(Florida; de Laubenfels, 1936); U.S.Virgin Islands (St. Thomas; Duchassaing & Michelotti,1864).REMARKS: As currently accepted (Borojevic et al., 2002a),species of Leucandra have a cortical skeleton of tangentialspicules with diactines, if present, penetrating thechoanosome; a disorganised choanoskeleton, with tracesof radial organization at the subatrial level; an atrialskeleton of triactines and/or tetractines; and sylleibid orleuconoid aquiferous system. Harpoon-shaped pugiolesare never present. Therefore, as L. barbata shows thesecharacteristics, it is here transferred to Leucandra.K Leucandra crassior Ridley, 1881 (new status and newcombination)Aphroceras caminus sensu Ridley, 1881: 135 (non Leucandracaminus Haeckel, 1872).Aphroceras caminus var. crassior Ridley, 1881: 135; Mello-Leitão et al., 1961: 2.Leuconia caminus, Borojevic & Peixinho, 1976: 1026.TYPE SPECIMENS: Unknown.TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil: EspÍrito Santo State: VitóriaBank.BRAZILIAN RECORDS: Northeast Region: Pernambuco State:Off Olinda (08 o 00’S–34 o 32’03”W, 70-80 m depth;Borojevic & Peixinho, 1976 [description]). SoutheastRegion: Espírito Santo State: Vitória Bank (Ridley,1881 [original description]; Mello-Leitão et al., 1961[checklist]).WORLD DISTRIBUTION: Endemic from Brazil.REMARKS: (1) Ridley (1881) recorded Leucandra caminusHaeckel, 1872 and described Leucandra caminus var.crassior from Southeast Brazil (Vitória Bank, EspíritoSanto State), as he found differences in the spicules sizeof the specimens. In 1976, Borojevic & Peixinho acceptedthe synonymy of Leucandra caminus var. crassior withLeucandra caminus, as proposed by Burton (1963) andcited L. caminus from Pernambuco State. However, analysing the original description and the drawings madeby Haeckel of L. caminus, we believe that this species isdifferent from the Brazilian specimens studied by Ridley(1881) and Borojevic & Peixinho (1976). According toHaeckel (1872), L. caminus is composed of clathratetubes. Therefore, we propose here the elevation of thevariety Leucandra caminus var. crassior to the speciescategory and we consider that the Brazilian specimensdescribed as L. caminus belong to L. crassior.
