many companies and
outfits that provide services claiming to restoidraulici
(aderenze delle servovalvole) che causano
fermi macchina imprevisti e dispendiosi.
idraulici a olio.
oli in condizioni affidabili. Organizzazioni internazionali
e gruppi di lavoro per le normative,
stanno definendo ulteriormente i limiti e criteri
di servizio.
Con la recente applicazione positiva del CRV-
Plate di proprietà (Cross Relief port Valve) su
numerose turbine a gas heavy duty di GE, è
stato dimostrato che è possibile prevenire la
formazione di residui e vernice nei componenti
critici (servovalvole) dei sistemi idraulici di queste
turbine a gas.
AEN ECC dichiara
di risolvere il problema della ridotta efficacia
dei sistemi di pulizia elettrostatica dell’olio
convenzionali, usati su turbine a petrolio di
tipo moderno.
Quanto sopra illustrato, il know-how e l’esperienza
AEN/ATH nella diagnostica e rilevamento
guasti dei lubrificati serviranno al mercato per
migliorare la funzionalità delle turbine, guadagnando
notevoli consensi dal ruolo di principale
operatore in relazione a queste tematiche,
su scala nazionale e internazionale.
developing specifications and setting limits to
keep the oil in reliable condition. International
organizations and standards working groups
are active in further defining service limits and
With recent successful applications of the proprietary
L
of Twente è molto attiva nella ricerca e trasposizione
pratica di teorie innovative. In parte, ciò è dovuto
alla collaborazione a livello internazionale con
altre università e società. Mike Koopmans partecipa
th , Enschede, the
Netherlands. Two minivans packed with 9
students Mechanical Engineering each, are
starting what is going to be one of this years greatest
event for the people involved. A sixteen days
lasting trip through four countries, about 4000 kilometers
to drive and a total of thirteen companies
to visit are planned. In a short four months this trip
has been organized and themed “Innovation, Creating
our Future”. In conjunction with the theme,
Ansaldo Energia is therefore a great addition to the
trip.
As an entrepreneurial University, the University of
Twente is very active in researching and putting innovative
theories to the test. Part of this way of
thinking is the international cooperation with other
universities and companies. Mike Koopmans, a fellow
student of ours is actively participating in this
strategy by doing an internship at Ansaldo Energia,
and with his help a visit could be arranged and on
the 26 th of February 18 students arrived at the
gates of Ansaldo Energia.
With a presentation of the Ansaldo Group, followed
by the way Ansaldo is thinking about and putting
innovation to work, the day started. After the lunch
at the cafeteria we got the chance to see for real
what the production of Ansaldo Energia is all
about. Guided by Mr. Nardone they saw the super
precise techniques to create the vanes and blades
from large blocks of steel. Also the assembly of the
various components to create the actual rotor was
another great experience for us.
At the end of the day in Genova we all concluded
that Ansaldo Energia has a lot more to offer and
about innovation.
N
el mese di gennaio 2009, Petra van Wingerden,
il Sindaco del Comune di Rheden (Gemeente
Rheden) e Hans Elsenaar, consigliere comunale
dello scorso anno.
Ansaldo Nucleare will be responsible
for adapting the
technology for use in the nuclear
sector, where it will be
applied in the first processing
plant at the Trino power station.
The technology can them
be used at other Sogin plants
with similar issues.
Sogin will develop the system
to extract the resins from their
current containers, as well as
the post-treatment system for
process residue. It will also
handle approval procedures
and ensure that the by-products
of processing respect requirements
for disposal in the
Italian national radioactive
material storage facility.
It is estimated that a little
more than two years will be
required to develop the technology
and build the plant, at
a total cost of about Euro 13
million.
As this technology can also be
used to treat the ion exchange
resins produced in foreign nuclear
plants, the agreement
makes provision for its promotion
on the global decommissioning
market.
THE WET OXIDATION PROCESS
The waste to process consists
of roughly 100 cubic metres of
granular ion exchange resins,
about 85% of which was used
during power station operation,
while the remaining
amount was used for steam
generator decontamination, to
reduce the exposure of personnel
involved in decommissioning
operations to sources of radioactivity.
