SINOSSI<br />

Oualata è la città rossa all’estremo est del deserto della Mauritania. In questo isolotto,<br />

effimero baluardo contro le sabbie, tre donne praticano la pittura tra<strong>di</strong>zionale decorando le<br />

mura delle case della città. In una società dominata dalla tra<strong>di</strong>zione, dalla religione e dagli<br />

uomini (spesso assenti), queste donne si esprimono con una sorprendente libertà a<br />

proposito della maniera <strong>di</strong> percepire la relazione fra uomini e donne.<br />

Oualata, la ville rouge à l’extrême est du désert mauritanien. Dans cet îlot, éphémère<br />

rempart contre <strong>les</strong> sab<strong>les</strong>, trois femmes pratiquent la peinture tra<strong>di</strong>tionnelle en décorant<br />

<strong>les</strong> murs des maisons de la ville. Dans une société apparemment dominée par la tra<strong>di</strong>tion,<br />

la religion et <strong>les</strong> <strong>hommes</strong> (souvent absents), ces femmes s’expriment avec une<br />

surprenante liberté sur leur manière de percevoir la relation entre <strong>les</strong> <strong>hommes</strong> et <strong>les</strong><br />

femmes.<br />

Oualata is a red city at the extreme east of the Mauritanian desert. In this island and<br />

ephemeral stronghold against the sand, three women practise the tra<strong>di</strong>tional paining<br />

decorating the walls of the houses in the city. In a society dominated by tra<strong>di</strong>tion, religion<br />

and men (who are often absent), these women express how they perceive the relationship<br />

between men and women surprisingly freely.<br />

<strong>Katy</strong> <strong>Lane</strong> N<strong>di</strong>aye<br />

Nasce in Senegal nel 1968. Stu<strong>di</strong>a a Parigi e poi si trasferisce a Bruxel<strong>les</strong>. La sua<br />

formazione avviene inizialmente in campo giornalistico. Con il suo esor<strong>di</strong>o alla regia, nel<br />

2003, Traces, empreintes de femmes, ottiene numerosi riconoscimenti nei festival<br />

internazionali, tra cui Montréal e Cartagine.<br />

Elle est née au Sénégal en 1968. Elle fait ses études à Paris puis elle part vivre à<br />

Bruxel<strong>les</strong>. Elle travaille d’abord dans le domaine journalistique. Traces, empreintes de<br />

femmes, sa première mise en scène, obtient de nombreux prix dans des festivals<br />

internationaux dont Montréal et de Carthage.


She was born in Senegal in 1968. She stu<strong>di</strong>ed in Paris and then went to live in Brussels.<br />

Her initial training was as a journalist. Her debut as a filmmaker, in 2003, Traces,<br />

empreintes de femmes, won many prizes at international film festivals, inclu<strong>di</strong>ng Montreal<br />

and Carthage.<br />
