Aims<br />

This course aims at provi<strong>di</strong>ng the fundamentals for signals description and characterization, both deterministic and random, for understan<strong>di</strong>ng<br />

the main techniques used for information transmission, in a generic communication system, and its protection against noise and other<br />

superposed <strong>di</strong>sturbances.<br />

Topics<br />

- Deterministic signals and their representation in the time and frequency domains.<br />

- Random signals.<br />

- Characterization of a telecommunication system.<br />

- AWGN channel.<br />

- Analog modulations.<br />

- Quantization.<br />

- Information sources and source co<strong>di</strong>ng.<br />

- Representation of <strong>di</strong>gital signals over the AWGN channel and the band-limited channel.<br />

- Demodulation and quality in <strong>di</strong>gital transmissions over the AWGN channel and the band-limited channel.<br />

- Channel co<strong>di</strong>ng.<br />

Exam<br />

The exam consists of a written exercise followed by an oral proof. The admission to the oral proof is con<strong>di</strong>tioned on the overcome of the<br />

written exercise.<br />