The new treatment process
was proposed as a way to resolve
several critical issues
prodotte in impianti nucleari esteri, l’accordo
prevede di promuoverla sul mercato globale del
decommissioning.
1. Pre-trattamento: consiste nel recupero delle resine
esaurite estraendole dai recipienti utilizzati
per lo stoccaggio temporaneo in centrale e
nella preparazione della sospensione in acqua
di resina finemente macinata;
2. Ossidazione ad umido: consiste nel processo di
ossidazione ad umido per trasformare la materia
organica in acqua e anidride carbonica e la
materia inorganica in ossidi insolubili;
3. Post-trattamento: consiste nel trattamento finale
per condizionare i residui solidi inorganici
contenenti la contaminazione radioattiva e nel
trattamento della soluzione contenente i sali
solubili.
MOCK-UP
caused by the type of waste involved, which has
a negative influence on the physical characteristics
of the product to send to the storage facility.
The work involves the design and construction
of the integrated processing system, which consists
of three main blocks:
1. Pre-processing: recovery of exhausted resins
by extracting them from the containers used
for temporary power station storage, and
preparation of a suspension of finely ground
resin in water;
2. Wet oxidation: this is the process which
transforms organic material into water and
carbon dioxide, and inorganic material into
insoluble oxides;
3. Post-processing: final treatment to condition
the inorganic solid residue containing the radioactive
contamination, and processing the
solution containing the soluble salts.
MOCK-UP
The development of the global treatment
process also embraces plans to build a reduced
scale plant that will be used to perform operating
tests on the wet oxidation process only.
Tests on the mock-up will make it possible to
fine tune the process parameters to use in the
full scale plant, and to verify the characteristics
of the residues produced, all necessary to validate
our current knowledge regarding performance,
and to extend it to cover the new type of
material to process.
The reduced scale plant will operate for about
two months using simulated waste (ie. resins
without radioactive contamination) that reproduces
the Trino power station resins as closely
as possible.
Once the process has been optimised, the reduced
scale plant will be used to define the performance
of the full-scale plant, as well as the
chemical and physical characteristics of the
residue obtained from the wet oxidation
process, so far as this is possible.
The residues produced in the test performed
with optimised process parameters, will be
used subsequently to define and fine tune postprocessing
and conditioning activities for the
final waste.
ANSALDO ENERGIA 34
solforosa, ossidi di azoto (NO x
) od ossido di carbonio,
mentre la materia organica è trasformata
in acqua e anidride carbonica e la parte inorgani-
PRE-PROCESSING
The first processing stage is extracting the resins
from the purifiers and transferring them hydraulically
to an intermediate accumulation
tank.
As the incoming material must not contain suspended
solid particles with a diameter greater
than 0.5 mm for the wet oxidation process to
work properly, the resins need to be ground.
The ground resins will be collected in two tanks
to ensure they have the same consistency before
radiological characterisation prior to treatment.
WET OXIDATION
The oxidation process is based on a chemical reaction
that takes place in the liquid state, consisting
of the oxidation of organic and inorganic
substances through the use of oxygen (or air) at
a high temperature (200-300°C) and a pressure
of between 35 and 200 bar.
The reaction, which does not require catalysts,
produces no toxic gases, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen
oxides (NOx) or carbon oxide, transforms organic
material into water and carbon monoxide, and
the inorganic component into mineral oxides.
The oxidation reaction is exothermic and, if the
quantity of organic material is sufficient, there is
no need for an external heat source (generally
speaking too much heat is generated, with the
excess used for heat recovery inside the process).
The plant, for obvious reasons of thermal stability,
operates 24/7 and is completely automatic,
requiring only supervision by an operator from a
remote monitoring station.
POST-PROCESSING
The residue obtained from the wet oxidation
process will consist of:
• a water component containing soluble salts,
including caesium salt; this radionuclide forms
part of the initial contamination of the resins;
• an insoluble solid resin, consisting of metal oxides
deriving from nuclear plant material corrosion
products (mainly Fe, Cr, Ni); plus cobalt,
which contributes to the radioactivity of the
final residue.
The appropriate treatments will be adopted to
condition the residue in such a way as to obtain
products which are suitable for storage in the
Italian national storage facility.
ca è convertita a ossidi minerali.
