S ø rensen similarityindexes are low (C s< 0.5; Table 1 ). These low values arecounterintuitive. Within similar climatic zones and in theabsence of major dispersal barriers, marine biodiversityis expected to be much more homogenous (see Spaldinget al. 2007 ). Even though we cannot rule out the existenceof a biogeographical pattern making the Vietnameseseaweed flora highly distinct, we are of the opinion thatthe low similarity with neighbouring countries is primarilyan artifact resulting from taxonomic inconsistencies. The checklist presented here could serve as a valuabletool, listing the Vietnamese seaweed diversity and stimulatingintraregional comparative research. It may thenbecome clear that many local endemics have a muchwider distribution.Acknowledgements: Tu Van Nguyen is indebted to theBelgian Technological Cooperation for a grant as PhDresearcher.
