“The limited knowledge of English in our country doe-<br />
sn’t help us promote yachting tourism.<br />
Visitors say: Italy is a beautiful country, rich in art,<br />
fashion and culture, but not dependable otherwise”.<br />
What can we do for our young individuals?<br />
My son Manuel has a degree in navigation and I know<br />
that almost no captain takes the responsibility of having<br />
a man under eighteen on board; but this is wrong, as it<br />
is right there and then that you fall in love with the sea”.<br />
Which are the qualities that a good captain must have?<br />
“I have thirty-eight years’ experience, including 2,647<br />
charter days, 26 Atlantic crossings.<br />
In 2003, I was given the Best Charter Captain award<br />
at a time when it went exclusively to foreign captains.<br />
A good captain has to keep both the yacht and the<br />
crew on track”.<br />
What do people say about Italian captains abroad?<br />
“We have managed to dispel most prejudice. But we<br />
still don’t have the credibility of the English who, as<br />
Agnelli said, are less corruptible”.<br />
What are the best yachting ports in the world? And<br />
which services should we Italians import?<br />
“We in Italy have ports that are famous worldwide.<br />
We have exported high-quality service. What we need<br />
to import is the streamlining of red tape”.