La reazione di ossidazione è esotermica
e, se la quantità di materia
organica è sufficiente, non
necessita di apporto termico
dall’esterno (generalmente si ha
un eccesso di generazione di calore
che viene impiegato per ricupero
termico all’interno dello
stesso processo).
L’impianto, per ovvie ragioni di
stabilità termica, funziona in
modo continuativo (24 ore al
giorno e per 7 giorni alla settimana)
e completamente automatico
e necessita solo di una
supervisione da parte dell’operatore
tramite una postazione di
controllo remotizzata.
POST-TRATTAMENTO
Il residuo ottenuto dal processo
di ossidazione ad umido sarà
composto da:
• una fase acquosa contenente
sali solubili, tra cui sali di
cesio; questo radionuclide costituisce
parte della contaminazione
iniziale delle resine,
• un residuo solido insolubile
costituito da ossidi di metalli
derivanti dai prodotti di corrosione
dei materiali dell’Impianto
nucleare (prevalentemente
Fe, Cr, Ni); e oltre a
questi il cobalto che contribuisce
alla radioattività del residuo
finale.
Opportuni trattamenti saranno
adottati per condizionare il residuo
in modo da ottenere manufatti
idonei allo stoccaggio nel
deposito finale.

SERVICE AI LIMITI:
JIGUEY, TORMENTATA
STORIA DI UN SUCCESSO
EXTREME SERVICE WORK
AT JIGUEY - A HARD-
FOUGHT SUCCESS STORY
Negli anni ‘80 il gruppo d’imprese italiane
GIE costruì su un importante
corso d’acqua nell’interno montagnoso
e semidisabitato della Repubblica Dominicana,
in America centrale, due impianti
idroelettrici con macchinari Ansaldo all’avanguardia
della tecnologia del tempo, le
centrali di Jiguey (2 x 50 MW) e di Aguacate
(2 x 35 MW).
sugli impianti realizzati in America Lati-
In the 1980s, on a major waterway in the
mountainous and sparsely populated interior
of the Dominican Republic in Central
America, Italian company grouping GIE
built two hydroelectric power stations at
Jiguey (2 x 50 MW) and Aguacate (2 x 35
MW), both equipped with Ansaldo machinery
based on leading edge technology at the
time.
It was no mean task. Roads and bridges had
to be built specially to transport the huge
quantities of materials needed, including
several very large single-piece components,
to some extremely remote and inaccessible
locations in the heart of mountainous regions
covered by tropical vegetation and
completely lacking any form of infrastructure.
In 2005, in the framework of business expansion
plans and renewed interest in serv-
brillantemente portato a termine
Estatales).
Questo primo doppio intervento aveva permesso
comunque di verificare che dopo
tanto tempo le infrastrutture realizzate per
giungere alla centrale si erano molto degradate,
per l’effetto combinato della scarsa
manutenzione, della complessa orografia
dei luoghi e dell’estrema aggressività del
clima caraibico con i suoi frequenti e violenti
uragani.

convocava d’urgenza Ansaldo Energia in
quanto il macchinario era coperto dalla normale
garanzia sull’intervento.
oltre tre anni dopo.
stimata preliminarmente in oltre tre
necessario revisionare, riparare o sostituire.
ice activities for plants built in Latin America,
Ansaldo Energia returned to the Jiguey
power station more than twenty years after
its construction to remedy serious electrical
problems affecting the generators in both
sets. This job for specialists was brilliantly
concluded by the end of the two-month
contract term, to the great satisfaction of
customer CDEEE (Comision Dominicana de
las Empresas Electricas Estatales).
This first project clearly revealed serious deterioration
after so many years of the access
infrastructure built for the power station, as
a result of the combined effect of insufficient
maintenance, the mountainous nature
of the area and the extremely aggressive
Caribbean climate with its frequent
hurricanes.
In November 2005, just a few weeks after
our engineers returned to Italy, unit no. 2 at
Jiguey suffered a serious failure during an
accidental loss of load, and the customer urgently
called in Ansaldo Energia as the machinery
was still covered by the standard
warranty.
