lori ann minor
the Swan lady
***
I saw nothing. All I could hear was demented laughter coming from all
directions with no idea of where I was. They exchanged my blindfold for a
mask and shoved me in a glass cage so hot that it roasted my skin. I started at
my reflection. The most elegant swan face rested upon my own. Strange
voices shouted at me to dance for them as tiny grains of salt rained down and
blistered my flesh. I didn't know what was happening... all I knew was I
needed to obey the orders of my masters. They led me in a parade of people
to watch me dance. To laugh and point as the music played on. My feathers
sprouted from the blisters in my skin. I tried to rip them out, but they
bloomed again and again. I've learned to love it here. I now call this
nightmare my home, and they call me the Swan Lady.