While rotating at high speed, the generator
rotor had destroyed the squirrel cage,
pieces of which had also caused serious internal
damage to the stator pack. And so
began the difficult job of returning unit 2
to service, a task which was only completed
in January 2009, more than three years
later.
The first difficult task was demonstrating
beyond all reasonable doubt that the failure
was not caused by mistakes made by Ansaldo
Energia, and that therefore the repair
work, initially estimated at more than three
million euros in direct costs, would be paid
by the customer.
Finally, the customer accepted that the accident
could not be attributed to errors committed
by Ansaldo Energia and so, in May
2007, the first order was raised to restore
the unit to service on a turnkey basis.
It was divided into various stages, beginning
in June 2007 with orders for strategic
materials, the on-site dismantling of rotor
components to send to Italy for repair, and
a careful inspection of the entire plant, including
an assessment of which components
needed overhauling, repairing or replacing.
But the best part was still to come. Half way
through the first phase of work in August
2007, the Caribbean island was hit by a series
of consecutive hurricanes, including the
terrible Noel, which in a deluge of wind and
water blocked the «track» with huge landslides,
flooding, collapsed bridges and trees
fallen across roads.
Our engineers tried everything to reach the
power station, but without success, and it
remained isolated for weeks. We were
forced to halt work indefinitely for reasons
of force majeure, while the customer had to
use helicopters and foot porters to keep the
power station running.
The second stage of work recommenced in
June 2008 with the arrival of repaired and
new materials from Italy, which presented
us with a challenging logistics problem: the
damaged bridges and roads, either temporarily
repaired or replaced by fords,
meant that it was impossible for the trucks
and their heavy containers to reach the
power station, and so we had to organise a
series of journeys with a special tractor on
hand to pull the trucks through the most
difficult sections of road on the way to the
site.
The 2008 hurricane season, while less violent
than the preceding year, contributed to
even more deterioration of the already seriously
damaged roads. Lashed by wind and
rain, our engineers had on more than one
occasion to ford swollen rivers with the help
of tow cables, or remove fallen trees from
their path. All this caused more halts to
work for reasons of force majeure.
The plant was scheduled to re-enter service
in mid-December 2008, and despite everything
we were managing to stay on track,
but there seemed to be no end to our bad
luck: the turbine waste water gates in unit 2
were under 3 metres of water, as well as
being blocked and damaged by tonnes and
tonnes of rock. The CDEEE was unable to
give us the go ahead to start up the plant
and we were forced once again to halt work

allagamenti, ponti crollati e alberi divelti
sulle strade.
I nostri tecnici hanno inutilmente provato
con tutti i mezzi a raggiungere la centrale, rimasta
poi isolata per settimane. Siamo stati
2008 all’arrivo dei materiali riparati e nuovi
ponti e strade interrotti, riparati provvisoriamente
difficili, fino in impianto.
alberi divelti; abbiamo avuto ancora
giorni di sospensione lavori per forza maggiore.
Dovevamo terminare il lavoro con la messa
in servizio a metà dicembre 2008, e nonostante
quindi interrompere ancora i lavori, negoziando
negotiate an additional addendum to
the contract to cover the extra costs and delays.
In the final act of this drama, on January 5,
2009, a task force of Ansaldo Energia engineers
returned to Santo Domingo with control
and regulation system electronics support
provided by engineers from ABB Italia
and Westinghouse. On the 23rd of the same
month, during a celebratory meeting with
the customer, unit no. 2 was restored to
service at full load, delivering more that 4
MW more power than when it broke down.
With great satisfaction the customer signed
the provisional acceptance certificate, bringing
to a close the troubled story of a service
commission at the very limit of the possible,
and completing a contract worth in the end
almost five million euros (by no means negligible
for a hydroelectric plant of this size),
as well as demonstrating the remarkable
skills, determination and flexibility shown
by Ansaldo Energia’s engineers... not to
mention their courage while working in ludicrous
conditions.

ENERGIA
La società Autostrade sostiene
che con il tracciato 4 Ansaldo
avrebbe “un impatto provvisorio
sulle aree produttive ed uno permanente
sulle aree logistiche”
(pag. 56 di “La Gronda di Genova,
Per Ansaldo Energia in realtà la
scelta del tracciato 4 avrebbe un
impatto forte e permanente
sulle aree logistiche e di produzione,
in quanto renderebbe necessario
lo spostamento totale o
per lo meno parziale (opzione
non gradita e rischiosa per l’efficacia
e la continuità produttiva)
dell’azienda, che comporterebbe:
• La necessità di ricollocare gli
(area B);
• La necessità di raddoppiare,
almeno durante un certo pe-
CONSEQUENCES FOR
ANSALDO ENERGIA
Motorway operator Autostrade
claims that for Ansaldo route 4
would have "a temporary impact
on production areas and a
permanent one on logistics
areas" (page 56, “La Gronda di
Genova. Presentazione sintetica
delle ipotesi di tracciato” ["The
"Gronda" motorway bridge in
Genoa. A brief presentation of
alternative routes"]).
But in fact, for Ansaldo Energia
the choice of route 4 would
have a strong and permanent
impact on logistics and production
areas, as the company
would have to relocate either
entirely or in part (an unwelcome
and risky option in terms of
effectiveness and production
continuity), involving:
• the relocation of offices for at
• Inoltre, in caso di smembramento
della Fabbrica e ricollocazione
di almeno una sua
parte (area A, figura 2):
• la divisione dei siti produttivi
comporterebbe la necessità di
spostare all’esterno numerosi
trasporti di materiali e di semilavorati,
che oggi avvengono
all’interno dell’area di stabilimento,
con conseguente
aggravio dei costi di produzione
e disturbo della viabilità cittadina.
• la cantierizzazione della gronda
comporterebbe un forte disturbo/impedimento
della
viabilità sia all’interno del perimetro
aziendale che all’esterno,
con conseguente
calo di efficienza del processo
produttivo.
Se si scegliesse il tracciato 4,
dunque, sarebbe necessario
compiere da subito i seguenti
passi propedeutici :
• da parte delle istituzioni locali
insieme ad Ansaldo Energia,
individuare un’area adatta al
trasferimento dell’azienda;
• da parte di Ansaldo Energia
pianificare in dettaglio il trasferimento,
in modo da arrecare
il più basso disturbo possibile
alla continuità di gestione
e di produzione, in un momento
di crescita dell’azienda sui
mercati internazionali
• eseguire il trasferimento
prima dell’inizio dei lavori di
costruzione del viadotto
• In the event that the "Fabbrica"
workshop is broken up
and at least in part relocated
(area A, figure 2):
• the division of the production
sites would require numerous
materials and semi-finished
product transfers to be
moved outside rather than inside
• the work site for the project
would represent a serious disturbance
for the road system
both inside and outside the
site, reducing the efficiency of
the production process.
If route 4 is chosen, the following
preparatory steps would
have to be performed immediately:
• the local authorities and Ansaldo
Energia would together
have to identify a suitable
area in which to relocate the
company;
• Ansaldo Energia would have
to plan the transfer in detail
in such a way as to cause the
least possible disturbance to
management and production
continuity, at a time of
growth for the company on
international markets;
• It would also be necessary to
perform the transfer before
construction work starts on
the motorway bridge.
Estimated time required for
transfer: no less than 4 years
after obtaining permits needed
tire dall’ottenimento delle autorizzazioni
necessarie all’inizio
dei lavori nella nuova area;
Costo stimato: circa 400 milioni
di € per il trasferimento totale
dell’Azienda, opzione preferita
da Ansaldo Energia.
to start work on the new area;
Estimated cost: about Euro 400
mast and a slip road inside the boundaries of the
Ansaldo Energia site
ANSALDO ENERGIA 42
TRACCIATO 5 DELLA GRONDA:
CONSEGUENZE PER ANSALDO
ENERGIA
L’area Ansaldo Energia verrebbe
interessata direttamente dalla
costruzione dello svincolo di accesso
al ponte, con conseguente
demolizione dell’edificio mense
(area C) che serve 1500 persone.
L’elicoidale renderebbe impraticabile
lo svolgimento della normale
attività lavorativa negli uffici
esistenti (area B), a causa dell’inquinamento
acustico ed atmosferico,
non comparabile a
quello che già attualmente produce
la viabilità sul Ponte Morandi,
con conseguente necessità di
ricollocare circa 1300 persone.
Se si scegliesse il tracciato 5, dunque:
• sarebbe necessario per Ansaldo
Energia ricollocare gli uffici
di almeno 1300 persone (area
B) e la palazzina mensa all’interno
o all’esterno dello stabilimento,
con costi minori rispetto
a quelli esposti in relazione
alle conseguenze del tracciato
4, ma comunque nell’ordine di
almeno 50 milioni di €.
• Ansaldo Energia soffrirebbe in
maniera pesante delle perturbazioni
alla viabilità pubblica
adiacente i siti produttivi dovute
alla cantierizzazione della
gronda nel corso di un periodo
molto lungo, stimato da autostrade
in almeno 7 anni. In merito
va ricordato che le movimentazioni
esterne di Ansaldo
Energia, essenziali per la fluidità
di produzione e la consegna dei
nostri prodotti sul mercato mondiale,
sono stimate in oltre 700
trasporti al mese, sia in entrata
che in uscita, di cui almeno 40
fuori sagoma stradale (come, ad
esempio, i trasporti eccezionali).
ROUTE 5:
CONSEQUENCES
FOR ANSALDO ENERGIA
The Ansaldo Energia area would
be directly affected by the construction
of the entry slip road
to the bridge, resulting in the
demolition of the canteen building
(area C) used by 1,500 people.
The spiral slip road would make
normal work impractical in the
existing office buildings (area
B), due to the noise and atmospheric
pollution created, which
would not be comparable with
that produced at the present
time by traffic crossing Morandi
Bridge, requiring the relocation
of about 1,300 people.
Therefore, if route 5 is chosen:
• Ansaldo Energia would have
to relocate the offices of at
least 1,300 people (area B)
and the canteen building inside
or outside the site, at a
lower cost than in the case
of route 4, but nevertheless
in the order of at least Euro
50 million.
• Ansaldo Energia would be
seriously affected by the disruption
of the public road
system in the vicinity of the
production facilities, resulting
from work sites which
would have to remain in
place for at least 7 years according
to the plans of Autostrade.
It should be remembered
that in order to keep
production flowing and deliver
products to world markets,
Ansaldo Energia organises
about 700 inbound
and outbound road shipments
a month, of which at
least 40 are exceptional
loads.
CONCLUSIONI
Ansaldo Energia attende sulla
questione una decisione rapida da
parte delle istituzioni preposte.
Ansaldo Energia non intende opporsi
ad alcun tracciato, ma chiede
alle istituzioni che, nel caso in
cui la scelta dovesse cadere sul
tracciato 4 o sul tracciato 5,
venga istituito immediatamente
un tavolo per:
• la pianificazione puntuale
delle attività da porre in essere
prima dell’inizio dei lavori di
costruzione della gronda, in
modo da assicurare continuità
all’attività produttiva e la salvaguardia
occupazionale dell’azienda;
• la corretta valutazione ed allocazione
dei costi correlati a tali
azioni.
CONCLUSIONS
Ansaldo Energia expects a rapid
decision to be taken by the competent
authorities.
Ansaldo Energia does not intend
to oppose any of the proposed
routes, but asks the institutions,
in the event route 4 or 5 is selected,
to immediately establish a
round table to:
• plan carefully the activities
to perform before the start
of construction work on the
motorway bridge, to ensure
production continuity and
protect jobs at the company;
• assess and allocate correctly
the costs relating to these
actions.

FABRIZIO DE ANDRÈ:
LA MOSTRA
FABRIZIO DE ANDRÈ.
THE EXHIBITION
> “Non chiedere a uno scrittore
di canzoni che cosa ha
pensato, che cosa ha sentito
prima dell’opera: è proprio
per non volervelo dire che si
è messo a scrivere. La risposta
è nell’opera”.
F. De Andrè
> “Don’t ask songwriters
what they think about or
feel when they write: the
reason they write is because
they don’t want to tell you.
The answer is in the song”.
classico percorso museale, dove transitare,
lanciando occhiate più o meno passive a oggetti,
fotografie, cimeli.
a poco a poco, trasparendo proprio dalle
sue parole, dalle sue sonorità, dai suoi sguardi.
Ma soprattutto è un incontro, un momento
in cui il visitatore è protagonista, interprete:
ogni persona che attraversa la mostra, a
seconda delle sue azioni e delle sue scelte,
scopre e vive, personalmente, un Faber diverso,
accogliendone aspetti differenti, intimi,
This must have been the guiding principle
followed by the curators of the exhibition
in Genoa about Fabrizio De
Andrè, ten years after his death, to tell the
story of his life, music and interests.
“Fabrizio De Andrè, the exhibition” isn’t a
classic museum itinerary you walk round
glancing more or less passively at the objects,
photographs and relics presented. In
the exhibition, the poetry, ideas and feelings
of Fabrizio De Andrè are revealed a little at a
time through his words, harmonies and perceptions.
But most importantly it is a meeting
point, a moment in time when visitors
to the exhibition act out the main roles,
making their own decisions and choices in a
personal process of discovering a different
Faber (an affectionate short-form of Fabforti,
vicini.
suoi ritmi, nelle sue parole.
tournee, diventano personaggi in carne
e ossa: trentun personaggi delle sue canzoni
scorrono – reinterpretati – in tre grandi schermi,
Calvino.
ANSALDO ENERGIA 44
rizio), perceived through an individual set of
strongly felt perspectives.
The interactive and multimedia features of
the exhibition provide the best way to remember
and learn about the great singersongwriter
from Genoa: an eclectic artist
whose poetry and approach to life can’t be
encapsulated in simple captions. Fabrizio De
André’s songs offer a broader, multi-faceted
perspective, with a strength and power that
is revealed in his attitudes, rhythms and
words.
The exhibition covers five rooms, organised
in such a way as to fill the narrative and exhibits
with suggestions and emotions. The
first room, the Screen Room, presents some
of the themes touched on most by De
Andrè: Genoa, women, anarchy, the lowest
of the low, war and death.
Each theme is correlated with contemporary
events, as Faber’s lyrics provide the backdrop
for video sequences extrapolated from
everyday life: an active backdrop, almost a
suggestion of how to look at the new reality,
accompanied by a more profound analy-
via internet, assemblando foto, materiali,
grafiche.
– propongono attraverso filmati, oggetti
Vittorio Bo, Guido Harari, Vincenzo Mollica e
Pepi Morgia. Il progetto e la realizzazione
sono di Studio Azzurro, l’allestimento degli
spazi espositivi e la grafica sono di Sp10studio.
“Fabrizio De Andrè. La mostra” resterà aperta
al pubblico fino al 3 maggio 2009.
sis of the world around us. And while visitors
re-interpret everyday life through the
poetry of De Andrè, Faber’s writings scroll
across the walls, his handwriting fills the exhibition
space, and his notes and comments
take shape.
Equally suggestive is the Sala dei Tarocchi,
where the huge Tarot cards that provided
the stage set for his last tour become people
in flesh and blood: thirty one characters
from his songs are reinterpreted and presented
on three big screens, telling us their
silent stories, like in the Castle of Crossed
Destinies by Italo Calvino.
The game of life, simplified in the form of
Tarot card characters, is not limited to the
exhibition, but through it touches the everyday
lives of us all. Visitors themselves are invited
to create their own Tarot, their own
personality, then and there, but also at
home, on the Internet, by assembling photographs,
drawings and other materials. The
Tarot cards created by visitors, like De
Andrè’s, are presented on the walls of this
room, telling their life stories with his characters,
each in their own personal way.
The other rooms - Music, Life and Cinema -
use film clips, objects and video sequences
to present De Andrè’s relationships, records,
hits and interviews. In these rooms too visitors
build their own experiences, choosing
the objects that involve them in a story and
identifying the people who can tell the tale
of Faber and his art.
The exhibition is organised by Palazzo
Ducale Fondazione per la Culture, with the
non profit Fabrizio De Andrè Foundation.
The curators are Vittorio Bo, Guido Harari,
Vincenzo Mollica and Pepi Morgia. Design
and installation by Studio Azzurro, exhibition
space preparation and graphic design
by Sp10studio.
“Fabrizio De Andrè. The exhibition” open to
the public until May 3, 2009.
